    • Lionello Balestrieri (Cetona 1872-1958) - L'Oeuvre. From a novel by Zola
      Sep. 25, 2024

Lionello Balestrieri (Cetona 1872-1958) - L'Oeuvre. From a novel by Zola

      Est: €1,000 - €1,500

oil on canvas, unframed 65 x 81 cm signed lower right: L. Balestrieri on the back, on the frame, ancient handwritten label with the title of the work. The present painting is inspired by Émile Zola's novel The Opera, from 1886. In the novel the protagonist Claude Lantier, who had already appeared in one of Zola's most famous works, L'Assomoir, fights, in general incomprehension and to a tragic end, for an art different from the academic one. This is probably a reference to the Impressionists, still supported by Zola, who in fact did not appreciate the novel.

The present work is a study for the figure on the far right of the painting The Last Days of Domenico Morelli, currently preserved at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Udine. The work, large in size and with a horizontal cut like the more famous Beethoven, a masterpiece by Lionello Balestrieri, was created in 1902 and exhibited in the same year at the Glaspalast in Munich, before being presented to the public again in the Venice Biennale of 1903. It was on that occasion that it was purchased by the Marangoni Artistic Foundation for the Udine collections. The present study appears immortalized alongside Balestrieri, another smaller study and the finished painting in a 1902 photo of the painter in his studio in Paris.

Lionello Balestrieri - "Ultima cena" (Last Supper)

      Est: €3,000 - €3,500

Lionello Balestrieri was born in Cetona in 1872, the son of Agnese Bassi and Torello, a mason of modest means. The family moved first to Rome and then to Naples between 1886 and 1887. His artistic gifts secured him admission to the Academies of Fine Arts in both cities, where he studied under the wing of renowned verista painters Domenico Morelli, Filippo Palizzi and, privately, Gioacchino Toma. In 1892, Lionello moved to Paris, becoming an important figure for European artists. He worked as an assistant to illustrator Osvaldo Tofani and contributed engravings for an edition of the Divine Comedy published in 1900. To support his finances, he worked as an illustrator for several publications, including L'Illustration, Le Soleil du Dimanche, Petit Journal and Figaro Illustré. During this period, he met violinist Giuseppe Vannicola, portrayed in a painting exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1897. In 1896, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des artistes français with "En attendant la gloire." In 1900, he achieved notoriety with the work "Beethoven (Kreutzer Sonata)," which was awarded a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and at the Venice Biennale the following year. Recognized as "The Painter of Music," he came into contact with well-known composers such as Giacomo Puccini, Umberto Giordano and Francesco Cilea. He was also appointed president of the Society of Italian Artists in Paris. In 1910, he achieved success with the opera "I lavori alla metropolitana di Parigi," and in 1914, due to World War I, he moved to Naples, directing the Museum of Industrial Art and the Institute of Industrial Art. After the war, he became involved in the Futurist movement and participated in attempts to organize artists through unions and associations. In 1928, he founded the Gruppo degli Ostinati, close to Fascist ideals, and moved away from Futurist principles. At this stage, he devoted himself to reproducing landscapes, self-portraits and works celebrating the fascist regime. After World War II and the death of his wife Giuditta, he returned to Cetona in 1958, where he died. In Cetona, a foundation named after him is active, dedicated to promoting cultural events and retrospectives of his work and artistic circle. In 2015, a retrospective was held at Palazzo Minutelli Ciolo.
