He got an apprenticeship with a relative as a house and decoration painter, he was a gifted student. As a 19-year-old, he helped restore the decor in Balke church on Toten. He later moved to Vestre Balke farm, and took the name Balke. To escape conscription, he moved from Toten to Christiania and started at the Drawing School, he wanted to become a real artist. A bit like Askeladden, he was a poor boy who settled down in life, with good helpers behind him. After drawing school, he started at the academy in Stockholm, where he became friends with Prime Minister Due as well as King Karl Johan and Crown Prince Oscar. In Dresden he was received by J.C. Dahl, and in Paris King Ludvig Philip became interested in the young Norwegian painter. He frequented the court in Sweden and France and was part of the art elite in Germany, Sweden and Norway, where he was taught by the leading artists. In Norway he traveled around with Dahl and discovered the magnificent Norwegian nature. In 1832 he traveled from Trondheim to the North Cape, and back. Memories and images from this journey remained his favorite motif as long as he continued to paint.

Sotheby'sPROPERTY OF A NORWEGIAN PRIVATE COLLECTOR f - PEDER BALKE NORWEGIAN, 1804-1887 BÅTER I STORM (BOAT IN STORMY WEATHER) signed Balke l.c. oil on board CATALOGUE NOTE Initially trained as a craftsman and decorative painter, and subsequently a student of Dahl (see lot 152), Balke recorded nature with an eye for the dramatic and a technical facility that was deeply idiosyncratic. The main source of Balke's inspiration was a trip he made to northernmost Norway in the early 1830s. The originality of his subsequent work appealed to a wide audience, including King Charles XV of Sweden and King Louis-Philippe of France. The latter commissioned a large series of paintings from Balke. Sadly never carried out, the sketches that Balke submitted for Louis-Philippe's consideration are now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
