ARTURO BALLESTER (Valencia, 1892-1981). Untitled. Ink on paper. Signed and dedicated

        Est: €500 - €600

ARTURO BALLESTER (Valencia, 1892-1981). Untitled. Ink on paper. Signed and dedicated. Size: 25,5 x 13,5 cm; 42 x 32,5 cm (frame). Arturo Ballester was a Spanish graphic designer, illustrator and poster artist, brother of the also artist Vicente Ballester Marco (1887-1980), both of them of anarchist ideology, and companions of Renau. He began his training in the graphic arts in his uncle's studio before attending evening classes at the Valencia School of Fine Arts. From 1913 onwards he took part in poster competitions and won several prizes in Valencia and Madrid. He learns lithography techniques and takes an interest in all the graphic and artistic schools. He joins the CNT trade union in Valencia. Develops his own very characteristic style inspired by Dadaism and Constructivism. He designs above all for the national propaganda committee of the CNT and the PSOE. In addition to posters, Arturo Ballester also designed magazine and book covers and postcards, including a series on childhood in collaboration with Antonio Machado. The fate of children is one of his favourite themes; for him, boys and girls are equal, and he does not hesitate to address issues of nature protection and biodiversity in the midst of war. After the defeat, Arturo Ballester resumed his work as a graphic artist and poster designer, and from 1941 to at least 1954 he designed, among other things, film posters. In 1979, a retrospective in Valencia on his work (mainly war posters) brought him belated recognition. He died in oblivion and poverty at the age of 89.
