    May. 13, 2008

Stephen Bambury "And the Fundamental Reality" rust

    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Stephen Bambury "And the Fundamental Reality" rust and acrylic on two aluminium panels title inscribed, signed and dated '02 verso 390 x 780mm Stephen Bambury's ongoing commitment to abstraction continues to produce works of material and conceptual beauty. The Cartesian Circle series of which this is an example, pairs rust pigment with resin and acrylic on aluminium panels. Polymer is applied to the aluminium with the artist allowing some natural settling before pushing it into place across both panels. This gives physical depth to the painting, while at the same time creating a surface for the upper pigments to adhere to. Often in these resin works, the working drawing is clearly visible beneath, pencil marks and scored ruled lines revealing the artists hand. In this work the velvety texture of the rust pigment contrasts with the flat sheen of the acrylic. Saturated pigments absorb the light while the luster of acrylic reflects it. This absorption and reflection changes according to light conditions, conc aling and revealing different aspects of the surface. Close examination of the composition reveals that Bambury's geometry is invariably skewed. Angles are oblique, crosses rarely line up and are off centre. With his continual and concentrated exploration within the seemingly tight confines of geometric abstraction, Bambury manages to renew and enliven his core ideas of duality and opposition. Emma Fox

  • Stephen Bambury "In a Certain Space" copper,
    Oct. 16, 2007

Stephen Bambury "In a Certain Space" copper,

    Est: $5,500 - $6,500

Stephen Bambury "In a Certain Space" copper, silver and 23k gold on two aluminium panels title inscribed, signed and dated 2001 verso 170mm x 340mm Stephen Bambury has been committed to abstraction for his entire career, one that stretches over thirty years. Within apparently restricted confines Bambury has negotiated an extensive and diverse space for his practice. A central element is the dissolution of the multiple dualities that appear in his work. They might be geometric, compositional, material and indeed conceptual. The architecture of the object and its interaction with physical space as opposed to a framed painterly or illusionistic space is a fundamental quality that has set Bambury aside. The works capacity to radiate both at a material and an architectonic level gives these small paintings a presence that belies their scale. Bambury's work has emerged as one of the most diligent and relentless expressions of the possibility of painting freed from noose of formalist dogma. The works capacity to carry metaphorical and narrative meaning, the diversity & individuality of his material culture, allied to his capacity to have the painting interact in the viewers physical and psychological space makes him a special figure within our visual culture. Stephen Bambury is represented by Jensen, Auckland and Jonathan Smart, Christchurch. EF
