His research on insulin would have a vital, life-saving impact on generations of people diagnosed with diabetes. Banting also served bravely in the First World War, treating soldiers injured both by conventional weapons as well as those affected by poison gas attacks. Banting was wounded in 1918 and awarded the Military Cross "for bravery and determination under fire". Banting also worked at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and, for a brief period, had a private practice in London, Ontario. For his contribution to the discovery of insulin, Banting was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine - the first Canadian to win recognition from this august body - and was knighted in 1934. While such accomplishments would have sufficed to satisfy any other run-of-the-mill Renaissance man or woman, Banting also pursued the art of painting which would become a great passion and at which he became exceptionally accomplished. While he would never in his lifetime gain the reputation from painting that he achieved in the world of medical research, Stephen Hume asserts that “By the 1920s Banting had become one of Canada’s best known amateur painters.” Hume’s use of “amateur” to describe the artist’s work was not pejorative rather it is based on the fact that Banting could never support himself on the proceeds he made from the sporadic sales of his paintings. Jackson writes extensively about his arctic holiday with Dr. Banting. According to Jackson: “Dr. Banting was very interested in the north country and owned an Arctic library of many volumes.” In the summer of 1927, the artist and doctor travelled north for six weeks on board the Beothic. Barry Fair writes: “Their Arctic trip was a triumph for both men. Banting had spent over six weeks sketching, the longest single period in his lifetime. The sense of freedom, stimulated by the trip, resulted in great improvement in his art work and encouraged him. On the first day at sea, he had thrown his white collar overboard as a symbol of his release from the confines of his research and social burdens.” Jackson and Banting made a second trip north the following year and it was on this second voyage that they visited Fort Resolution, the subject of this lot. Jackson writes: “In the summer the Indians congregate at Resolution, where they erect tents and teepees, making of the settlement a most picturesque place.” Fort Resolution is situated on the mouth of the Slave River on the shore of Great Slave Lake. According to an inscription on the backing, this work was painted in 1929.Fort Resolution is sold together with a small oil sketch (see website for image) depicting mountains with a lone tree in the foreground. According to the consignor of this lot, the painting is the work of Charles Best, Banting’s colleague in the discovery of insulin.

Burnt Lake, Dorset, Ontario was painted in 1932 while Banting was spending time in the Haliburton area with his friends Dee and Archibald Wells, who later loaned the work to the 1943 Hart House Exhibition. Around 1970, Mrs. Wells gifted this painting to its current owner, who was her physician at that time.

Hipwell, Toronto By descent to the present Private Collection, Ontario Exhibited:Hart House, University of Toronto, Exhibition of Paintings of the late Sir Frederick Banting, February 13 - March 1, 1943 Inscribed on verso by the artist: ""To Freddie H Aug 26 / 33, 'Many Happy Returns' as the girl said"" and also inscribed ""Dr. Hipwell, 172 Rosedale Heights Dr., Toronto"" Dr. Frederick Banting, world-famous as the co-discoverer of insulin, was also a talented artist. While practicing as a medical doctor, his interest in culture drew him to the Toronto Arts and Letters Club where, among others, he met Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson. They became friends, and Banting joined Jackson on some important sketching trips to the Arctic, Quebec and Northern Ontario, resulting in significant works for both artists. This richly colourful, atmospheric 1933 work is comparable in style and execution to some of the best sketches that Jackson painted in Georgian Bay in the mid-1930s. Honey Harbour is at the south-east end of Georgian Bay, and is dotted with countless small islands and outcrops. This painting was a gift from Banting to Dr. Fred Hipwell, his first cousin and friend, someone who "was, and always would be, his greatest chum." Dr. Hipwell and his wife were intimately involved in the progress of Banting and Dr. Charles Best in the early 1920s, as they lived near the laboratory where the discovery of insulin was made.

A man who began his life as a straightforward fellow from an unpretentious rural upbringing, Banting was unprepared for many of the complexities brought on by his success. Stresses, both professional and personal, led him to flee Toronto whenever possible, and in March of 1927 he undertook his first sketching trip with A.Y. Jackson to Quebeçois villages along the St. Lawrence. This charming scene of the village of Sainte-Fidèle was executed during another trip with Jackson in 1930; it deftly portrays the simple rural landscape which Banting so loved. Visiting these small towns and living amongst their residents, he discovered a way of life that he thought was vanishing. He sought to capture these scenes both as a return to his youth and an escape from everyday life. In his travel diary, he wrote, "The more I think of the city the more I want to live in the country, and the more I think of being a professor of research the more I want to be an artist."

In 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and became the first Canadian ever to receive the prestigious award. Less known by the public were Banting's accomplishments as an artist. The creative aspect of art and the sketching trips he took with Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson aided him greatly when he was confronted with his rigorous research schedule. Art was an escape, which he thoroughly enjoyed, and he was very talented. His body of work was a visual expression of his love for Canada and became a part of his personal legacy. Jackson and Banting made early and frequent trips to the province of Quebec. Jackson introduced Banting to the Laurentians in winter arou d La Malbaie and Baie-Saint-Paul. This scene, most likely painted in late summer or early autumn, could be either northern Ontario or Quebec, and is a testament to Banting's consummate skill as an artist. On verso of the work is a loose pencil sketch of a native figure with the outline of an Indian headdress. "

Instead, he became a Nobel Prize winning doctor, famous for his co-discovery of insulin. This brilliant doctor was also a gifted artist, who began to paint in the 1920s while starting his medical practice. Joining Toronto's Arts and Letters Club, he came in contact with the Group of Seven, and his friendship and sketching trips with Group member A.Y. Jackson sparked an exponential leap in his development. Traveling to the Arctic, Quebec and northern Ontario, they shared an easy camaraderie, a love of the land and its people and a keen interest in the aesthetics of painting. Methodist Church, Port Hope is a striking, layered composition possessing fresh colour nd strong patterning in the snow, rooftops and clouds; its strong focal point the stately church at the heart of the town. Due to Banting's career as a doctor and his untimely death at the age of 49, his extraordinary artistic output was limited, and the rarity of his works makes them all the more sought after by collectors. His untimely death in an airplane accident at the age of 50 was shocking news worldwide, and perhaps to none more than to his great friend, A.Y. Jackson. With more exposure in recent years to the oil sketches produced by Banting in the company of Jackson on their many sketching trips to the far north and throughout Quebec after 1927, one can observe his growing maturity as a painter. Typically, those works are small landscape panels painted outdoors, and so it is rare to come across larger studio canvases like Rooftops, Quebec City, a work which demonstrates Banting's growing confidence in his ability to handle a complex subject. This work's rich colour, play of angular design and handling of light and shadow make for a lively view of Quebec City.
