Den Kopf leicht geneigt und mit Glanz in den Augen schaut das Mädchen schüchtern dem Betrachter entgegen. Greuze war einer der bedeutendsten französischen Maler des Spätrokoko, doch wurde die hohe künstlerische Qualität seiner Werke, die heute Spitzenpreise erreichen können, erst später wiederentdeckt. Erst mit 25 Jahren wurde Greuze in Paris an der Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture als Schüler der angegliederten École royale de peinture et de sculpture angenommen. Zum Großteil wurde er dort von Charles Joseph Natoire unterrichtet. 1755-1757 unternahm er lange Studienreisen nach Italien mit Aufenthalten in Florenz, Rom und Neapel. 1757 kehrte Greuze nach Paris zurück, wirkte dort als freischaffender Maler. In seinem künstlerischen Schaffen noch ganz dem Rokoko verbunden, kam Greuze jedoch sehr schnell aus der Mode. Der Zenit seiner Karriere war schon überschritten, als er 1765 an der Ausstellung des Pariser Salons teilnahm und gleichzeitig in der Académie royale ausstellte. 1768 wurde er als Vollmitglied in die Académie royale aufgenommen. Einen Schwerpunkt seines Oeuvres bilden Porträts weiblicher Schönheiten, liebliche Mädchen- und Kinderbildnisse. Öl/Lwd., doubl.; Verso altes Etikett mit englischer Bez. u. An exquisite and impressive gold enamel verge pocket watch with "à toc" quarter repeater Movm. No. 3049, Dimensions 47 mm, circa 1750, Weight 102 g, Origin Frankreich Case: 18 K gold, translucent Champlevé enamel decoration, charge mark Julien Berthe (1750-1756), Parisian guild punch mark "K" for the years 1750-1751. Dial: Enamel, vertical Roman numerals. Movm.: Full plate movement, chain/fusee, 2 hammers, three-arm steel balance. The back of the case is elaborately decorated with champlevé enamel. Beautifully crafted blue morning glories, cornflowers and leaf tendrils in shades of blue and dark blue adorn the back of the case and the bezel on the front, which is embellished with a white and blue decorative band. The background is made of 18 K gold and features a guilloché pattern. Provenance: Lukas Stolberg collection. This watch is illustrated and described in his book "Ich trage, wo ich gehe, stets eine Uhr bei mir. Die Taschenuhr im Wandel der Zeit" (I always carry a watch with me wherever I go. The pocket watch through the ages), Klagenfurt 1980, p. 72. Jean-Baptiste Baillon (de Fontenay) was a very famous - and in the 18th century the richest - watch- and clockmaker in Paris. In 1727 he became a master; he had his own manufactory in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, where he had several makers working for him - quite unusual at the time. The factory was run by Jean Jodin (1715-1761); it closed in 1765. Ferdinand Berthoud was very impressed by Baillon's business, he admired its size and the excellent quality that was produced. In 1753 Berthoud wrote about Baillon's shop: "Nowadays this is the most beautiful and most wealthy watch shop. Diamonds are not only used for pocket watches but even for clocks". Around 1770 Baillon was appointed watch- and clockmaker to the court of Queen Marie Antoinette, "Premier Valet de Chambre and Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire de la Dauphine to Marie-Antoinette". In 1772 Jean-Baptiste-Albert Baillon died a very rich man. His assets were worth around 384.000 livres. Remarkable is the empty field in the upper left corner, probably intended for text which was never engraved due to rapid changes to the Central European 'map' during the German War of Independence which gathered full momentum when Napoleon and the remnants of his Grande Armee retreated from Russia. We can only trace one other copy held in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Camille Corot, Jean- Baptiste (French, 1796-1875) Etching print on paper - Imprint on lower left. Titled "Souvenir of Tuscany". Paper measures to 9x11 framed to the overall size of 10x12.5. The Barbizon school of painters were part of an art movement towards Realism in art, which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. The Barbizon school was active roughly from 1830-1870. It takes its name from the village of Barbizon, France, near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. Some of the most prominent features of this school are its tonal qualities, color, loose brushwork, and softness of form. In the spring of 1829, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot came to Barbizon to paint in the Forest of Fontainebleau, he had first painted in the forest at Chailly in 1822. He returned to Barbizon in the autumn of 1830 and in the summer of 1831, where he made drawings and oil studies, from which he made a painting intended for the Salon of 1830; "View of the Forest of Fontainebleau'" (now in the National Gallery in Washington) and, for the salon of 1831, another "View of the Forest of Fontainebleau"'. While there he met the members of the Barbizon school; Theodore Rousseau, Paul Huet, Constant Troyon, Jean-François Millet, and the young Charles-François Daubigny. During the late 1860s, the Barbizon painters attracted the attention of a younger generation of French artists studying in Paris. Several of those artists visited Fontainebleau Forest to paint the landscape, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille. In the 1870s those artists, among others, developed the art movement called Impressionism and practiced "Plein Air Painting."
