    Reginald Barber,  Morning Call

    Est: £200 - £300

Reginald Barber,  British 1851-1928-  Morning Call;  oil on canvas, feigned tondo, signed with monogram and dated '18 RB 86' (lower right), 35 x 35 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 7 November 1996, lot 146.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Barber lived and worked in Manchester for much of his life, giving private art lessons to L.S. Lowry (1887-1976), arguably the most famous Manchester painter of the 19th and 20th centuries, between 1898 and 1903. The theme of a lone female figure, often deep in thought, was one which Barber repeatedly returned to over the course of his career, as in a painting which sold at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, on 19 May 2022 (lot 457) for £2,600.

  • REGINALD BARBER (British, 1851-1928) Portrait of a Woman 1888 watercolour, pencil, scratching-out on paper
    Aug. 25, 2020

REGINALD BARBER (British, 1851-1928) Portrait of a Woman 1888 watercolour, pencil, scratching-out on paper

    Est: $10,000 - $16,000

REGINALD BARBER (British, 1851-1928) Portrait of a Woman 1888 watercolour, pencil, scratching-out on paper signed with artists monogram and dated lower left: 18 RBB 88 55 x 44cm PROVENANCE: Michael John Decorative Arts Ltd, London Acquired from the above on 12 June 1984 OTHER NOTES: The handsome and finely worked drawing "Portrait of a Woman" reflects the strong influence of the second wave Pre-Raphaelite movement which dominated artistic thought in London from the 1860s through to the 1890s. The model, reputed to be Dorothy Dene, represents an ideal of beauty parallel to that espoused by Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Little is known of Barber's career, though he is regarded as a portrait and genre painter. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he was awarded a silver medal at the age of 19, before moving to Manchester. He became the vice-president of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and between 1898 and 1930 gave private art lessons to L S Lowry.
