Alfredo Barbini Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1912 - d. 2007

Alfredo Barbini, a glass artist born in 1912 on the islands of Murano in the lagoon of Venice, Italy, was one of Murano's leading figures of the twentieth century. His parents were members of families which had been prominent in the glassmaking industry on Murano for generations as glassblowers and beadmakers.

Barbini began his long career in 1925 at the age of 13, working in the S.A.I.A.R. Ferro Toso factory. In 1929 he joined Cristalleria di Venezia e Murano as a master glassblower. He left that firm in 1932 for employment with a glass workshop in Milan, but returned to Murano to work first at the newly formed Zecchin & Martinuzzi firm and then with Seguso Vetri d'Arte. From 1936 to 1944 he was a partner and master glassblower at Societa Anonima Vetri Artistici Murano, known as S.A.V.A.M.

Following World War II Barbini worked as master glassblower and designer successively with Archimede Seguso and Napoleone Martinuzzi, then became a partner with Vetreria Vistosi and, later, Gino Cenedese. With financial assistance from the firm of Salviati & C., for whom he produced products, he formed in 1950 his own glass firm, Vetreria Alfredo Barbini (reorganized in 1983 as Alfredo Barbini Srl). His firm exhibited his work at the Venice Biennales from 1950 to 1961. He died in 2007.

Alfredo Barbini (1912-2007) Italian, Murano Art Glass Apple

    Est: $150 - $300

Alfredo Barbini (1912-2007) Italian, Murano Art Glass Apple. Beautiful multi-color piece with a delicate stem and leaf adornment.  Size: 5 x 6 x 4 1/2 in.  #9026 .    Alfredo Barbini was born in 1912 on the island of Murano in the waters near Venice, Italy. His family had worked in glassmaking for many generations, and by the age of ten he was studying the craft as well at Abate Zanetti, the design school attached to the Murano Glass museum. He then went on to work for Ferro Toso in 1925, followed soon by a move to Cristalleria Murano in 1929. After moving briefly to Milan for work in 1932 he returned to Murano, first joining Zecchin-Martinuzzi and then Seguso Vetri d’Arte. From 1936 to 1944 he was a partner and master glassblower for Societa Anonima Vetri Artistici Muranesi. In 1946 he became a partner with Archimede Seguso, then with Napoleone Martinuzzi in 1947, and finally Gino Cenedese in 1948. In 1950, with financial assistance from the firm of Salviati & Co., he opened his own glassworks, Vetreria Alfredo Barbini. In exchange, Barbini supplied Salviati with some of the glassware they produced, which explains why some known Barbini designs can be found with Salviati labels. Through his exquisite exhibitions at each Venice Biennale from 1950 to 1961 he became world-famous for his heavy, thick sculptural forms that won numerous awards. In 1952 Alfredo’s daughter Oceania Barbini-Moretti joined the glassworks and became the company’s sales manager. His son Flavio became a designer for the firm in 1968. Barbini was awarded the “Osella d’Oro” by Venice’s Associazione degli Industriale in 1980, and was given the honorary title “Commendatore” and named “1989 Venetian of the Year” by the Settimare Association. He passed away in 2007, and his personally designed Murano art glass has been highly sought after ever since.

Provenance: Private Collection, Ithaca, New York. About the collection: The late collector's wife recalls their first glass purchase in a London antique shop circa 1985, which ignited a 30+ year passion for the genre. The couple and their daughter acquired pieces individually during their travels around Western Europe, Toronto, and New York, and ultimately amassed around 300 vessels and sculptures by artists including Fulvio Bianconi, Toots Zynsky, Carlo Scarpa, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Vittorio Ferro and others. "My husband became a student of the art he collected," recalls Mrs. N. and their daughter. "With each new artist he admired, he would buy books about them, and the biographies and catalogs became catalysts for acquiring more pieces. He was always looking for variety, and he would seek out individual pieces to round out a segment of the collection. When something caught his eye, he pounced on it, and if he couldn't have that particular piece, he'd search for one like it."

    Est: $200 - $400

Alfredo Barbini (1912-2007) Italian, 3 Vintage Murano Art Glass Christmas Trees. One with controlled bubbles and a jellyfish-like pattern inside, the other two shorter with a twisted design, all incorporating gold color in their interior lines and shapes.  Size: (largest ) 3 1/2 x 10 1/2 in.  #4335 . In 1946 he became a partner with Archimede Seguso, then with Napoleone Martinuzzi 1947, and finally Gino Cenedese in 1948.
