SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). "Fire in Rome". Oil on canvas.

Lot 51: SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). "Fire in Rome". Oil on canvas.

Auction Date: Sep 29, 2021

Estimate: €9,000 - €10,000

Description: SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ-BARBUDO MORALES (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1857 - Rome, 1917). "Fire in Rome". Oil on canvas. Signed and located in the lower right corner. Measurements: 39 x 65 cm; 68 x 95 cm (frame). Work reproduced in "Cien años de pintura en España y Portugal (1830-1930)", volume 10, p. 65 (Madrid, Antiqvaria, 1988-1993). In this work, Sánchez-Barbudo depicts a landscape of contrasting light, with a field in shadow illuminated in the background by the flames of a fire in the city of Rome. It is a distinctly modern landscape, characterised by the contrasting effects of light and by an atmosphere of great naturalism, based on colour applied with mutable brushstrokes, shorter and more precise in some areas, almost invisible in others, and dense and directional in the sky, the silhouettes silhouetted in the background, etc. Interested in drawing and painting from an early age, Sánchez-Barbudo began his training in the workshop of the restorer Pedro Vera. At the age of nineteen he moved to Seville to study at the Provincial School of Fine Arts, thanks to the support of his protector and patron, the Marquis del Castillo, where he became a pupil of José Villegas. In 1878 he travelled to Madrid to further his training, remaining in the capital for four years. In 1881 he took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts and was awarded a third-class medal for his work "Un salón de esgrima" ("A Fencing Salon"). The following year he went to Rome with his master. Due to his master's influence, and given that Villegas was a friend of Rosales, Fortuny, Zamacois and others, as well as a painter with a magnificent clientele (Vanderbilt, Stuard, Krupp...), Sánchez-Barbudo was initiated into the fashionable genre, costumbrista historicism (known as casacón subject matter). Fascinated by the artistic atmosphere of the Italian capital, Sánchez-Barbudo decided to settle in the city and, from then on, to make the city the protagonist of his painting. In addition to the themes of casacons, he also produced small-format paintings of high society scenes and landscapes, and was particularly noted for his portraits. He occasionally sent works to the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid. In 1884 he sent to Spain the monumental canvas entitled "Hamlet. Last Scene", with which he won a second medal at the National Exhibition of the same year. He exported his works especially to England, where his historicist genre paintings were extraordinarily well received, and he himself enjoyed a reputation as an exquisite painter. Sánchez-Barbudo showed in his works a perfect mastery of the basics of the genre: a skilful combination of bourgeois naturalism and loosely executed preciosity. His brushstroke is rapid and precise, and he gives the chromaticism a totally personal vibrancy and variety. He worked on the basis of small touches, both in the figures and in the scenes, paying special attention to the atmosphere....

Auction Date: Dec 17, 2020

Estimate: €3,500 - €4,550

Description: Oil on canvas. Signed and located in Rome. The subject matter, unusual in the production of a Spanish painter, could recall that of various literary, historical or legendary characters, in particular that of the Lady of Shalott, made popular by the Victorian poet Alfred Tennyson, which, in turn, was based on a 13th century Italian novel about "Donna di Scalotta". This iconography was particularly successful among artists before Raphael. Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo (1857-1917), The Nobleman, c. 1900

Lot 133: Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo (1857-1917), The Nobleman, c. 1900

Auction Date: Apr 19, 2016

Estimate: €5,000 - €6,500

Description: Oil on cradled panel
Italy, Rome, around 1900
Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo (1857-1917) – Spanish genre painter
Signed and inscribed lower left ‘Barbudo Roma’
Dimensions: 35.8 x 22.9 cm
Decorative frame: 73.5 x 62 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Germany
Especially popular are the costume images of Barbudo in lush designed interiors in the style of the rococo; the auction record for a similar subject matter by the artist is currently placed at a hammer price of around €90,000

Barbudo's work covers a range of modes, including contemporary genre and society pictures, as well as historical essays in several periods. His best known work, however, probes the aristocratic way of life through the lens of the rococo by the means of the ‘conversation piece’, which is itself a rococo form. The present work is closely related to a ‘An Afternoon in the Salon’ (fig. 1), sold at Christie's on March 26, 1999 (lot 84) for £67,500. It may have been painted as a pendant to it or in association with two other paintings on panel. The interior is the same and the sitter also appears in ‘An Afternoon in the Salon’. He is suspiciously watching something or someone that we cannot see, his face a mask of controlled anger as his fingers toy with the fragile shaft of his frivolously decorated cane, which could perhaps be a metaphor for a particular woman. Where the figures in the Salon are enjoying gossip, the nobleman suspects he has become a subject of gossip, and sinister consequences loom. Another painting showing the same figure in more genial mood is ‘An Engaging Conversation’ (fig. 2), which was painted on a related size of panel. Barbudo evidently made a number of subtly anecdotal character studies on these panels, which perhaps come closer to catching the esprit du temps than his larger conversation pieces; later in life he reproduced them in smaller and sketchier form. The Nobleman, on a full-size panel, belongs to the height of his prowess, as his style began to take on a richer impasto starting in around 1900. It is one of the strongest and subtlest of his character studies of such a fascinating inner tension.

Condition:
The painting is in very good condition. The wooden panel measures 35.8 x 22.9 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 73.5 x 62 cm.

Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo (1857-1917)
Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo was amongst the leading painters of the colony of Spanish painters who had settled in Rome. He was born in Andalusia and moved to Rome in 1882, where he often visited the studio of José Villegas, who was also from Andalusia and who worked in the circles around Federico de Madrazo and Mariano Fortuny. He called Barbudo his best pupil. Except for Rome, Barbudo also spent a lot of time in Venice with his friend Rafael Senet and created landscape and genre paintings. A painting showing the last act of Hamlet received a prize at the Art Exhibition of Madrid in 1886. Barbudo’s works were very positively received by the Italian critics. He was named ‘one of the best interpreters of the picturesque Italy’ in 1888. He exhibited in Rome, Venice, Munich and Paris and was honored with a medal at the Paris Salon in 1895. (tm)

Where the figures in the Salon are enjoying gossip, the nobleman suspects he has become a subject of gossip, and sinister consequences loom. Another painting showing the same figure in more genial mood is 'An Engaging Conversation' (fig.

Barbudo's works were very positively received by the Italian critics. He was named 'one of the best interpreters of the picturesque Italy' in 1888. He exhibited in Rome, Venice, Munich and Paris and was honored with a medal at the Paris Salon in 1895. (tm)

Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo (1857-1917), The Nobleman, c. 1900

Lot 43: Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo (1857-1917), The Nobleman, c. 1900

Auction Date: Dec 02, 2014

Estimate: €12,800 - €16,000

Description: Italy, Rome, around 1900
Salvador Sanchez-Barbudo (1857-1917) - Spanish genre painter
Signed and inscribed lower left 'Barbudo Roma'
Decorative frame
Dimensions: 35.8 x 22.9 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Germany
Especially popular are the costume images of Barbudo in lush designed interiors in the style of the rococo; the auction record for a similar subject matter by the artist is currently placed at a hammer price of around €90,000

Barbudo's work covers a range of modes, including contemporary genre and society pictures, as well as historical essays in several periods. His best known work, however, probes the aristocratic way of life through the lens of the rococo by the means of the 'conversation piece', which is itself a rococo form. The present work is closely related to a 'An Afternoon in the Salon' (fig. 1), sold at Christie's on March 26, 1999 (lot 84) for £67,500. It may have been painted as a pendant to it or in association with two other paintings on panel. The interior is the same and the sitter also appears in 'An Afternoon in the Salon'. NOTE

Visita con el cardenal combines the two most salient characteristics of Sánchez-Barbudo's work: the search for novelty of theme and narrative content, and the use of minutely detailed brushwork and luminosity. Sánchez-Barbudo, in common with other Spaniards working in Rome, including Pradilla (lots104 & 163) and Salinas (lots 154 and 160), specialised in elaborate 'costume pictures', delighting the viewer with impressive details finely rendered with dazzling technical virtuosity.

Here, Sánchez-Barbudo depicts a well-to-do bourgeois family receiving a cardinal in their home. The interior, sumptuously furnished in the rococo style, along with the rich costumes and fabrics, are beautifully observed. Yet beyond the high technique lavished upon the composition, the treatment is comic and full of character and suffused with a gently satirising anti-clericalism.

The cardinal, far from getting the attention he expects, is, literally, sidelined, his expression and body language showing his pique. There is no doubt that contemporary collectors and spectators took pleasure in the sight of noble self-respecting figureheads of the church being brought back down to earth. The comedy was appealing, and the message suited the prevailing political mood of an increasingly secular middle-class buying public.
