Georges BAREAU (1866-1931), d'après David devant Saul Épreuve en régule à patine médaille reposant sur un socle en marbre griotte. Signé en creux sur la terrasse avec la mention "Salon 1893". Plaquette descriptive "Au vaillant directeur de la VOGESIA, les membres associés présents au concours de Genève août 1902". c. 1902 H. sans socle : 65 cm H. avec socle : 72 cm (Le bras droit ressoudé, usure de la patine par endroits). Piédestal à section ronde en chêne mouluré de fines cannelures desservant un plateau de soutien rectangulaire. H. : 110 cm (État d'usage). Les Affiches de Strasbourg rapportaient dans leur numéro du 20 décembre 1902 la remise de ce bronze à M. Xavier Schmitt, baguette de direction de La Fanfare de Schiltigheim en 1891 puis directeur de la fanfare Vogésia, dans les termes suivants : "Une grande couronne, hommage de ses amis personnels, un surtout de table en argent massif que lui ont offert les membres actifs, et le superbe bronze artistique de Bareau, représentant David devant Saül, que les membres associés de la Vogésia ont donné à M. Xavier Schmitt, complétaient [...] l’exposition des souvenirs se rattachant à l’éclatant succès artistique de la fanfare Vogésia au concours musical international de Genève" (Affiches de Strasbourg, "Échos artistiques", 20 décembre 1902, 170° année, p. 5).

gilt bronze with foundry mark of F. Barbedienne of Paris, inscribed signature, mounted to a marble and bronze plinth. HOA 11 in. Bareau studied at the Ãcole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He first exhibited his work at the Salon in 1899 and was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle a year later. His large scale and decorative sculptures are graceful interpretations of the Art Nouveau style predominate at the turn of the century; admired for their "serenity and purity of line."
