THOMAS OLDHAM BARLOW (ENGLISH, 1824-1889) GEORGE WASHINGTON PRINT, titled The Home of Washington, hand-colored engraving on paper, after Thomas Pritchard Rossiter (American, 1818-1871) and Louis Remy Mignot (American, 1831-1870). This romantic print depicts George Washington at Mount Vernon after the Revolutionary War, standing on the front porch talking with the Marquis de Lafayette, who holds a copy of the Pennsylvania Gazette. Seated at right are Martha Washington with her granddaughter Nellie Custis, and possibly Nellie's mother, Eleanor Custis. At left, a grandson, George Washington Custis, and an enslaved woman play with a toy cannon near two dogs, and a powder horn engraved "1776" lies at the edge of the porch. Housed under glass in a gilt-wood frame. 1863. 19" x 30 1/8" sight, 25 1/2" x 36" OA.
