MATTHEW BARNEY | Cremaster 3: The Song of the Vertical Field

Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: a diptych of chromogenic prints, each in an acrylic artist's frame, the left panel signed in ink and with the photographer's crest engraved, each with a Barbara Gladstone Gallery label, with typed titled, date, and edition number, on the reverse, 2002, no. one in an edition of 3 (2)

Condition Report: This diptych of chromogenic prints is in generally excellent condition. The colors remain vibrant and saturated with no apparent fading. Upon close inspection the following are visible: Left panel: deposits of original retouching on the right door and at the upper edge; Right panel: scattered minor soiling and a scuff at the upper right corner. Upon very close inspection, features of the negative are visible. In the left panel, there are a few small areas that appear to be retouching in the negative. On both panels, red linear marks are visible when the prints are examined very closely in bright light; these also appear to be scratches on the print that were then laminated as there is no disruption to the surface. None of the aforementioned affect the overall fine appearance of the prints. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Matthew Barney, Drawing Restraint 9: Shimenawa, 2005

Estimate: €480 - €600

Description: Offset lithograph in colors; silver colored imprintMatthew Barney (b. 1967) - US-American media artistSigned in black felt pen ‘Matthew Barney’ lower rightTypographical information on the edition and handwritten edition number on the reverseNumber 22 of 250 signed copiesFrom the twelve-part series ‘Drawing Restraint’ (1988-2005)Dimensions: 73 x 51 cmUnder glass in a black wooden frame: 76 x 55 cmVery good conditionOne of Barney’s typical tension-filled and provocative motifsMatthew Barney’s twelve-part series ‘Drawing Restraint’ dates from 1988 to 2005. He built spaces, where he executed climbing and gymnastics exercises, while imposing him physical limitations. The physical resistance, which he felt during these exercises, where then brought into visual forms. For ‘Drawing Restraint 9: Shimenawa’ he produced an art film, which is formally distinct from the previous works of the series. It was created on the occasion of an exhibition in Japan and plays on the whaling ship Nisshin Maru. In the room, there is a form filled with Vaseline, in which sit Barney and his former partner, the Icelandic singer Björk. Barney called the film a meditation through the act of creation, ‘about raw sexual energy and discipline, which requires processing. It is about how to stay creative, where one does not solidify in forms but liquefies them again and again’ [Spiegel Online - Kultur, 16, April 2006].Condition:The work is in very good condition, showing only minor wear to the frame. The sheet dimensions are 73 x 51 cm, and the frame measures 76 x 55 cm.Matthew Barney (b. 1967)Born in San Francisco, Matthew Barney studied Fine Art at the Yale University School of Art, New Haven. He works in the media of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video and examines the transcendence of physical limitations. In this context, he incorporates elements of biology, sexuality, sports, medicine, mythology and history into his work. His most famous work is the art film ‘Cremaster Cycle’ (1994-2002). Description: CONSTIPATOR BLOCK: SHIM BOLUS - OTTO shaft - (transverse) TFE squat - HEMORRHOIDAL DISTRACTOR (2) cast large-pearl tapioca, Teflon, socks, and thermal gel packs overall: 8 1/4 by 144 by 24in. 21 by 365.8 by 61cm. Executed in 1991. CONSTIPATOR BLOCK: shim BOLUS is a visually seductive and enigmatically compelling work in which athletic paraphernalia and metabolically transformative substances coalesce. Made of cast large-pearl tapioca, Teflon, socks and thermal gel packs, the work crosses the threshold between inorganic matter and organic processes. Its tapioca-encrusted barbell, with ends encased in thermal gel packs, embodies the artist's dual fascination with sports and medicine. For Barney, these two disciplines enlist the human body as a willful, yet vulnerable object to be molded and manipulated, acted upon so as to surpass its own limits. This desire for physical prowess in Barney's work equates with sexual conquest. In Barney's esoteric visual language, his chosen materials are all expressly metaphoric: tapioca is a basic carbohydrate and Teflon a metal that surgeons employ for implants; pearls consist of filmy, secreted layers formed around a foreign body and thermal gel packs are vehicles for transferring heat. All of these elements incorporate both a struggle as well as a potential for a change in state, a metabolic, physical or genetic transformation that transcends both the technological and the human. "Barney's work has always involved a carefully balanced combination of exoteric and esoteric elements, aspects that anyone can follow and enjoy mixed in with cryptic signs and personal myths almost impossible to decipher" (Norman Bryson, "Matthew Barney's Gonadotrophic Cavalcade, Parkett, no. 45, Zurich, 1995, p. 29). A key figure in Barney's extraordinary repertoire of personal legends is Jim Otto. The celebrated center for the Oakland Raiders, Otto is a compelling anti-hero: with two artificial knees and a career spurred on by countless injuries, the athlete's body has been opened up to the outside, repeatedly transformed in pursuit of omnipotence. Otto's signature sign, the double zero of his jersey, appears as a referent in CONSTIPATOR BLOCK: shim BOLUS, signalling the vulnerability of the human body via the exposure of its orifices. "Barney has said that the word body is somehow too limiting, and it may well be because the entirety of his work points to a beyond comprised of a mad interplay of forces - the storage and expenditure of energy, motion, and rest (the snap and the delay of game penalty), friction and slippage (tapioca and teflon), expansion and contraction (testicles), opening and closing (orifices)..." (Michel Onfray, "Mannerist Variations on Matthew Barney," Parkett, Ibid., p. 60). While Barney operates with a personal lexicon of deeply loaded signs, he addresses issues that are universal and timeless. Lying at the heart of CONSTIPATOR BLOCK: shim BOLUS is the conscious absence of the human body. This absence provides the space for the viewer to insert himself into the body of the work, and urges him to negotiate the complexity of its terrain. Provenance Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York Acquired by the present owner from the above in 1992 Exhibited San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Matthew Barney: New Work, 1991-1992, cat. no. 10.

NOTES Cremaster 4 is a forty-minute video shot on the Isle of Man, off the coast of Ireland and Scotland, which makes up the first part of the five-site piece Cremaster. The Cremaster 4 video is based on the Island's annual T.T. motorcycle race and follows the structure of a televised sporting event, using various sources indigenous to the location. The cremaster is a muscle which regulates the sex organs (more highly developed in men) and acts as an organic thermostat, contracting and releasing the testicles in cold or heat. The narrative of the video corresponds to the three possibilities of the cremaster with a yellow ascending TT racing team, Barney as the Loughton Candidate (neutral) who corresponds to the Loughton ram-with both ascending and descending horns-indigenous to the Isle of Man, and the blue descending TT racing team. The three are engaged in the race to get to the other side of the Island, turning the Island into an organism.
