Laureano Barrau (1863, Barcelona –1957, Santa Eulària des Riu) was a Spanish impressionist painter.

Education: Barrau began his education in Barcelona, his native city. Later, he studied in Madrid, finding the Spanish old masters. At 20, Barrau went to Paris and enrolled at the Académie des Beaux-Arts where Gerome was his tutor. Two years later, Barrau won the Prix de Rome in Barcelona. This afforded him the opportunity to study the great Italian masters for three years.

Career: When he was 28, Barrau was given the title of Societaire (Member) of the Salon de la Nationales des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He earned medals in the principal cities in Europe and today his paintings hang in museums in Spain, Paris, Brussels, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro.

At age 47, Barrau moved to picturesque Ibiza. He settled with his wife in the town of Santa Eulalia del Rio where he painted what is considered his best work.

End of life: He remained in Santa Eulalia for the rest of his life. He died in 1957 at the age of 94 and is buried in the cemetery in Santa Eulalia.

Full-length male portrait, resolved with the sobriety and elegance typical of the bourgeois portrait of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The character appears standing, dressed in a dark suit and holding a book, an attribute that reinforces his intellectual or professional character. The composition, of great verticality, stands out for the restraint of the gesture, the dignity of the pose and the neutral background of warm tonality, which concentrates the attention on the figure. Barrau builds the portrait with a soft painting, attentive to the modeling of the face and hands, while the costume is integrated in a dark range of blacks and browns. The work reflects his mastery of the portrait genre and his training in academic realism, tinged by a luminist sensibility that would mark much of his later production. Laureà Barrau trained at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona and furthered his studies in Paris, where he came into contact with the European painting of his time. He cultivated portraits, genre scenes and landscapes, especially after his connection with Ibiza, an island that would occupy a central place in his work. He is represented in institutions such as the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and the Museu Barrau de Santa Eulària des Riu.

Trained at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona and disciple of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris, Barrau began his career with large canvases of historical themes that earned him recognition in the European Salons, but his style reached maturity when he freed himself from academic rigidity in search of pure light. In 1911 he moved to Ibiza, settling permanently in Puig de Missa (Santa Eulalia), where his painting was transformed into an explosion of luminosity and transparencies focused on coastal landscapes, market scenes and popular Ibizan types. His work stands out for his masterful handling of the color white and the reflections of the sun on the sea, which has led him to be compared to Sorolla for his ability to capture the luminous instant, although with his own sensibility that combines social realism with a poetic and serene vision of Mediterranean life. Currently, his legacy can be visited in his House-Museum in Santa Eulalia del Río, where a large part of the work he produced during his decades of stay on the island is preserved.

He began his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Antonio Caba. Shortly after, he made a trip to Madrid to broaden his training with the study of the great masters of the Prado Museum. In 1884 the City Council of Barcelona granted him the Fortuny Pension to further his studies in Rome for three years. However, with the money from the travel grant Barrau moved to Paris, where he entered the Academy of Fine Arts, with Jean-Léon Gérôme as his tutor. In 1885, already in Rome, he studied the Italian masters and began to send to Barcelona the works that corresponded to him as a pensioner. From 1887 he exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, one of the most important Spanish galleries of the time, and the most prominent in Catalonia. That year his painting "The Surrender of Gerona" was a great success with critics and the public, as it was a totally personal treatment of the genre of history painting, more vibrant and emotional. At the same time, Barrau participated frequently in official exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In 1888 he was awarded a second medal at the International Exhibition in Barcelona, and a second prize at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels. Three years later, in 1891, he received the title of member of the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts of Paris, and the following year he was awarded a third medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid for his work "Escardadora". In 1904 he obtained a second medal at the same exhibition for "Taponeras del Ampurdán". Barrau also held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, New York and Rome. In 1909 he settled in Buenos Aires, where his work enjoyed the same success and recognition as in Spain and Europe, and after returning he settled permanently in Ibiza in 1911. From there he continued to show his work both in Spain and abroad, and in 1929 he was named "Societarie" of the Paris Salons. Barrau's work starts from an initial language linked to his neoclassical training, and evolves to reach a new concept characterized by luminosity and chromatic transparencies. The theme of childhood is recurrent in Barrau: not as a sentimental idealization, but as a symbol of purity and vitality, a presence that humanizes the elegant spaces of the bourgeoisie and brings warmth to his painting. This painting belongs to his mature or transitional stage, when he is interested in domestic interiors and portraits of female or child figures, which allow him to explore the effects of light and color in intimate contexts. In the center of the composition, an adolescent girl, her face lit by the heat, warms her hands in front of a stove. In 1885, already in Rome, he studied the Italian masters and began to send to Barcelona the works that corresponded to him as a pensioner. From 1887 he exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, one of the most important Spanish galleries of the time, and the most prominent in Catalonia. That year his painting "The Surrender of Gerona" was a great success with critics and the public, as it was a totally personal treatment of the genre of history painting, more vibrant and emotional. At the same time, Barrau participated frequently in official exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In 1888 he was awarded a second medal at the International Exhibition in Barcelona, and a second prize at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels. Three years later, in 1891, he received the title of member of the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts of Paris, and the following year he was awarded a third medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid for his work "Escardadora". In 1904 he obtained a second medal at the same exhibition for "Taponeras del Ampurdán". Barrau also held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, New York and Rome. In 1909 he settled in Buenos Aires, where his work enjoyed the same success and recognition as in Spain and Europe, and after returning he settled permanently in Ibiza in 1911. It is Palm Sunday and the people wave their palms before the ecclesiastical procession, with their crucifixes and banners. The altar boys occupy the compositional center. Their red tunics seem to lend their color to their flaming cheeks. The white of the surcoats absorbs the clear daylight. One of the altar boys waves a censer and the whimsical movement of the smoke clouds intensify the instantaneous force of the frame. After finishing high school, Laureà Barrau enrolled in the School of Engineering to follow in his father's footsteps. The artist combined his studies with the Drawing and Painting classes that he received at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts. It was in this prestigious academy where he had the opportunity to receive lessons taught by painters such as Claudio Lorenzale and Antonio Caba. When he decided to start his career in Fine Arts, he began a trip to Madrid in 1882, a stay that he took advantage of to copy the works of the great artists that were exhibited in the Prado Museum. The latter exerted a great influence on Barrau's art, A fact that becomes evident when comparing the paintings The Capitulation of Girona (1887), by Barrau, and The Surrender of Granada, by Pradilla. It has bands of reinforcement in the margins. For this work Barrau was awarded the second medal at the 1904 National Fine Arts Competition. Referenced in the newspaper Cedeon nº 443, in volume LXXVII of the magazine Ilustración Española y Americana, in the book Arte, Poder y Sociedad en la España de los siglos XV a XX pág. 413 and on the official website of the Museo del Prado, which owns Barrau's work "Escardadoras" which received the third medal in 1892. Size: 100 x 130 cm; 126 x 155 cm (frame). This oil painting shows Laureano Barrau's mastery in the handling of light and his audacity to compose intimate and poetic scenes. Four taponeras work in silence in a room through whose window the brightness of the day filters in backlighting, causing the sun's reflections to glitter on the women's features and the wicker baskets. The youngest, with a knotted scarf around her neck, receives more light and attracts our attention, even though we can barely see her face. The satin cotton shirt, the sheen of her black hair and her crimson flesh tones tell us of her youth and inexperience, in contrast to the more weathered faces and worn-out clothes of the veterans. Barrau freezes the instant and sublimates it, so that the scene is imbued with a cadence that is both timeless and instantaneous. It is a magical impression that the artist achieves thanks to his extreme mastery of range, applied with light, rapid brushstrokes. Laureano Barrau began his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Antonio Caba. Shortly afterwards he travelled to Madrid to broaden his training by studying the great masters of the Prado Museum. In 1884 the Barcelona City Council granted him the Fortuny Pension to extend his studies in Rome for three years. However, with the money from the travel grant Barrau moved to Paris, where he entered the Academy of Fine Arts, with Jean-Léon Gérôme as his tutor. In 1885, already in Rome, he studied the Italian masters and began to send to Barcelona the works that corresponded to him as a boarder.
