Cyril Henry Barraud, British 1877-1965- The Procession; pencil and watercolour heightened with touches of white on paper, signed 'Cyril Barraud' (lower left), bears label inscribed '"The Procession" / Cyril Barraud. / Royal Oak Cottage / Coggeshall / Essex' attached to the backing board, 42 x 39.2 cm. ARR. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Barraud trained at the Brighton School of Art and then worked as a manager at his father's photographic business before becoming a full-time artist. Between 1912 and 1924, he exhibited at London's Royal Academy of Arts. He was close to his uncle, the painter Francis Barraud (1856-1924) and helped him with the final version of 'His Master's Voice'. Barraud travelled to Canada in 1913, settling in Manitoba. During the First World War, he was commissioned by 'The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada' (43 Battalion) and, after being wounded in the left leg, was posted to the Canadian War Office as an official war artist. An extensive collection of his wartime work is in the collection of the Canadian War Museum.

Titled on label on the reverse “Poplars” and “Published by Eyrie and Spottiswoode, Ltd., His Majesty’s Printers, London E.C 4”. The plate is 4 ¾” x 4 ½”. Presented in a wood frame with gilt decoration. The frame is 8 ¾” square. Appears to be in fair condition. b. An engraved illustration by Gerard Vandergucht after John Vanderbank (British, 1694 – 1739) for the book, Vida y Hechos del Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel Cervantes Saavedra, printed by William Hogarth ca. 1726 and published in 1738 by J and R Tonson under the patronage of Lord Carteret. Condition: Apparent foxing, staining. The plate is 9 ¾” x 7 ¼”, framed inside a giltwood frame and matted and it is 19 ½” x 16 ½” overall. c.
