HENRY BARRAUD (England, 1811-1874). "Amazon". Oil on canvas. Signed and titled in the lower margin. Measurements: 70.5 x 90 cm; 82.5 x 102 cm (frame). Henry Barraud portrayed animals, especially horses, with great sensitivity, giving them as much or more nobility than the aristocrats who commissioned his portraits. This is amply demonstrated in this composition, which the author titles with the name of the mythological women when, in reality, it is only a horse with velvety fur and sumptuous saddle that poses next to the stone arcades of a farm with moss on the facade, behind which there is a wooded landscape. Barraud was born in London, one of seventeen children of William Francis Barraud (1783-1833), a Customs clerk, and Sophia (née) Hull. His maternal grandfather, Thomas Hull, was a miniature painter. The family was of French Huguenot origin who had come to England at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. His older brother, William Barraud, became a noted animal painter. Like his brother, Henry excelled in animal painting, but his works were mainly portraits, with horses and dogs, and thematic paintings, such as "The Pope Blessing the Animals" (painted in 1842), many of which were executed jointly with his brother. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1833 to 1859, and at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists between 1831 and 1868. The two brothers shared a studio from 1835 until William's death in 1850, and in their joint paintings William painted the animals and Henry the figures. They also produced a book entitled "Sketches of Figures and Animals", (H. Graves and Co., c.1850). Barraud's most popular works were "We Praise Thee, O God"; "London Station, a Scene in Hyde Park"; "The Cricket Ground at Lord's"; and "The Lobby of the House of Commons" (painted in 1872), all of which were engraved or self-painted. He was also commissioned for several royal portraits. His son Francis Barraud (1856-1924) was also an artist, best remembered for his painting of the dog "Nipper" on the "His Master's Voice" record label.

BARRAUD, Henry (1811 - 1874). A Gentleman Mounted on a Chestnut Hunter. Oil on canvas. 27 1/2 x 35 1/2 inches. Henry Barraud was born into an unusually talented family whose accomplishments included medicine, horology, photography and painting. Henry was the younger brother of the artist William Barraud and came from a family of seventeen children. Barraud distinguished himself as a portraitist and a sporting artist in the mid 19th century. He received his training from the portrait and topographical painter, J.J. Middleton and shared a studio in London with William from 1835 until William's death in 1850. Henry exhibited seventeen pictures at the Royal Academy and a further fifteen on which he had worked with William. They produced a book together entitled Sketches of Figures and Animals, published by H. Graves in 1850 and the Old Sporting Magazine published seven prints of Henry's works. As for Henry's independent work, it is extremely varied, painting everything from daily life, large group portraits, to romantic scenes. Henry had followed his older brother to a brief clerkship at the Customs House, after which he too sought formal art training in portraiture. Outliving his brother by more than 20 years, he continued to paint sporting subjects. Fox-hunting developed into a national sport during the first half of the 19th century in England and the demand for paintings of the subject rose dramatically. Sporting paintings by both of the Barraud brothers, together and individually, were also engraved, and many appeared as illustrations in the sporting magazines. In 1842 he married Anna Maria; they had nine children, one of whom went on to establish a photographic firm. In 1874 Henry Barraud died in his home in London of kidney disease.

Together with the coloured print which is the inscribed template to the above painting, also in a gilt frame, 6½ x 15'', both with the labels of Frost & Reed Ltd, Fine Art Dealers, London. Barraud studied art under J.J. Middleton (the portrait and topographical painter). Henry was the younger brother of William Barraud with whom he often collaborated on sporting pictures. The two brothers shared a studio from 1835 until William's death in 1850, and in their joint pictures it has been suggested that William painted the animals and Henry the figures. Henry exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1833 to 1859, and at the British Institution and Society of British Artists between the years 1831 and 1868. He painted many portraits by request of Royalty, such as: ''The Royal Highness Edward and Alexander, The Prince and Princess of Whales'' and ''Queen Victoria at a meet of Prince Albert's Harriers in Windsor Great Park''. The brothers also produced a book entitled ''Sketches of Figures and Animals'', (H. Graves and Co., c.1850). Both the Prince of Wales and the future king Edward VII attended the races in Punchestown in this year, leading Queen Victoria (mother of the Prince of Wales) to lament 'I much regret that the occasion should be the races as it naturally strengthens the belief, already too prevalent, that your chief object is amusement.' The accompanying print names the winners of the various races in 1868, from left to right: The Celt; Lysander; The Cardinal; Juryman; Excelsior; Hard held; Haynestown Lass; Olympia; Caustic.
