This Old Woodblock Print is signed in-print "CWB", with a red seal lower left, and "Kobe 1916" in-print as well. There is mat burn along the margins, and slight possible water damage in the upper left hand corner (or it could be more mat burn - it is hard to tell, and the damage is minimal). Otherwise, the print looks to be in good vintage condition. There is a yellowish tone to the paper in general. The mat has a small water stain in the extreme lower left hand corner. It is unknown whether that small stain has affected the print or not, but it is far away from the image area. The image size measures 14" x 9". The vintage green-painted frame has a few paint flakes missing from it, otherwise it is in good condition. The frame measures 21 1/4" x 15 1/2". In-House Shipping is Available. CHARLES BARTLETT "ENTRANCE TO THE GOLDEN TEMPLE, AMRITSAR" WOODBLOCK

Charles William Bartlett (1860 - 1940) "Entrance to the Golden Temple, Amritsar" Woodblock Print. The Golden Temple, or Harmandir Sahib (Abode of God), is a gurdwarda (gathering place) is located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. In this scene, Bartlett depicts a portion of the entrance to the temple, lit brightly by the sun and viewed from the afternoon shade. A corner of the sacred pool, called an amritsar (nectar pool), believed by the Sikhs to have restorative powers, is seen within the bounds of the courtyard. Pilgrims stroll along the path which circles the pool before entering the sacrum. The branches of a jujube tree stretch across the path, providing a peaceful resting place. Charles William Bartlett began his education with the intention of becoming a chemist, but switched to fine art, enrolling at the Academy of Art in London at the age of twenty-three. From there he went to Paris to further his studies at the Academie Julian. He became a co-founder of the Honolulu Printmakers and a prominent member of Hawaii's artistic community until his death on April 6, 1940 at the age of eighty. § Charles Bartlett, RCA (British, 1921-2014) Stones signed lower right "Charles Bartlett", numbered 10/40 and with Gorner and Millard blindstamp etching with aquatint h:57 w:77 cm Provenance: Gorner and Millard, 58 Kenway Road, Earls Court, London, SW5 Charles Bartlett was a highly regarded painter and printmaker. Born in Grimsby, as a child he lived in Eastbourne, later attending Eastbourne School of Art. As an outstanding student, he gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he trained as a painter and etcher following his time in the Guards Armoured Division during the Second World War. From 1960-1970 he taught printmaking at Harrow School of Art. His works - both prints and watercolour paintings - are held in many public collections.
