    William Thompson Bartoll (American, Marblehead, (1817-1859). Portrait of Robert Treat Paine, Jr. (1835-1910) as a Child , Circa 1843. Oil on canvas, the little boy depicted half-length, holding a book, (23.125 x 20 inches). Frame: H: 28.625 in., W: 25.25 in., D: 2.625 in. Thomas Treat Paine, who legally changed his name to Robert Treat Paine, Jr., was the great-grandson of the patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was a lawyer, philanthropist and internationally known peace activist. A social reformer, Paine was strongly committed to helping Boston's poor population; in particular he was responsible for the improvement of ventilation and sanitation in a tenement house known as the "Crystal Palace." He was head of the Workingman's Building Association and supervised the construction of more than 200 affordable small houses in the South, End, Roxbury and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods of Boston. He provided fellowships for the study of society's ethical issues and the problems of the poor, the construction of Trinity Church in Boston, the Children's Aid Society, the Congress of Workingman's Clubs, and he was President of the American Peace Society until his death in 1910. He and his wife, Lydia Lyman, commissioned Henry Hobson Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted to design a house and country estate in Waltham, known as Stonehurst, which was completed in 1886.

    William Thompson Bartoll (1817-1859) 1843 The pair of portraits, each signed and dated 1843 lower left front, depict a husband and wife, each seated in a facing pose. The woman is depicted in an upholstered rocking chair with detailed wood arms. She wears a lace bonnet and mourning brooch at her neck. Her black dress with lace collar is wrapped by a skillfully depicted black satin shawl. She holds a red book in her hand and has what appears to be an ear trumpet at her waist. The man is depicted in a mahogany arm chair wearing a high collar and waistcoat. Each painting is displayed int he original matching lemon gilt gold frame. Each canvas measures 25.75 x 30 with a framed size of 37.5 x 33 inches.     Attributed to William Thompson Bartoll (Marblehead, Massachusetts, 1817-1859) Portrait of a Child Wearing a Blue Dress, Holding a Tinware Toy Pump. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, reportedly depicting Elizabeth Snow of Marblehead, Massachusetts, c. 1840, 44 3/4 x 37 3/4 in., in a period molded giltwood frame; accompanied by a transfer-decorated, red-painted, toy tinware pump. Condition: Relined, very minor retouch. Note: William Thompson Bartoll was a portrait and mural painter residing in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum between 1841 and 1855. The portrait is also accompanied by a letter of correspondence from a previous owner of the portrait to the director of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection in Williamsburg, Virginia. She is inquiring as to the value of her portrait which she states is: "of a little girl, Elizabeth Snow of Marblehead. She is wearing a blue dress with white eyelet trimming white pantalets, black shoes- and is holding a red toy pump...I have had several inquiries about this portrait-including 3 well-known Boston galleries and a New York one, but my problem is no one wishes to make an offer, but want me to set a price."

    WILLIAM THOMPSON BARTOLL (American 1817-1859) Portrait Mary Farra, age 19 months , 1838 Oil on panel 20 x 17-1/2 inches (50.8 x 44.5 cm) Signed lower left: W.T. BARTOLL Inscribed lower right: Aged 19 months/1838 Mary Farra, the subject of this portrait, was the daughter of Lt. Farra of the Frigate Essex, War of 1812. An old label on verso indicates the painting was produced in Marblehead, Massachusetts. According to this label the painting came from a private family in Marblehead who were descendants of Mary B. Farra, the sitter. Bartoll produced another nearly identical portrait of Mary Ferra, although unlike the present work it was unsigned. It sold through Sotheby's, New York on January 27, 1990 for $26,400. William Thompson Bartoll was the son of John and Rebecca Bartoll and was baptized in Marblehead, Massachusetts on June 22, 1817. He married Sally L. Selman in April of 1835. Bartoll, like his father, uncle and brother, was a house painter, as well as a portraitist and mural painter. He is known to have exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum between 1841 and 1855 and he died in 1859 in Marblehead. (For further information see George C. Croce and David H.
