    Est: €400,000 - €450,000

Monogrammed and dated '20.III.86 GB'. Signed, dated and titled '06.III.86 + 20.III.86 G.Baselitz 'Borcke'' verso on canvas and with directional information. “I have never painted representationally in the traditional sense, that is, in the illustrative sense. Even if objects can be seen in my pictures, they characterise rather a picture type: the still life, the nude, the figure painting, the landscape. I have used traditional types of pictures, but in a completely new way. There are two types of pictures: one that is only concerned with painting, and the other that is concerned with the content, with the meaning. I have chosen the type that is concerned with painting itself. If I wanted to keep the object, that is, not to undermine the objective method, I had to turn it over. That is at least one possibility.” (Georg Baselitz, in: Erika Rödiger-Diruf (ed.), Georg Baselitz, Schöne und häßliche Portraits, exhib.cat. Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe et al., Karlsruhe 1993, p.107) “Baselitz does have the perfection of aesthetic paradigms in his sights, but pursues the idea of finding new pictorial possibilities through a creative and experimental operating approach, and, on that basis, to advance to results that demonstratively put traditional standards out of service. He searches for a difference and uniqueness without superficial effects and expects his paintings to have an impact from their painterly substance, being as rich in clarity as they are concentrated in their artistic formulation, namely representing ‘inventions’: “When I make my paintings, I begin to shape things as if I were the first, the only one, as if all these models did not exist; although I, of course, know that there are thousands of examples opposing me. One must always create something valid, an end.” (Andreas Franzken, Georg Baselitz, Bruch und Erneuerung als Stilprinzip, in: Erika Rödiger-Diruf (ed.), Georg Baselitz, Schöne und häßliche Portraits, exhib.cat. Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe et al., Karlsruhe 1993, p.17/18)
