Painter, Illustrator, b. 1884 - d. 1956

(b 1884; d 1956) American Impressionist painter, Walter Emerson Baum was born in Sellersville, Pennsylvania in 1884. He spent his entire career working there, capturing scenes from the surrounding landscape during plein air painting excursions, often with his wife Flora by his side. He is best known for his landscapes, executed during the 1920s and 30s, which depict small rural houses in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Later in his career, he abandoned oil paint in favor of tempera and casein and this move corresponds to a decline in the quality of his work. Baum was a beloved teacher as well, and he helped to found the Baum School of Art and the Allentown Art Museum. Today his work is included in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as numerous other museum collections.

    Walter Emerson Baum (1884-1956) Untitled (Red Barn Shadows) Second quarter of the 20th Century. The sunlit composition with shadows cast on a red barn is signed lower right. Walter Baum was an influential American painter, educator, and arts organizer associated with American Impressionism and regional landscape painting. Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he is best known for founding the Baum School of Art and playing a central role in establishing the Allentown Art Museum. He was also an early advocate for women artists and a key organizer of the Philadelphia Ten, a progressive group of women artists at a time when support for women artists was limited. Overall it is in very good original condition. There is some slight darkening to the paint inherent to age, and several superficial scratches approximately 1” in length on the left side of the painting. Inspection under UV light does not reveal any restoration. The frame is in as-is condition. Examined outside of the frame, there is some minor bumping at the corners which are underneath from the frame. PROVENANCE Collection of the artist's wife, Flora Baum (nee Barndt) Acquired from Flora Baum in 1960 by David Baum LOT NOTES The present painting is an expansive and colorful composition by one of the most important members of the New Hope school, Walter Baum. It combines the influence of Cezanne and post-modernist abstraction, with Baum's mastery of landscape, and delicate approach to figuration. Signed "W E BAUM" lower right. Retains Baum's gallery label verso reading "Walter Emerson Baum, A. N. A. / N. Main & Green Sts., / Sellersville, Pa." which is also where the artist titles the work in pencil "Perkiomen Village" with a price of "$100"; also attached verso is a newspaper clipping announcing the artist's death in 1956. Housed in the original frame with original backing paper intact. First half 20th century. 15 1/2" x 26 1/2" sight, 20 1/2" x 31 1/2" OA.
