He studied in the Studio for Architecture and Decorative Arts under G. Schmidthammer in 1919 and at the M. May Art School in Linz in 1920; In 1920, he also worked as an assistant to E. Margold in Darmstadt. From 1921 to 1923, he studied wall painting and typography at the State Bauhaus in Weimar with W. Kandinsky. A study visit took him to Italy in 1923/24. From 1925 to 1928, Bayer worked as a teacher of typography and advertising at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he combined photography and typography to create a new type of advertising design. From 1928 to 1938 he worked as an advertising graphic artist, painter, photographer and exhibition architect in Berlin. From 1938 to 1946, Bayer was an exhibition specialist in New York. In 1946 he moved to Aspen, Colorado, as a design consultant for the Container Corporation of America. In 1975, he moved again, to Montecito, California. Bayer's painterly work is primarily determined by geometric shapes, which often contrast with organic structures. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographs 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

Born in Haag, Austria, Herbert Bayer had a 60-year career that included abstract and surrealist painting, sculpture, environmental art, industrial design, architecture, graphic design, lithography, photography and tapestry. He also did murals including for the Bauhaus Building in Weimar, the Graduate Center at Harvard University and the Health Center in Aspen, Colorado. In 1968, he designed the articulated wall construction for the Olympics in Mexico City. In addition to pursuing his own creative artistic talents, Herbert Bayer held administrative positions related to his design abilities. In Germany, he was a Director of the Bauhaus, Art Director of Vogue magazine, and Director of Dorland Studio in Berlin from 1928 to 1938. In America, Herbert Bayer was chairman of the design department for the Container Corporation, was Design Consultant for the Aspen Institute and Atlantic Richfield Company as well as for the town of Aspen,

HERBERT BAYER (1900-1985) SKI IN ASPEN COLORADO. 44½x34½ inches, 113x87½ cm. Condition B+: extensive stenciled overpainting of yellow and white background, including around text. After moving to the USA in 1938, Bayer settled in New York before moving to Aspen in 1946, when he was recruited by Albert Paepcke of the Container Corporation of America, to turn the sleepy town of Aspen into a cultural and educational resort, in addition to having a lure as a winter paradise. In 1939, Bayer had worked for Mont Tremblant, a ski resort in Canada, and clearly used this experience when making the Aspen ski posters and other advertising ephemera he designed for the city. Rare. Previously unrecorded at auction.

Buchdruck in Rot auf Papier. Um 1932. 11,5 : 16 cm. Das erste deutsche »Lifestyle«-Magazin erschien, gestaltet und beworben von den Bauhauskünstlern Herbert Bayer und Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, seit 1929. Herbert Bayer entwarf die Typographie, die Zeitschrift wurde aus der von ihm gemeinsam mit Josef Albers entwickelten »Universale« gesetzt. – Bayer arbeitete bis zu seiner Emigration 1938 für die Zeitschrift. – Der Umschlag mit Poststempel von 1942. – Tadellos erhalten. Herbert Bayer. Teutoburger Wald und Weserbergland.

Letterhead. Zweifarbiger Buch- und Klischeedruck in Rot und Schwarz. Um 1931. A4 (29,7 : 21 cm). Bislang unbekannt gebliebener Entwurf für den Verkehrsverband Teutoburger Wald, für den Herbert Bayer seit Anfang der dreißiger Jahre verschiedene Designs lieferte (vgl. Rössler, Die Berliner Jahre, Seiten 222f.) – Sowohl Verbandsname und Anschrift als auch Adress- und Textfeldumrahmung wurden jeweils in Rot und Schwarz gedruckt. – Auf leichtem »Post«-Bütten. – Als Brief verschickt am 4. Briefumschlag. Klischeedruck. 11,4 : 16,2 cm. – Warum Tapeten? Werbeblatt. Buch- und Klischeedruck. 22,5 : 14,7 cm. – Beide um 1926. Für das Tapetenhaus Rühl in Dessau sind Arbeiten in ganz ähnlicher Gestaltung von Herbert Bayer bekannt, die vorliegenden beiden Arbeiten, beide mit dem Signet der Firma, konnten wir nicht nachweisen. – Ein weiteres Beispiel für die Arbeit Bayers in seiner Dessauer Bauhauszeit für das dort ansässige Tapetenhaus Rühl findet sich in Tschicholds »Die neue Typographie« 1928, auf Seite 140. – Der Briefumschlag mit dem dazugehörigen Briefbogen mit Letterhead befindet sich in der Sammlung des MoMA.
