      • Acatène Métropole. 1895.
        Jul. 11, 2024

        Acatène Métropole. 1895.

        Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: LUCIEN BAYLAC (1851-1913) SIZE: 50 5/8 x 72 1/4 in./128.7 x 183.7 cm PRINTER: Imp. J. Kossuth, Paris DESCRIPTION: Baylac gives us a street scene from the days when women were required to wear long skirts—even on bicycles. But the voluminous fabric could easily tangle in the cycle’s chain drive. Métropole’s “Acatène” provides a solution: this chainless model allows the young lady to more easily mount the bike in her bloomers. The design features another Métropole poster by Baylac, also used to sell the chainless version. A smaller poster-within-the-poster advertises the American-made G & J tires. There’s a lot going on in this two-sheet poster, including the shocked expressions of the old chain guard, but it’s all organized with clarity and wit. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles; Posters on Posters)

      • Original Vintage Acatene Metropole Bicycle Poster by Lucien Baylac 1900
        Feb. 06, 2024

Original Vintage Acatene Metropole Bicycle Poster by Lucien Baylac 1900

        Est: $3,500 - $4,500

Cycling became very popular as it became more accessible to more of the public in the early 1900s. It became closely linked to the early women's rights movements as a symbol of their burgeoning independence. For the first time in the modern era, women could go wherever they wished, whenever they wished, completely alone. This early poster highlights this newfound freedom with Acatene Metropole chainless bicycles and American-made GandJ tires. Men (representing "Old England") leer over a wall at the jubilant independent woman who needs nothing from them. She points at another poster for the company - an actual design created by the same artist about ten years prior. Look how far her riding clothes have come in the past decade! The message here is that the Acatene Metropole company is one of modernity and independence. Lucien Baylac (1851 - 1911) was a French illustrator known mostly for his bicycle poster designs and illustrations of the L'Exposition Universelle of 1900. Unfortuantely, there is not much else known about his life. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.

So in many ways Baylac’s advertisement is somewhat guilty of preaching to the choir; however, the concept that Excelsior is the bike for the serious rider comes across with steadfast resolve. Acatene Velleda. LUCIEN BAYLAC (1851-1913) Imp. Kossuth, Paris Cond B+/Slight tears and stains at folds and edges. This proclamatory valkyrie would appear to be none other than Velleda, the Germanic priestess who was one of the leaders of the Batavian uprising against the Romans. Here, however, rather than taking on an entire empire, she lends her name to a brand of bicycle determined to crush the tyranny of chain-driven models with their chainless ride: the Acatene Metropole. Adding further melodrama to the proceedings is the background's chain-rending raptor, a bird of prey supplied with its own Latin motto that translates as "Woe to Chains." As is typically the case in posters for the Acatene Metropole bicycle, it's made perfectly clear that their product was outfitted with American-made G & J tires. Baylac worked under Jules Cheret and the Master's influence is clearly evident in his designs. Other than that fact, the artist remains a bit of an enigma, known to us solely from the posters he produced. 1898 47 1/8 x 62 1/8 in./119.6 x 157.7 cm
