Colour serigraph on wove paper. Signed and numbered. - Small crease to the lower left corner, minimal tear to the left edge of the image, with slight loss of colour there. Splendid, colour-intensive print with a fresh effect and in very good condition. - One of 100 copies. - Thomas Bayrle's graphic work, in particular, demonstrates his engagement with Pop Art and Minimal Art, but also with machine aesthetics and the theory of "serial art". Bayrle often uses the principle of repetition and variation to create complex, almost hypnotic patterns from simple graphic elements. Our sheet shows what at first glance appears to be an abstract structure consisting of a series of runners in sports shirts - a metaphor for capitalism, mass culture and standardisation.

Depiction Size: 109 x 82cm. Notation: Signed, dated and titled. Signed, dated and dedicated (verso). And numbered (in print verso on label). Number: 2/10. Provenance: - Kasper König Collection, Berlin (directly from artist) Literature: - cf. Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Nicolaus Schafhausen, Bärbel Vischer (eds.): Thomas Bayrle. Musterzeichner, Vienna 2017 Thomas Bayrle and the consumer world Thomas Bayrle's art is dominated by themes of the modern industrial society of the 20th century, such as mass production and consumption. In his art, which is close to Pop Art, he playfully explores these themes. The son of an art historian with a doctorate and a painter and graphic artist, he trained as a pattern draughtsman and weaver from 1956. From 1958-1961, Bayrle studied commercial art at the Werkkunstschule Offenbach. These experiences shaped his two-dimensional works. A recurring motif in his oeuvre is the dualism of the masses and the individual. In his parents' home, these themes were already posed in terms of "Asian existential questions". Potatoes for everyone or the " Kartoffelzähler" (potato counters) Thomas Bayrle discovers the motif of men counting potatoes in this serigraph in the translated Chinese propaganda magazine "China heute". This publication deals with the ideas of the political current of Maoism and addresses, among other things, the question of the possibility of securing food for a constantly growing population. In this discourse, the potato plant is discussed as a possible proposal. The work shows three different potato counters in the background, which are repeated in an endless pattern across the entire sheet. While two of the men sit parallel to the edge of the picture along the side of the table covered by mountains of potatoes, the third man wearing glasses sits opposite them on the transverse side. Sketchily depicted with only their upper bodies, the three men hold red books, "Mao Bibles", in their hands and have their heads turned towards them. In the foreground, a potato plant with green leaves and brown tubers is placed on top of the repeating ornamentation. Heaven and earth Thomas Bayrle's work has an additional division through the coloring of the potatoes. While brown tones dominate in the lower half of the picture, the potatoes in the upper half are depicted in sky blue. The color change on the horizontal line also marks the point at which the leaves of the plant emerge from the soil. The mechanical principle of "creating art for everyone" in the reproducibility given by printmaking can also be equated here with "nutrition for everyone" as the central theme of the work. This edition object was also presented in the solo exhibitions "40 Jahre Chinese Rock'n Roll" at the MMK in Frankfurt a.M. (2002) and "Wenn es zu lang ist - mach es länger" at the MAK in Vienna (2017-2018). Estimated shipping costs for this lot: Arrangement after the auction. Thomas Bayrle: Feuer im Weizen

          Est: €15,000 - €20,000

BAYRLE, THOMAS 1937 Berlin Title: Feuer im Weizen. Subtitle: Series of 8 silkscreens. Date: 1970/71. Technique: Each: Colour silkscreen on vellum. Additionally title page. Depiction Size: Each: 47,5 x 64,5cm. Notation: Signed, dated, titled and numbered. Publisher: Draier-Verlag, Frankfurt a.M. (publisher). Number: 62/100. Frame: Framed. Not examined out of the frame. Provenance: - Kasper König Collection, Berlin (directly from artist) Thomas Bayrle is a German artist who has become known for his work in the fields of graphic design, painting and sculpture. His work is characterized by his examination of mass production and consumer culture. This is certainly also due to his training as a graphic designer. Bayrle is known for his serial works, which create complex patterns and structures from simple, repetitive motifs. His chosen subjects are a reflection of political systems and the relationship between the individual and society. The masses as a living ornament After completing his training, Bayrle founded Gulliver Presse together with Bernhard Jäger and published numerous artist's books. Influenced by the serial works of Pop Art, he created his so-called "Superforms" in the 1960s. He assembled individual motifs taken from the advertising industry and popular culture into large-format pictures. These collages reflect the fusion of the masses into a "living ornament" in which the individual is absorbed as part of a larger whole. Feuer im Weizen In the context of sexual liberation and political resistance, Bayrle published "Feuer im Weizen" (Fire in the Wheat) in 1970 with the Frankfurt-based März-Verlag. The work plays with bourgeois conventions and presents itself in the design of a picture book with glossy cardboard pages. The raster images printed in bold colors show provocative scenes whose endless repetitions form a mass ornament of sexual acts. These pop-like illustrations emphasize the erotic impact of the images and illustrate Bayrle's critical view of social norms. Complex patterns and structures The present work shows such a grid of alternating rows of men and women with a red flag that provides information about the work. The completely undressed men and the women, dressed only in black fishnet stockings and heels, are painted in red and blue. Bayrle shows them in motion, each with one leg bent and one arm stretched up in the air. One behind the other, they appear to be dancing in rows. The seemingly endless repetitions of the same motifs create a complex, unique pattern typical of Bayrle's work, the individual becomes part of the mass as a living ornament. In 2008-2009 it was exhibited at his solo exhibition "Looping" at the Museum Ludwig under the direction of Kasper König. Estimated shipping costs for this lot: Arrangement after the auction. BAYRLE, THOMAS 1937 Berlin Title: Untitled (Glückskleedosenturm). Date: 1969. Technique: 40 milk cans, mounted on top of each other. Measurement: 179,5 x Ø5cm. Provenance: - Kasper König Collection, Berlin (directly from artist) Exhibitions: - König Galerie, Berlin 2019 German Pop Art In the art of the 1960s, American Pop Art artists turned to the aesthetics of consumer goods and translated them into painting and sculpture. Andy Warhol in particular took up the serial production of goods and used them for his Campbell can series. According to Thomas Bayrle, he refers to Warhol and implements this principle in an oversized way, whereby he does not use the famous American soup brand as his subject, but the condensed milk of the manufacturer Glücksklee. The logo with a green four-leaf clover is characteristic of the brand, which also offers its product in cans. History of creation Thomas Bayrle explains in an interview how the creative collaboration with Glücksklee came about: "The advertising agency Thompson asked me in '69 if I wanted to do something for Glücksklee. Then I made them a graphic: lucky clover tins made from lucky clover tins, of which there were eight prints. And then I said to myself: "I'd like to have them in plastic." Simply for me as a work. Again, that had nothing to do with Warhol, I simply took the graphic as an opportunity to make a sculpture. It was the big milk can, dark red, which hasn't been around for a long time." (translated) The work from the König Collection consists of 20 white and 20 red cans of the Glücksklee brand, which are stacked on top of each other to form a narrow tower of cans. The composition takes up the company's traditional two-tone label, while forty clover leaves run repeatedly from top to bottom. A monumental work consisting of 4,200 cans, which together form the Glückskleleemark logo, is now in the Städel collection in Frankfurt am Main. König and Bayrle Kasper König acquired his first work by Bayrle in 1970 and selected the artist for the exhibition "Von hier aus" in Düsseldorf in 1984. The two worked together at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and, parallel to his work as a professor, solo exhibitions followed at Portikus in 1990 and 1995, where his wife, the artist Helke Bayrle, documented the installation of numerous exhibitions on film from 1992 to 2022. König exhibited the artist in a solo show at Museum Ludwig in 2009 and included Bayrle in 2012 in the presentation "Ein Wunsch bleibt immer übrig. Kasper König zieht Bilanz". (born in Berlin in 1937) Norman Mailer, 1971, signed, dated Bayrle 71, again signed, dated on the reverse, acrylic on canvas, 100 x 76 cm, framed We are grateful to Thomas Bayrle for confirming the authenticity of the work. Provenance: Galerie Ute Parduhn, Düsseldorf Private Collection Berlin - acquired from the above Bringing together, repeating, networking. These keywords capture Thomas Bayrle‘s work briefly and succinctly. Bayrle elevates the continuous pattern repeat to a stylistic principle. He mostly uses everyday motifs in his works, and avoids making ideological distinctions, whether political or religious. His works are undoubtedly inspired by Pop Art and Neo-Dadaism. He laid the foundation of his trademark - serial repetition in grid structures - as a teenager during his two-year training as a weaver. Bayrle originally aspired to be a textile engineer, which is entirely in keeping with his inclination towards the consistent principle of the serial and the grid. He sees the world as a surface held together like a fabric by threads. He developed his „superforms“ from the late 1960s onwards by internalising the language of looms, keeping the textile ornament, the ornament of the masses, front of mind. He creates a new overarching form from many small individual parts of the same motif. As he says, he thematises the relationship „from the individual to the mass“, and thus criticises the mass production of contemporary capitalist society. These themes of mass consumption and mass production determine his oeuvre, and create the pictorial form that becomes characteristic of his art. He creates the likeness of the American writer, journalist and director Norman Kingsley Mailer from the sequence of a single motif - the pencil. The portrait „hides“ behind the pencils. Only at a certain distance from the picture does the viewer discover the writer’s portrait. A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Mailer‘s writings dealt with themes of violent tendencies and sexual neuroses, and he was considered a sharp critic of US society. The classic writer’s tool becomes Bayrle‘s instrument and, through the stylistic devices of juxtaposition, distortion, colouring and curvature, is transformed into the new overarching structure of Mailer‘s portrait. „I wanted to become a pattern draughtsman and learn how to punch cards in order to be able to ‚programme‘ patterns. [...] It seemed fantastic to me to be able to use geometric thread elements to build individually point by point, line by line.“ Thomas Bayrle, 1995, in an interview with Kunstforum magazine
