Thomas Bayrle wurde als Sohn einer Künstlerfamilie geboren. Nach einer zweijährigen Lehre als Musterzeichner und Weber in Göppingen (1956 - 1958) prägte ihn das stetige Klappern der Jacquard-Webstühle - die serielle Mechanik wurde später zum Leitmotiv seines Œuvres. Von 1958 bis 1961 studierte er an der Werkkunstschule in Offenbach, wo er sich intensiv mit Lithografie und Radierung befasste. Noch während dieser Zeit gründete er 1961 gemeinsam mit Bernhard Jäger die „Gulliver-Presse“, einen Verlag für Künstlerbücher, der schnell internationale Beachtung fand. Seine frühen Arbeiten wurden bereits 1964 auf der documenta 3 präsentiert; weitere Teilnahmen folgten 1977 (documenta 6) und 2012 (dOCUMENTA 13), wo er mit dem Arnold-Bode-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde. Parallel dazu lehrte Bayrle von 1972/75 bis 2002 als Professor an der Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main und prägte Generationen junger Künstlerinnen und Künstler. Bayrle gilt als Pionier der deutschen Pop-Art und einer der ersten, die computergenerierte Animationen in der bildenden Kunst einsetzten. Seine charakteristische „Superform“ - Großbilder aus unzähligen, wiederholten Einzelelementen - thematisiert Konsum, Massengesellschaft und digitale Vernetzung. Für sein Gesamtwerk erhielt er u. a. den Hessischen Kulturpreis (1998) und die Goethe-Plakette der Stadt Frankfurt (2007). Internationale Einzelausstellungen führten ihn u. a. ins Kunstmuseum Frankfurt, ins Museum of Modern Art in New York und 2018 mit der Retrospektive Playtime ins New Museum, New York. Bayrle lebt und arbeitet weiterhin in Frankfurt am Main. Thomas Bayrle greift in seinem Werk häufig auf das Prinzip der Stereogramme zurück, wobei er den dreidimensionalen Effekt bereits in der Bildstruktur vorwegnimmt, sodass der Betrachter ihn unmittelbar erfassen kann. Durch die systematische Wiederholung von Mustern und Ornamenten formt er dreidimensionale Objekte, die eine bemerkenswerte Lebendigkeit und Dynamik ausstrahlen. Die 1978 entstandene Zeichnung „Bolongaro-Palast in Höchst“ präsentiert sich als präzise ausgeführte Arbeit in Bleistift und Buntstift auf einem isometrischen Raster. Aus einer leichten Vogelperspektive entfaltet sich der barocke Gebäudekomplex des Bolongaropalasts als dynamisch konzipierte, z-förmige Anlage. Die Fassaden sind durch fein geführte Schraffuren sowie punktuelle Rosé-Nuancen plastisch modelliert und verleihen dem Ensemble eine räumliche Tiefe. In der oberen Malschicht über der architektonischen Darstellung befindet sich der Schriftzug ‚BOLONGARO PALAST‘, dessen kantige Lettern aus dicht gebündelten Linienclustern bestehen und die serielle Handschrift des Künstlers eindrucksvoll zur Geltung bringen. Interessanterweise tritt in diesem Werk nicht die Architektur als Hauptmotiv hervor, sondern der darüberliegende Schriftzug. Die Buchstaben scheinen wie eine schimmernde Oberfläche über das Blatt zu gleiten. Sie wirken voluminös und balancieren durch den variierenden Bleistiftduktus in einem subtilen Ein- und Aus-Effekt. Die leere Fläche im unteren Bereich der Darstellung lässt den Betrachter an einen weiteren, im Moment der Betrachtung erloschenen Schriftzug denken.

Unser Blatt zeigt eine auf den ersten Blick abstrakt wirkende Struktur, die aus der Aneinanderreihung von Läufern in Sporttrikots besteht - eine Metapher auf Kapitalismus, Massenkultur und Standardisierung.
