Biography

Aubrey Beardsley was an English illustrator and caricaturist of the 1890s Aesthetic movement. Inspired by the curvilinear style of Art Nouveau and Japanese woodcut design elements, Beardsley began drawing as a child and attended the Westminster School of Art. It was during this time that he shared his work with the esteemed artist Edward Burne-Jones, who served as a mentor and inspiration to Beardsley.

Throughout the 1890s, he illustrated work for Thomas Malory and Oscar Wilde and served as an illustrator and art editor for The Yellow Book, a quarterly London art magazine. His illustrations centered on beauty, sensuality and morbid eroticism, emphasizing his fascination with grotesque and taboo topics.

Between his controversial art and affiliation with Wilde, Beardsley was dismissed from The Yellow Book. In 1896, he created a rival periodical, The Savoy, with London publisher Leonard Smithers and fellow artist Arthur Symons. Additionally, he illustrated several more books and penned a few poems before his death from tuberculosis in 1898.

Today, his work is displayed in the Tate Gallery and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Date: 19th century Description: A small, rectangular black field stands in the centre of large, light-coloured paper. Spatial depth is largely absent; composition and symbolism are based on silhouette, symbolism and nocturnal atmosphere. Wilde, Oscar und Beardsley, Aubrey: Salomé. Illustr. A. Beardsley

Beardsley, Aubrey. - Wilde, Oscar. Salomé. A tragedy in one act: translated from the French of Oscar Wilde. 75 S. Mit 16 ganzseitigen Illustrationen von Aubrey Beardsley. Hellblauer OLeinenband (etwas berieben) mit goldgeprägtem RTitel. London, Melmoth, 1904. Eines von 250 nummerierten Exemplaren der Ausgabe "on hand-made paper" (Gesamtauflage: 300). "Wilde accompanied his publication of Salome with a set of illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. The highly grotesque black and white drawings, complete with both transparent and ambiguous sexual references, form an erotic visualization of Wilde’s vision of Salome. In her book Sexual Anarchy: Gender and Culture at the fin de siècle, Elaine Showalter meticulously describes some of Beardsley’s drawings and calls attention to the fact that the illustrations have often been misinterpreted as conflicting with the text of the play. She writes that on the contrary, they 'bring out all too powerfully the secret or unspeakable subtext of the play, especially its homoerotic and blasphemous elements' (Showalter 152). Wilde was certainly aware of Beardsley’s correct interpretation and depiction of his Salome seeing that he wrote in the edition he presented to his friend, 'For the only artist who, besides myself, knows what the dance of the seven veils is and can see that invisible dance' (Showalter 152)" (zit. nach Tania Albin). – Nur Textblätter stellenweise leicht gebräunt, das unbeschnittene Exemplar von schöner Gesamterhaltung.

BEARDSLEY, Aubrey Vincent (Illustrator 1872-1898) - Thomas MALORY (fl. 1470) - Le Morte Darthur. The Birth Life and Acts of King Arthur of his Noble Knights of the Round Table. London: J.M. Dent & Co, 1893-94. A copy preserved in its editorial cloth binding decorated in gold. One of 1500 from the edition of 1800. This is the first of Beardsley's great masterpieces, produced when he was only 20 years old. The young artist met the publisher Dent when he was looking for someone to illustrate an edition of Morte d'Arthur. Seeing the proof drawing of 'The Achieving of the Sangreal', the publisher was blown away by the quality and set the young man to work on publishing the volumes. The result was this splendid work which derives from the medievalism of the Pre-Raphaelites, mixed together with his bizarre imagination and style influenced by Japanese art. The illustrations are among the most stunning Beardsley has ever produced. 2 volumes, 4to (240 x 195mm). Half-titles, photogravure frontispieces, 18 plates of which some double-page, elegant illustrations and decorations by Beardsley (browning and foxing). Elegant gilt publisher's cloth, upper edge gilt and the others uncut (browned and soiled, light wear). (2) IT BEARDSLEY, Aubrey Vincent (Illustrator 1872-1898) - Thomas MALORY (fl. 1470) - Le Morte Darthur. The Birth Life and Acts of King Arthur of his Noble Knights of the Round Table. Londra: J.M. Dent & Co, 1893-94. Copia preservata in legatura editoriale stampata in oro. (2)

Beardsley (Aubrey).- Wilde (Oscar) Salome: A Tragedy in One Act, one of 500 copies, 1894

    Est: £800 - £1,200

Beardsley (Aubrey).- Wilde (Oscar) Salome: A Tragedy in One Act, one of 500 copies, title and list of plates with pictorial borders, 10 plates (one becoming loose) and tail-piece by Aubrey Beardsley, 16pp. publisher's catalogue dated 'January 1894' at end, previous owner's ink signature, original cloth, rebacked retaining original backstrip, gilt, sunning to edges, [Mason 350; Ray 315A], small 4to, 1894.   ⁂ Wilde commissioned Beardsley to illustrate Salome but was shocked by the results, feeling that the images overpowered his text. Consequently one plate was replaced and another two altered. Beardsley mocked Wilde in his illustrations, depicting him as the 'Woman in the Moon' and as a jester in 'Enter Herodias'.

  • Aubrey Beardsley, The Yellow Book vintage poster

Aubrey Beardsley, The Yellow Book vintage poster

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Aubrey Beardsley The Yellow Book vintage poster 1894 25.75 h × 9 w in (65 × 23 cm) Originally used to advertise a line of children's books, here Beardsley's design announces the January 1895 issue of The Yellow Book. Brian Reade notes: "Such winged chairs were known as grandfather's chairs, and Beardsley may have intended to represent a grandmother sitting in an appropriate chair and reading to her grandchildren from one of the books... The gown with its leg-of-mutton sleeves is of the Nineties, but the feather is in the mode of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Instead of age and maturity therefore Beardsley has formulated a disturbing sensuality in the features of the woman. This was the kind of negligent irony which repelled so many of his own generation" (Beardsley, p. 343). During his short life, Beardsley's principal works were black-and-white illustrations, primarily for books and magazines. Additionally, he created several posters of great artistic merit. Geo. H. Walker, Boston Literature: DFP-I, 9 (var); Beardsley, 335 (var); PAI-XCII, 132 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.
