This pair of prints by Erwin Bechtold is characterized by extreme formal simplicity: a large, slightly veiled empty field is delineated by a dark, irregular frame, almost like a boundary between the surface and space. The image is reduced to the essential, yet it does not feel cold; the slight variations in the line, the shaded areas, and the small irregularities at the edges introduce a subtle tension, as if the geometric form were subject to an organic disturbance. The restraint of the approach, the precision of the brushwork, and the silent intensity of the composition reflect Bechtold’s significance within postwar European abstraction. Erwin Bechtold was a German artist based in Ibiza, where he co-founded the Ibiza 59 Group. After an early period associated with Informalism, he evolved toward an increasingly essential and constructive form of abstraction. He participated in the 1968 Documenta in Kassel, and his work is represented in institutions such as the Reina Sofía Museum, the MACBA, the Joan Miró Foundation, the IVAM, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, and the Tate Collection.

In 1962, Bechtold was elected member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund; in 1983, of the Akademie der Künste in Mannheim and, in 1990, he was awarded the honorary title of Professor of the Land Baden-Württemberg. In Ibiza he has been awarded the Premi Illes Pitiuses (2005) and the Premi Ramon Llull de las Illes Balears (2006). In 2005, the Barcelona Gallery dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him on the occasion of his eightieth anniversary, and three years later a monographic exhibition dedicated to his work was held at the Centro de Arte y Naturaleza in Huesca. This work of 1962 is placed squarely in the informalist stage of Erwin Bechtold, characterized by the expressiveness of matter, the graphic trace and the tension between sign, gesture and surface. The composition combines stains, nervous lines, numbers and typographic fragments, creating an image of fragmentary and dynamic appearance, close to visual collage and graphic experimentation. The work is particularly interesting within his early production, prior to the consolidation of his geometric language. It shows the influence of his training as a typographer and graphic designer, visible in the use of letters, figures and printed superimpositions, which dialogue with manual strokes of great freedom. Erwin Bechtold develops here a composition of great material-gestural intensity, dominated by an almost monochromatic range of whites, blacks and grays. On a surface of dense and eroded texture, the artist introduces nervous black strokes and calligraphic-like signs that burst around a central dark nucleus, generating a strong visual tension. The piece belongs to Bechtold's informalist stage, prior to the consolidation of his later geometric language. The incisions, glazes and superimpositions reinforce the sensation of depth, while the contrast between the white background and the black center provides a powerful expressive charge.     ERWIN BECHTOLD (Cologne, Germany, 1925-2022). "Seated Woman, 1953. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Size: 27 x 21 cm; 47 x 40,5 cm (frame). The work on auction corresponds to the painter's early period, when he had not yet moved into full abstraction. A German painter based in Ibiza, Bechtold made his individual debut in 1950. He took part in the first Salón de Mayo in Barcelona in 1957, was associated with the groups Dau al Set and El Paso, and belonged to SYN. He has exhibited regularly in Barcelona since 1960. In 1962, Bechtold was elected a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund; in 1983, of the Akademie der Künste in Mannheim and, in 1990, he was awarded the honorary title of Professor of the Land Baden-Württemberg. In Ibiza he was awarded the Premi Illes Pitiuses (2005) and the Premi Ramon Llull de las Illes Balears (2006). In 2005, the Barcelona Gallery dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him on the occasion of its eightieth anniversary, and three years later a monographic exhibition of his work was held at the Centro de Arte y Naturaleza in Huesca. He is represented at the Tate Gallery in London, the MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York and the Reina Sofía in Madrid, among other centres and institutions around the world.
