Jacob Samuel Beck: Portrait of Heinrich Rudolf Boutin (1749-1822) as "The Little Red Hussar"

    Est: €12,000 - €20,000

BECK, JACOB SAMUEL Erfurt 1715 - 1778 Title: Portrait of Heinrich Rudolf Boutin (1749-1822) as "The Little Red Hussar". Date: Ca. 1759. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 105 x 81cm. Frame: Framed. Verso: On the canvas adhesive label with information on the depicted. Literature: Th.v. Taschitzki: Jacob Samuel Beck und sein vielseitiges Werk - Detailstudien und Spurensuche. In: exhib. cat. "Jacob Samuel Beck (1715-1778): zum 300. Geburtstag des Erfurter Malers". Angermuseum Erfurt 18th October 2015 - 17th January 2016, ill. 58. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; Private ownership, France, until 2024. Von Taschitzki writes about this painting, which at the time was only known as a photograph: "Around 16-18 years earlier, a portrait of a child of the same Boutin son was probably created, which shows typical features of Beck's portrait painting. This portrait, which is the only known bourgeois portrait of a child by Beck so far, is only documented in a black-and-white photograph. Johannes Nikolaus Boutin, who can probably be considered the most important Beck collector among the wealthy citizens of Erfurt, commissioned the Erfurt painter to paint a portrait of his 8-10-year-old son Heinrich Rudolph, probably between 1757 and 1759. The boy was depicted in the child's costume of a "red hussar", with Beck repeating familiar patterns of his portrait painting in this portrait of a child, e. g. the cut console table, the left hand resting on the removed hussar's cap and the downward gesture of the right hand." Estimated shipping costs for this lot: Arrangement after the auction. Explanations to the Catalogue Jacob Samuel Beck Germany German School 18th C. Jakob Samuel Beck, Vegetable Still Life with a Rabbit Vegetable Still Life with a Guinea Pig

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

These two exceptional counterparts have been in private ownership for many years. They were made known to a wider audience as an important new discovery in 2015/16 on the occasion of the exhibition in Erfurt celebrating the 300th birthday of the Erfurt painter Jacob Samuel Beck. Typical of Beck's still lifes is the precise, quasi-scientific view of nature's world of forms and colours. Beck chose to paint particularly elongated pictures that offer as much space as possible for the presentation of various cruciferous vegetables and artichokes, which spread out as opulent leafy landscapes. On them is an unusual variety of insects, painted true to life. There are two fireflies (in front of the kohlrabi), two butterflies, a small tortoiseshell and a six-spot burnet, a common birch beetle (in front of the asparagus) and a cockchafer, among others. The muted colour palette with silvery-grey green tones, the contrasting light and also the unusual variety of insects distinguish the two pendants from other still lifes by Beck and make them stand out. In his catalogue entry on Beck's still lifes and animal paintings, Gero Seling points out that, unlike the works of the Dutch still life painters of the 17th century, it makes relatively little sense to try to analyse the symbolic component of Beck's works (p. 57f). He refers to the variety of the vegetables depicted, the economic importance of professional horticulture in Erfurt in the 18th century and praises its benefits. Erfurt, which had no princely court of its own and was instead ruled from the distant city of Mainz, lived from vegetable growing. In its fertile soil growers were able to cultivate even artichokes and cauliflowers, as shown here.

    Jacob Samuel Beck

    Est: €3,300 - €6,600

Rahmen. Attributed to Jacob Samuel Beck (1715 - 1778). Oil on canvas.

Jakob Samuel Beck – Landschaft mit Kaninchenfamilie um einen Kohlkopf

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Öl auf Leinwand, doubliert. (Um 1760/1770). 56 x 66 cm. Gerahmt. Literatur: Ausst.-Kat.
