The young queen was Maximilian's wife Mary of Burgundy, through whom Brabant came under Hapsburg rule. Woodcut made by Leonhard Beck ca. 1514-1516. Die fünf präzise geschnittenen und von Bartsch ehemals Hans Burgkmaier zugeschrieben Blätter zählen zu der insgesamt 123 Darstellungen umfassenden Folge "Die Heiligen aus der 'Sipp-, Mag- und Schwägerschaft' des Kaisers Maximilian I.", die von verschiedenen Holzschneidern aus der Werkstatt Jost de Negkers zwischen 1516 und 1518 in Augsburg ausgeführt wurde. Unsere Exemplare stammen wohl aus der späten vierten Auflage, die von S. Laschnitzer zwischen 1886-1887 herausgegeben wurde. Ganz ausgezeichnete, klare und kräftige Drucke verso teils mit schönem Druckrelief, mit feinem Rändchen, H. 10 mit schmalem Rand um die Einfassung. Minimal angestaubt, vereinzelt etwas fleckig, sonst sehr schön erhalten. Allesamt aus der Sammlung des Kunsthändlers Franz Meyer, Dresden (verso mit dessen handschriftl. Vermerk) sowie der Sammlung Erhard Kaps (Lugt 3549), H. 63 aus der Sammlung Friedrich II. August von Sachsen (Lugt 971), H. 10, 63 aus der Sammlung Scharfen (Lugt 3951), H. 46, 101 aus der Sammlung Sibyll Kaps (Lugt 3574), H. 73 aus der Sammlung Ines Kamps (Lugt 3551). Insgesamt in sehr guter Erhaltung. - Von grosser Seltenheit. Die Holzschnitte des hl. Firminius und der hl. Pharahildis zählen zu der insgesamt 123 Darstellungen umfassenden Folge "Die Heiligen aus der Sipp-, Mag- und Schwägerschaft des Kaisers Maximilian, die von verschiedenen Holzschneidern aus der Werkstatt Jost de Negkers zwischen 1516 und 1518 in Augsburg ausgeführt wurden. Von Kaiser Maximilian I. in Auftrag gegeben - die dargestellten Heiligen waren alle mit dem Hause Habsburg verbunden - zählt sie zu den grossen Holzschnittunternehmungen des Kaisers zwischen 1510 und 1519 in Nürnberg. Durch den Tod Maximilian I. im Jahr 1519 blieb das Projekt jedoch unvollendet. Es entstanden wohl insgesamt 83 Holzschnitte.

Leonhard Beck - Theuerdank stabs an opponent in his sights with his sword

Rare 'schnorckel schrift' edition used for the first edition on paper right after the on parchment from 1517 distributed by Maximilian to his relatives and court, this is from the first public sets on paper published in the early 16th century, exactly like the parchment edition. Theuerdank on foot in a harness stabs his opponent in his sights with his sword. In the foreground at left Ernhold, at right Captain Fürwittig.----------'Theuerdank'.From one of the most important works of the German Renaissance printed in the year 1517 in Nuremberg: an epic poem by Emperor Maximilian I himself! Therein the Kaiser addresses his journey to meet his new bride, Mary of Burgundy, which is embedded in an environment which is typical for that time – full of adventure and chivalrous virtues. The most important artists of the time, including Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schäufelein, and Leonhard Beck, contributed to the magnificent illustrations in the form of 118 woodcuts. The Augsburg printer Hans Schönesperger, Maximilian’s imperial book printer, produced the work with this specially designed typeface.

Ausgabe. -- -- Die fünf präzise geschnittenen und von Bartsch ehemals Hans Burgkmaier zugeeigneten Blätter zählen zu der insgesamt 123 Darstellungen umfassenden Folge "Die Heiligen aus der 'Sipp-, Mag- und Schwägerschaft' des Kaisers Maximilian I.", die von verschiedenen Holzschneidern aus der Werkstatt Jost de Negkers zwischen 1516 und 1518 in Augsburg ausgeführt wurde. Die Folge wurde von Kaiser Maximilian I. in Auftrag gegeben - die dargestellten Heiligen waren alle mit dem Hause Habsburg verbunden - und zählt zu den großen Holzschnittunternehmungen des Kaisers zwischen 1510 und 1519 in Nürnberg. Durch den Tod des Kaisers 1519 ist das Projekt jedoch unvollendet geblieben. Unsere Exemplare stammen wohl aus der späten vierten Auflage, die von S. Laschnitzer zwischen 1886-1887 herausgegeben wurde.- Ganz ausgezeichnete, klare und kräftige Drucke verso teils mit schönem Druckrelief, mit feinem Rändchen, H. 10 mit schmalem Rand um die Einfassung. Minimal angestaubt, vereinzelt etwas fleckig, sonst sehr schön erhalten. Allesamt aus der Sammlung des Kunsthändlers Franz Meyer, Dresden (verso mit dessen handschriftl. Vermerk, H. 10, 46, 63, 73, 101) sowie der Sammlung Erhard Kaps (Lugt 3549), H. 63 aus der Sammlung Friedrich II. Female saint before the body of a death king cut his hands of. See holds a part of his arm in here right hand. A coat of arms on the right. c.1516-18. The 'Saints connected with the house of Habsburg' were to form part of the 'Fürstliche Chronik' or 'Geburtsspiegel', an account of the ancestry of Emperor Maximilian I. Responsible for the project was Jacob Mennel (c.1470-1526), not Sebastian Brant as previously assumed. The project was abandoned after Maximilian's death. On auction woodcut from the 1799 edition after discovery of the almost unused blocks. Bartsch did attribute them to Hans Burkmair the elder.

(Title and letterpress spotted, a few heavy spots on plate 40, most other plates lightly spotted, plate 88 with soil mark at upper margin.) 19th-century yellow boards, red speckled edges (lacking most of spine, covers worn at extremities). Provenance : captions, naming the saints, pencilled in. 'BECK'S MOST ORIGINAL AND IMPORTANT WORK' (Dodgson II, p. 132). The woodcuts were based on a literary work by Jacob Mennel (1470-1526), written as part of an intended Frstliche Chronik or Geburtspiegel, a general account of Maximilian's ancestry. The Emperor's death led Mennel to publish it separately as Seel unnd heiligen Buch Keiser Maximilians Altfordern (Freiburg, 1522). Apart from the earliest proofs, there have been four editions of the woodcuts, two appearing in the 16th century (1522 and 1551) but containing only 89 woodcuts, while this is the first of two modern editions cited by Hollstein. With the exception of St. George, by Springinklee, which has no place in the series, the 119 cuts are all from the original blocks, still preserved at Vienna (of 123 blocks, three were too badly damaged to be used in the 1799 edition, and two blocks were lost). Bartsch was right in attributing the whole work to a single artist, though this subsequently proved to be Leonhard Beck (d. 1542) rather than Burgkmaier. The woodcutters are the group who worked at Augsburg in the Emperor's service under the direction of Jost de Negker.
