Washburn / Feb 14 [19], 1915; verso board handwritten label: Major Washburn Catalogue note: George Washburn enrolled into the 133rd Regiment Infantry organized in New York City by the Metropolitan Police (the 133rd were known as the Second Metropolitan Guard); he mustered in on September 24, 1862. As captain of Company K Major Washburn saw action in Louisiana from 1863 to 1864; and in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign under Sheridan in 1864. Captain Washburn was promoted to major on December 24, 1864. The 133rd were mustered out June 6, 1865. He mustered in as Sergeant-of-Company G of the 49th in August of 1861; he was promoted to Second Lieutenant in April of 1862, and First Lieutenant in September that same year. He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 13, 1862, having been hit by shrapnel. His right forearm was amputated in a field hospital.     'Portrait of a Woman in a Bonnet Hat and Elaborate Shaw'. Circa 1918. Pastel on arched topped embossed and gilt edged cardboard. Signed and dated lower right. Note: Born near Dayton, Ohio, Walter Beck became a well-known late 19th century artist who worked in a wide range of mediums and subject matter. He even perfected a new painting technique using a starch-film on blotting paper. In the 1930s, he turned his talents to landscape design and began creating 'Innisfree', one of the premier gardens in the United States near Millbrook, NY.
