Biography from the Archives of askART; The following information was submitted by Bob Higgins: Howard Daniel Becker (American, 1914-1995) was born 1914 in Albany, NY graduated at Pratt Institute of Art in 1935, Brooklyn, NY. Since 1941 to 1945 armed with a paintbrush and pencil, he traveled with the U.S. Army to North Africa, Italy and France, producing hundreds of water color sketches of U.S. Army forces, war damage and civilian life. He won several Army art contests, and also found favor with Colonel R. Hunter Clarcson, who rewarded him with a week in Paris, to paint. Returning home, he left for the South West, living at the Taos art colony and in Santa Fe, traveling to Arizona and California, where he spent almost nine years, painting and holding exhibitions. Becker settle at Honesdale, PA, which became his home, where he lived half of his life, capturing historical scenes, old farms, covered bridges, country churches. Upon his passing, as many as 3,700 pictures were counted at his home. His genealogy is well established, being traced to the 1650's, when the Beckers arrived in New York State from the Netherlands. In recognition of outstanding contribution to the preservation and appreciation of the Heritage of the Upper Delaware Valley, Alliance of UDH, who rewarded him, posthumously, in 1997. The same year in the Honesdale Historical Society Museum was open the retrospective exhibition of best selected forty works of this rediscovered artist. Later, in 2005, Becker's three oil paintings were exhibited at prestigious, totally dedicated to "Architecture in the State Landscape" exhibition, and presented by Governor and Mrs. Edward G. Rendell in their Governor's Residence, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
