I.B. "Die Hölle" by Max Beckmann is a key work in the artist's graphic oeuvre. A letter dated 10 May 1919 to his Munich publisher Reinhard Piper reveals that the idea for this cycle came from Israel Ber Neumann, Berlin. I.B. Neumann, alongside Reinhard Piper in Munich, was the second major publisher of Beckmann's prints. Since 1911, he published numerous individual sheets by the artist, and in November 1917 he organized Beckmann's first graphic exhibition in Berlin. The cycle, consisting of ten compositions and a self-portrait, reflects Beckmann's experiences immediately after the First World War. Germany was marked by inflation and economic hardship and, until the proclamation of the Weimar Republic in November 1919, was a powder keg. In many places, such as Frankfurt or Berlin, which Beckmann visited in March 1919, civil war-like conditions prevailed, which likely provided the impetus for "Die Hölle". The sheets were published in an edition of 75 copies, of which 50 were included in a portfolio with a lithographed cover and 25 were sold as loose sheets. Each is a drawing that the artist executed in chalk on large-format paper; they were transferred to lithographic stones using the transfer process and printed on Simili-Japan by the C. Naumann printing house in Frankfurt am Main. In our lot, the rare portfolio with the self-portrait in the second state of reworking with lines of text is present. In contrast to the information in Hofmaier, the title page with the identical self-portrait as a single sheet is not included here. In his depictions, Beckmann guides us through postwar Berlin—a world full of violence, hunger, and social instability. Unsparingly, and yet without moral accusation, he shows a deeply traumatized society. With his self-portrait, he presents himself as a fairground barker inviting the audience to enter hell. In this form, the portfolio is extremely rare. The portfolio "Gesichter" was compiled in 1919 by Julius Meier-Graefe and published as the thirteenth print of the Marées-Gesellschaft, Munich. It contains 19 drypoint works that the artist created between 1914 and 1918, during the First World War. The edition, printed by Franz Hanfstaengl in Munich, comprised 40 copies on Japan paper and 60 copies on laid paper, all bearing the blindstamp of the Marées-Gesellschaft. According to the imprint, our portfolio is the copy intended for the publisher. The 19 prints do not form a narrative sequence; rather, they are snapshots of human existence. We see war-injured soldiers, operating tables, lonely city dwellers, but also bourgeois family scenes, playing children, and the desolation of purchased love. The series opens and closes with two self-portraits of the artist. What unites the works is that the artist skillfully exaggerates the characters' facial features, distorts spaces, and fully exploits the scratchy texture of drypoint to achieve an expressive effect. Upper left with restored tear, upper centre with neatly supported small tear. Verso with traces of old mounting. With the rise to power of the National Socialists, Max Beckmann was increasingly subjected to hostility, which ultimately culminated in his dismissal from the Städelschule in Frankfurt in April 1933. He then left Frankfurt and moved to Berlin. On the day of Adolf Hitler's radio-broadcast speech for the opening of the "Grossen Deutschen Kunstausstellung" in Munich in 1937, Max Beckmann left Germany for good. His sister-in-law Hedda Schoonderbeek, who lived in the Netherlands, picked up the Beckmanns in Berlin and brought them to Amsterdam. The trip was disguised as a vacation. Initially accommodated at the Pension Bank, the Beckmanns were finally able to move into an apartment with a studio at Rokin 85 in October. In his Amsterdam exile, he painted, among other things, self-portraits as well as profound, enigmatic pictures with partly mythological content. Since 1939, Beckmann had tried to obtain a visa for the United States, but without success, so he had to remain in Amsterdam during the war. Only in the summer of 1947 did Max and Mathilde Beckmann receive a visa for the USA. From the end of September, the artist taught again for the first time in fourteen years and took over a master class at the School of Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. The sheet offered here belongs to the mythologically charged group of exile works from Amsterdam. The theme "Venus und Mars" has often been depicted artistically since antiquity: the god of war is vanquished by the goddess of love and, proverbially, lays down his weapons for love and beauty. As a representative example, Sandro Botticelli's painting from around 1485 in the National Gallery in London may be mentioned. In Beckmann's work, Venus is depicted as a female commander who resolutely dismisses the warlike Mars. It is a highly charged depiction; on the left, the American flag flies atop a stylized skyscraper. The artist writes in his diary on 5 November 1945: "Schöne Zeichnungen gemacht, "Venus -Mars" und "Telephon"". With the 1922 series "Jahrmarkt", Max Beckmann created one of the most powerful print cycles of the early 1920s. The fairground becomes a stage for human existence: between showmen, performers, and curiosities, a pictorial world unfolds, full of tension, masquerade, and psychological intensity—themes that characterize Beckmann's entire oeuvre. The opening sheet "Der Ausrufer" (self-portrait) points to the artist himself as both observer and part of this multi-layered world theater. A major and rarely fully preserved masterwork of Beckmann's expressionist printmaking. According to James Hofmaier, the title "Kasbek" refers to a nightclub in Berlin run by Russian emigrants, named after the third highest mountain in Georgia. Depicted is Naila, Mrs. H.M. (Hildegard Melms), Beckmann's muse and lover, whom he also portrayed in paintings and other prints, together with an accordion player slightly set back. In addition to a few trial proofs, there is an edition of 30 copies of this sheet, presumably published by Graphisches Kabinett, Munich. Some prints were numbered by Günther Franke, while others, like the present sheet, remained unnumbered.
