JAMES CARROLL BECKWITH New York/Illinois/Missouri/France, 1852-1917 Portrait of the infamous renowned beauty Evelyn Nesbit. Signed upper right "Carroll Beckwith". Provenance: Purchased from William Postar, Boston, in the 1970s. Evelyn Nesbit's exceptional beauty captured America's fascination in the early parts of the 20th Century. The highly sought-after model, chorus girl and actress's likeness appeared in magazines, national advertising campaigns, fashion photography and pin-ups, and she was idealized as a "Gibson Girl". Born in a small town near Pittsburgh in 1884, she lived in poverty for most of her childhood and moved to Philadelphia, where her modeling career began, then to New York at age 14. One of the first artists she modeled for in New York was James Carrol Beckwith, a respected instructor at the Art Students League, who introduced her to other legitimate artists. Despite her popularity as an artist's model, Nesbit was ambitious and determined to pursue an acting career. While working as a Broadway actress she had romantic relationships with actor John Barrymore and polo player James Montgomery Waterbury. She was also involved with socialite Stanford White, architect with the firm of McKim, Meade, and White and notorious womanizer. In 1905 she married Pittsburgh millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw, who was known to be mentally unstable. Nesbit achieved worldwide notoriety in 1906 when her husband shot and killed 52-year old White on the rooftop theater of Madison Square Garden, believing he was exacting revenge for White raping Nesbit when she was 14. The ensuing trial was dubbed "The Trial of the Century", the first time the phrase was known to be used. Because of the media frenzy, the jury was ordered to be sequestered, believed to be the first time this was ordered in American history. Nesbit testified on Thaw's defense, providing the sordid details of her relationship with Sanford White. Thaw was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was sentenced to involuntary commitment at a state mental hospital. In 1915 he was judged sane and was released from custody. The same year he and Nesbit divorced. Her subsequent marriages also ended in divorce. Nesbit never regained the same level of popularity and was referred to as "the lethal beauty". The last years of her life were lived quietly. She died in 1967. Oil on canvas, 33" x 24". Framed 40" x 30".

James Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917 New York, NY)

''The Letter'', portrait of a woman seated in a garden with a St. Charles Spaniel, signed lower right: Carroll Beckwith, titled on a frame plaque, oil on linen laid to canvas, 20'' H x 16'' W, est: $100,000/150,000. Exhibited: Bernard Black Gallery, New York, NY, ''Gallery's Image - 1965'', p. 7, illustrated. Note: 'The Letter'' is an exceptional example of James Carroll Beckwith's naturalistic portraiture. Beckwith, who disliked his first name and went by Carroll or ''Becky'', was a noted American landscape, genre and portrait painter who vigorously adhered to academic style in his teaching but incorporated Impressionistic elements of light and execution 'en plein air' into his own work. Beckwith was born in Hannibal, Missouri, but his family moved to Chicago when the artist was an infant. After high school, Beckwith enrolled at the Chicago Academy of Design with his good friend Frederick Stuart Church, and the two studied drawing under Conrad Diehl. A year or so later, Beckwith and his family moved to New York where the artist enrolled in National Academy of Design. In 1873, Beckwith travelled to Europe for the first time, spending five years abroad, mostly in Paris. There he worked in the studio of Emile Carolus-Duran (who would remain a major influence on Beckwith?s portraiture), enrolled at the Academie Suisse and Ecole Des Beaux Arts and also studied with Leon Bonnat. He also befriended fellow American students John Singer Sargent, Frank Fowler and William Merritt Chase. Returning to New York in 1878, Beckwith was hired, along with Chase, at the Art Students League. Beckwith?s class was considered rigorous and academic while Chase taught a freer style. Beckwith was an instructor there for 20 years. While teaching, Beckwith had a studio in the Sherwood Studio Building in Manhattan where he focused on painting portraits and idealized female figures. He exhibited annually at the National Academy of Design and was active in local arts and civics organizations. Beckwith was renowned for his flattering depictions of society women and men, including military portraits, and his portraits of fellow artist friends were also incredibly popular. Beckwith had an unwavering lifetime commitment to the tenets of academic art, particularly when it came to teaching, but his own work also suggests influences of Impressionism garnered from his experiences in France. In the present work, a central figure and her dog are seated in a verdant garden setting. The tightly composed figural arrangement is juxtaposed with lively brushwork and a play of light and shadow. Dappled light highlights the figure's white blouse and a dynamic play of sunlight and shadow on the green lawn focus the viewer?s attention on the contemplative expression and gesture of the figure. The woman's prim dress and loyal dog are the personification of Victorian correctness but Beckwith imbues the sitter with personality through her candid and private demeanor and by seating her on a naturalistically painted log.

Millet's House from / the fields Oil on panel 10 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches Provenance: Simon Parkes, New York Sale, Christies, New York, Fine American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture, Jul. 17, 2002, lot 52 Exhibited: New York, Berry-Hill Galleries, Inc., Intimate Revelations, the Art of Carroll Beckwith, Dec. 1, 1999-Jan 15, 2000 The present work depicts the home of Jean-Francois Millet in Barbizon, France. It is unclear whether Beckwith, at the time a student in the atelier of Emile-Auguste Carolus-Duran, ever met the older artist, who died in 1875. A posthumous portrait sketch of Millet by Beckwith drawn for an article by T. H. Bartlett, "Barbizon and Jean-Francois Millet," that appeared in the June, 1890 issue of Scribner's Magazine, was based upon an 1864 photograph by Eugene Cuvelier,. C
