The Big Canvas' by James Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917) ***SEE ADDENDUM

Few eras in American history are as fundamentally iconic as the turn from the 19th century to the 20th, marked by a lavish extravagance that could only be matched by the participating characters. This painting offers a window into that history with a portrait of Evelyn Nesbit (1884/5-1967), actress and subject of the murder of Stanford White (1853-1906) by Harry Kendall Thaw (1871-1947). Thaw, the son of a wealthy coal and railroad baron, lived a life of unchecked decadance while showing signs of what would now be clearly understood as sociopathy and obsessive paranoia. Despite these tendencies, his family (particularly his mother) worked vigilantly to keep the Thaw name untarnished, applying bribes and a team of lawyers to cover up his escapades. After seeing her at a show, he doggedly pursued Evelyn Nesbit and routinely showered her with gifts and praise while simultaniously abusing and manipulating her, eventually pressing her into marriage in 1905. Unknown to him, Stanford White, a promininent archtect and socialite, had forced himself upon her when she was only 16 years old. White and Thaw were already at frequent odds, with Thaw blaming White for the refusal of many of New York City's most esteemed clubs to admit him, believing White was influencing the clubs against him despite the more obvious reasons provided by his reckless, playboy lifestyle. Already obsessed with female chastity, Thaw, upon learning of what happened to his wife, believed this woud be his final indignity. On June 25, 1906, Thaw murdered White during a show at the rooftop theatre of Madison Square Garden, killing him instantly. Thaw was arrested in what became known as "The Trial of the Century' with the press printing every salacious rumor they could get their hands on, true or not. Ultimately, Thaw was sentenced to Matteawan State Hospital, though not for the rest of his life. Nesbit would occasionally visit him, though they would divorce in 1915. And so we have here a painting of Nesbit herself, the 'Woman Who's Beauty Spelled Death and Ruin" as the papers of the time called her. Painted by renowned artist James Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917) in a beautiful gown with a look of quiet intelligence. It was women like Nesbit and paintings like this that inspired the 'Gibson Girl' ideal that so encapasulated women at the turn of the century. A life size work set in it's original gilt frame, this piece measures 45 3/4" x 65 3/4", 39 1/2" x 59 1/4" site. This piece has had expert conservation work done with a perforation remedied at the bottom right corner. ***Addendum*** - Thanks to new evidence provided by researcher Karen Commins, we believe this painting may not be of Evelyn Nesbit but rather a woman named Selma Feller, with detailed writings from Beckwith's own diary of his life providing many new insights. Fuller herself was likely a German immigrant, coming to the United States in 1906 and finding employment as a maid to a Mrs. G. L. Harrison. In 1908 Beckwith meets Feller and in short order becomes his greatest muse. It's just over a month later that he calls her "one of the handsomest models I ever had." and after modeling for him several times he begins the "big canvas" on 03/19/1909. In notes from his journal he laments his inability to capture her beauty, constantly repainting features and making corrections until it was finally perfect. Further evidence from the back of the canvas marked 'Selma 1909' supports this claim. Now, this beautiful endeavor has been rediscovered here. Kept by Beckwith until his death, this painting was last seen at an auction of his estate on March 14, 1918 as lot 187 at The American Art Galleries Auction in New York of Carroll Beckwith's Finished pictures and studies and was purchased by an F. J. Wulling for $35. Hidden from public record for over 100 years, Beckwith's 'Selma' returns to auction today. Additional information and documentation is available on request. He is best known for portrait and genre subjects, was skilled in mural painting, and was highly respected as an art educator. Born in Hannibal, Missouri in 1852, Beckwith, who intensely disliked his first name of James, had childhood education at several New York and Ohio military academies, but at age nine, was withdrawn because of severe inflammatory rheumatism. The remainder of his life was troubled by ill health.He moved with his parents to Chicago, and, showing art talent, was enrolled at the Chicago Academy of Design. His good friend was Frederick Stuart Church, and they took instruction together drawing from the antique under the tutelage of Conrad Diehl.

Condition report: In generally good to fair condition. Craquelure is occasionally present, most heavily concentrated in the figure's garment. The canvas is very slightly loose on the stretcher. A milky green varnish has been applied around the figure an on her garment, making restoration difficult to identify. The varnish is slightly visible to the naked eye as it presents slightly glossy as compared to the rest of the paint. See Specialist's photos for details. Frame: 31 x 25 1/2 x 2 1/2 in.

JAMES CARROLL BECKWITH New York/Illinois/Missouri/France, 1852-1917 Portrait of the infamous renowned beauty Evelyn Nesbit. Signed upper right "Carroll Beckwith". Provenance: Purchased from William Postar, Boston, in the 1970s. Evelyn Nesbit's exceptional beauty captured America's fascination in the early parts of the 20th Century. The highly sought-after model, chorus girl and actress's likeness appeared in magazines, national advertising campaigns, fashion photography and pin-ups, and she was idealized as a "Gibson Girl". Born in a small town near Pittsburgh in 1884, she lived in poverty for most of her childhood and moved to Philadelphia, where her modeling career began, then to New York at age 14. One of the first artists she modeled for in New York was James Carrol Beckwith, a respected instructor at the Art Students League, who introduced her to other legitimate artists. Despite her popularity as an artist's model, Nesbit was ambitious and determined to pursue an acting career. While working as a Broadway actress she had romantic relationships with actor John Barrymore and polo player James Montgomery Waterbury. She was also involved with socialite Stanford White, architect with the firm of McKim, Meade, and White and notorious womanizer. In 1905 she married Pittsburgh millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw, who was known to be mentally unstable. Nesbit achieved worldwide notoriety in 1906 when her husband shot and killed 52-year old White on the rooftop theater of Madison Square Garden, believing he was exacting revenge for White raping Nesbit when she was 14. The ensuing trial was dubbed "The Trial of the Century", the first time the phrase was known to be used. Because of the media frenzy, the jury was ordered to be sequestered, believed to be the first time this was ordered in American history. Nesbit testified on Thaw's defense, providing the sordid details of her relationship with Sanford White. Thaw was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was sentenced to involuntary commitment at a state mental hospital. In 1915 he was judged sane and was released from custody. The same year he and Nesbit divorced. Her subsequent marriages also ended in divorce. Nesbit never regained the same level of popularity and was referred to as "the lethal beauty". The last years of her life were lived quietly. She died in 1967. Oil on canvas, 33" x 24". Framed 40" x 30".
