    John Beer - British, 1860-1930 The Grand National, 1915, At the 5th Fence & The Grand National, 1915, At the Last Jump (a pair) Watercolor 10" x 14" Signed, inscribed as titled and with horse's names, dated 1915 Under the late March sky of Liverpool, 20 horses lined up for the start of the 77th renewal of the Grand National. An annual steeplechase race, the Grand National was first run in the 1830s. The course involves two laps totaling more than four miles of track and 30 harrowing obstacles, which the winner usually traverses in just under 10 minutes. Of the 20 horses that set out in the 1915 Grand National just nine would finish, with the 5-year-old Ally Sloper emerging victorious. Ally Sloper, sired by Travelling Lad out of Sally in Our Alley, claimed a second Grand National victory for trainer Aubrey Hastings while also establishing Lady Margaret Nelson as the first female owner to win the race.

The Union Jack Stakes was a Flat race contested at Liverpool (Aintree). It was something of a Classic trial, and Craganour, the subsequently disqualified winner of the 1913 Derby, was a runner-up in it.

    John Beer (British 1860-1930, active 1885-1915), THE FINISH FOR THE DERBY 1913, gouache and watercolour, signed John Beer, inscribed THE FINISH FOR THE DERBY 1913 in the artist's hand and additionally with identifying legend of all visible finishers, mounted, framed and glazed, label to backboard The Tryon Gallery Ltd., London, overall 40 by 49cm. This was the infamous 'Suffragette Derby' of 4th June 1913, where women's rights protester Emily Davison threw herself in front of the King's horse Anmer at Tattenham Corner and died of her injuries four days later. First past the post Craganour was afterwards disqualified by the stewards for interference and the second horse, the blinkered 100-1 shot Aboyeur, pronounced the winner.

    John Beer (British 1860-1930, active 1885-1915), THE FINISH FOR THE ST LEGER STAKES, DONCASTER 1912, watercolour, signed John Beer, inscribed THE FINISH FOR THE ST LEGER STAKES, DONCASTER 1912 in the artist's hand, the winner Tracery and placed horses identified below in the artist's hand, mounted, framed and glazed, label to backboard The Tryon Gallery, Ltd., London, overall 40 by 49cm. American-bred Tracery was a top-class racehorse, winning the St. Leger, Eclipse Stakes, Champion Stakes and St James's Palace Stakes for his owner Mr August Belmont Jnr., whose father was the founder and namesake of the Belmont Stakes, third leg of the US Triple Crown.

    John Beer (British 1860-1930, active 1885-1915), THE SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL '08, watercolour, signed John Beer, inscribed in the artist's hand THE SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL '08 , with runners Rory O'Moore, Wee Busbie and the winner Atrato also identified in the artist's hand, mounted, framed and glazed, 44 by 51.5cm. The Scottish Grand National, inaugurated at Bogside Park in 1867, was run there until the course's closure in 1965, after which the race moved to Ayr.

    John Beer (British 1860-1930, active 1885-1915), BELIEVED TO BE A MEMENTO MORI OF THE JOCKEY CAPTAIN RODDY OWEN unusual, interesting watercolour highlighted with gouache depicting the finish of a Flat race circa 1896, showing five horses fighting out the finish, the jockeys in silks with the exception of a rider in the mournful looking black uniform of military undress, believed to represent the phantom of the 1892 Grand National-winning jockey Captain Roddy Owen, who died in 1896 whilst serving as an officer in the Lancashire Fusiliers in Egypt, mounted, framed, glazed, overall 48 by 84cm.
