As we see in the work in bidding, Jan van Beers was a Belle Époque painter specialized in portraying bourgeois and aristocratic women with a refined and theatrical elegance, showing sophisticated female figures dressed in silks, velvets, lace, hats and jewelry of the Parisian high fashion. His works stand out for an extremely detailed and almost photographic technique, with great attention to textures, light and delicate gestures, creating images of mysterious, distant and cosmopolitan women who embody the feminine ideal of the European high society of the late nineteenth century. Son of the poet Jan Van Beers, Jan van Beers studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp before settling in Paris in 1878, where he worked in the studio of the painter Alfred Stevens and became the leader of a group of young artists known as the "Van Beers clique". He began his career as a painter of historical scenes related to the Renaissance, highlighting works such as The Funeral of Charles the Good, but later abandoned historical painting to devote himself to portraits and scenes of bourgeois and aristocratic women of the Belle Époque, characterized by their elegance, luxury and great technical detail. In 1881 he caused an artistic scandal at the Brussels Salon when he was accused of painting over photographs due to the almost photographic realism of his works, although an investigation finally proved that he had not used photographs under the painting. He also worked as an illustrator for magazines and made drawings for a deluxe edition of his father's poetry.

As we see in the work in tender, Jan van Beers was a painter of the Belle Époque specialized in portraying bourgeois and aristocratic women with a refined and theatrical elegance, showing sophisticated female figures dressed in silks, velvets, lace, hats and jewelry of the Parisian high fashion, in intimate and luxurious scenes full of glamor, melancholy and coquetry. His works stand out for an extremely detailed and almost photographic technique, with great attention to textures, light and delicate gestures, creating images of mysterious, distant and cosmopolitan women who embody the feminine ideal of the European high society of the late nineteenth century. On this occasion, Van Beers presents an elegantly reclining female figure, wrapped in a delicate pink dress of vaporous fabrics and rich ornaments that evoke restrained sensuality and social distinction, characteristic traits of the bourgeois and aristocratic women that the artist portrayed in the refined atmosphere of the Parisian Belle Époque. The open book, discreetly placed in the lower right corner, also introduces a symbolic dimension that suggests the introspective and contemplative character of the sitter, inclined more towards sensibility and reverie than towards intellectual activity. Provenance: Private collection, Aartselaar Jan Van Beers starts his painting career with history paintings, but his real success comes with small to miniature portraits of the, mostly female, beau monde. He grows up in an artistic milieu: his father is the well-known poet Jan Van Beers (senior), his mother Hendrika Mertens is the daughter of the Antwerp city librarian. Like many contemporaries, Van Beers moves to Paris after his academic training. The wealthy Parisian bourgeoisie loves his hyper-realistic paintings depicting beautifully dressed ladies. They became his trademark from 1880 onwards. As a successful and turbulent artist, he likes to be in the limelight. As a result, he inevitably also often gets embroiled in controversy. In 1881, he exhibits two of his works at the Brussels Salon. Three critics believe they recognise a photograph under the layer of paint. This incident is immediately much discussed in the press and a lawsuit is even filed. Van Beers feels compelled to make a proposal: scratch away the paint. If the critics are right, the artist will pay a sum of money. None of the accusers dares to accept this, yet one day the painting is found scratched away. An unknown person, perhaps prompted by the great controversy surrounding the trial, had become too curious. Although ink markings are found underneath, there is not enough evidence to suggest that a photograph was painted over. Van Beers leaves the trial behind and, above all, does not let it get to his heart. His popularity reaches an unprecedented peak. He keeps the vandalised painting in his own personal collection after the Salon. Today, it is completely off the radar. At KMSKA, some of his paintings were examined using the most modern techniques. In 1881 exposeert hij twee van zijn werken in het Brussels salon. Drie critici menen een foto te herkennen onder de verflaag. Dit voorval wordt meteen druk besproken in de pers en er wordt zelfs een proces opgestart. Van Beers voelt zich genoodzaakt met een voorstel te komen: kras de verf dan maar weg. Indien de critici gelijk hebben, zal de artiest een geldsom betalen. Niemand van de aanklagers durft hierop in te gaan, maar toch wordt het schilderij op een dag gekrast terug gevonden. Een onbekende, wellicht aangezet door de grote hetze rond het proces, was te nieuwsgierig geworden. Hoewel er een ondertekening in inkt gevonden wordt, is er niet voldoende bewijs dat het om een overschilderde foto zou gaan. Van Beers laat het proces achter zich en laat het vooral ook niet aan zijn hart komen. Zijn populariteit kent een ongekende piek. Het gevandaliseerde schilderij houdt hij na het Salon zelf bij in zijn persoonlijke collectie. Vandaag de dag is het volledig van de radar verdwenen. In het KMSKA werd een aantal van zijn schilderijen onderzocht met de meest moderne technieken. Hieruit bleek dat hij geen foto's overschilderde, maar wel naschilderde, wat ook andere tijdgenoten deden.

For your consideration is this pair of framed lace / lattice artwork of two clowns Pierrot & Pierrette, done by renowned Belgium artist Jan Marie Constantin Van Beers (1852-1927). Belgian painter and illustrator Jan Marie Constantin Van Beers (18521927) is renowned for his works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was raised in an artistic family and was born in Lier, Belgium. He began his formal artistic education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Van Beers is renowned for his genre scenes, portraits, and depictions of everyday life. He is known for his meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in capturing textures and fabrics. His subjects frequently included stylishly attired people in various social contexts, offering a window into the Belle Époque period. During his lifetime, Van Beers achieved fame and success, particularly as a portrait painter for the aristocracy and elite of Belgium. His work had an enduring influence on later art movements such as Symbolism and Art Nouveau. The artwork shows two famous clowns, Pierrot & Pierrette in the Commedia dell'arte tradition of Italian theater. Pierrot is a lovelorn and naive character frequently featured in amusing and touching sketches, especially those featuring unrequited love. He can be recognized by his white face, loose white costume, and sad expression. The artwork shows amazing detail, with the first one showing Pierrot holding a flower in Pierrette's face as she sleeps in a chair. The artist signature can be seen in the bottom right corner. The second piece shows the opposite, with Pierrette teasing Pierrot with a flower from higher up. The pieces are double matted with a large piece of green paper and a smaller black piece of paper and framed in silver colored metal frames. The pieces show good condition overall with no signs of wear or damage present. The visible art measures 7 1/4" L x 3 3/8" W, while the entire piece measures 12 1/2" L x 8 5/8" W x 7/8" D. The collective weight of both pieces is 2 pounds and 14 ounces.
