Overall Size: 36 x 26 in. Sight Size: 14 1/2 x 20 1/2 in. Albertus van Beest (1820–1860) was a Dutch marine artist and draughtsman celebrated for his evocative seascapes, ship portraits, and coastal scenes that reflect the rich maritime tradition of 19thâcentury Europe. Born in Rotterdam, he was drawn early to nautical life and likely trained with established marine painters before gaining recognition for his finely detailed pencil and wash drawings as well as oil paintings of ships at sea. In 1843 he was invited by Prince Hendrik of the Netherlands to accompany an extended voyage to the Mediterranean, an experience that deepened his connection to maritime subjects. Later in life he moved to the United States, where he lived and worked in Boston and New York until his death, producing acclaimed works that blended Dutch Romantic sensibilities with the dynamic light and atmospheres of the Atlantic world. His drawings and paintings are held in major Dutch and American collections, underscoring his enduring legacy in marine art.

Albertus van Beest (Dutch American, 1820-1860). A large gallery size original antique oil painting on canvas. Painted in the American School style of the Early National Era. Titled, "Rebecca," a popular name for sailing ships in the early 19th Century. A figural naval marine landscape with a profusion of sailing ships and boats on a deep sea with crashing waves, mariner figures, and sea birds in flight, under a blue sky with darkening clouds. Brass name plate affixed to front with title, date, and artist name REBECCA 1859 ALBERTUS VAN BEEST. The artist was a putative follower of Jan Hendrik van de Laar (1807-1874). Presented in an ornate gilt frame carved to corners with decorative harpoon, ropes, buoys, and other nautical forms. Work Size: 39 x 72 in. Dimensions: 53 X 86.5 X 5.5 in. Condition: Good overall condition having average surface wear. Relined with older restorations. Frame having moderate storage wear to edges and corners. Estate fresh to the market. Van Beest . 51. PROVENANCE: Vose Galleries, Boston (labels verso). Rotterdam-born marine painter Albertus van Beest grew up on the wharves of Amsterdam. At an early age he was sponsored by Prince Henry of the Netherlands who also appointed him official artist of the Royal Dutch Fleet. On at least one occasion, van Beest accompanied Prince Henry on a voyage to the Far East as his personal artist. Following three years of painting with the Dutch Fleet in the Mediterranean, van Beest spent a year in Iceland, then roamed the coasts of Brazil, Patagonia, and the Falkland Islands before emigrating to New England via California in 1845. Painting both in Boston and New York, van Beest was responsible for contributing substantially to the developing American Luminist style. Among his better-known students were William Bradford, with whom he produced several collaborations that bear both their signatures, and Robert Swain Gifford.
