Reinhold Begas (German, 1831–1911) Otto von Bismarck Bronze Bust Late 19th Century Measurements: 9" H x 6" W x 3 1/2" D Cast bronze portrait bust depicting a stern, mustachioed male figure, shown cropped at the chest and wearing a draped coat. The modeling emphasizes expressive facial features, a high forehead, and deeply set eyes, with broad, textured handling of the surface consistent with late 19th-century German sculptural realism. The bust is raised on an integral circular socle base. The reverse inscribed “R. Begas / Aktien Gesellschaft / H. "Die Büste des Fürsten Bismarck ..." -- Begas, Reinhold, Bildhauer, der wichtigste Berliner Bildhauer der Wilhelminischen Ära (1831-1911). 5 Autographen. Verschied. Formate. 1880-1891. -- 2 eigh. Briefe, 1 eigh. Gutachten, 1 Porträtfoto mit angefügter Signatur, 1 abgetrennte Signatur. - Das Gutachten lautet: "Bei der Besichtigung der von Herrn Unger gefertigten Statue des Prinzen Friedrich Karl, fand ich an Auffassung und Durchführung derselben durchaus nichts auszusetzen. Berlin, d. 18. Jan. 1880. Reinhold Begas." - Die beiden Briefe sind an einen Geheimrat (Max Jordan, Direktor der Nationalgalerie in Berlin?) gerichtet: "... Die Büste des Fürsten Bismarck für die Nationalgallerie steht fertig in meinem Atelier. Jeder Schlag daran ist von mir, ich glaube sie ist gut. Würden Sie die Güte haben, sie sich anzusehen und wann? [Berlin 19.XII.1887] ... Sie waren so freundlich mir für den 1sten April 20.000 Mark anweisen lassen zu wollen. Da ich an diesem Tage nicht in Berlin bin, das Geld aber nöthig brauche, so bitte ich Sie ... da das Geld gestern noch nicht angewiesen war, die Anweisung desselben für den 1sten April nicht zu vergessen ..." [25.III.1890]. - Eine Porträt-Fotografie des Künstlers (Halbfigur, sitzend, mit Mantel und Hut; 15 x 10 cm) hat jemand auf Karton gezogen und darunter einen Ausschnitt aus einem Schriftstück montiert, mit der Signatur "Reinhold Begas. Berlin 1 Nov 91" sowie dem blindgeprägten Monogramm "RB". Rückseitig ein weiteres Porträtfoto montiert (14.5 x 10 cm), das vielleicht ebenfalls Begas darstellen könnte.

Gladenbeck & Sohn“. Reinhold Begas gilt als Hauptvertreter der neobarocken Berliner Bildhauerschule. Seine monumentalen Arbeiten sind charakteristisch für das preußische Berlin der Kaiserzeit. Daneben entstehen zahlreiche Portraitbüsten und Kleinplastiken. Unsere Büste gibt es auch in einer größeren Bronzeversion, die ebenfalls den Gießerstempel der Berliner "Aktien-Gesellsch. von H. Gladenbeck & Sohn" (1886) trägt. Begas fec', foundary stamp 'Guss Gladenbeck & Sohn'., The most important representative sculptor of neo-baroque Wilhelmian. First apprenticeship by L. Widmann, following Berliner Kunstakademie by G. Schadow and Chr. D. Rauch. 1856-58 stay in Rome, friendship to F. von Lenbach, A. Feuerbach und A. Böcklin. Inspired by worky of Bernini and Michelangelo. After his return to Berlin he received a numerous orders for bis sculptures in Berlin. His main work is the 1886 Neptune fountain, designed for the Berlin City Palace.

Gladenbeck und Sohn’ The front inscribed ‘FUERST BISMARCK KANZLER DES DEUTSCHEN REICHES’ [Chancellor of the German Empire] Height: 44.5 cm Condition consistent with age Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 1,800 Euro This bust depicts the German statesman Otto von Bismarck at the age of 71. The latter was a recurring motif in the oeuvre of the sculptor Reinhold Begas, who is known for his numerous busts of important figures such as Helmuth von Moltke, Adolph von Menzel and the Hohenzollern. His most well-known work is probably the Bismarck Memorial – Begas’s last great creation – which was inaugurated in 1901 and can be admired at the Großer Stern in Tiergarten since 1938. Condition: The bust is in good condition with signs of age. It shows wear to the patina, scratches and small manufacturing flaws. The height measures 44.5 cm. Reinhold Begas (1831-1911) Reinhold Begas was born into a renowned family of artists and is considered one of the most important representatives of the Wilhelmine neo-baroque. He was initially trained by his godfather Ludwig Wichmann, before attending the academy in Berlin, where he studied under prominent figures of German classicism such as Gottfried Schadow and Christian Daniel Rauch. With the help of a grant, Begas traveled to Rome, where he was inspired by contemporaries such as Franz von Lenbach, Anselm Feuerbach, Arnold Böcklin and Heinrich Dreber as well as the Italian masters. Consequently his initially strictly classicist manner gave way to a powerful baroque style. Upon his return to Berlin, he received numerous commissions and created many important works. Begas managed to establish himself as a ‘state artist’. His main works include a Neptune fountain designed in 1886, which is displayed in front of the Rotes Rathaus since 1969. However, in addition to public monuments, Begas also created numerous small sculptures and portrait busts. Today works by Reinhold Begas can still be found in various public spaces as well as being held in the collections of renowned museums.
