PETER BEHRENS (Germany, 1868 - 1940) Table lamp, ca.1900. In bronze and glass. Signed on the base. White alabaster base. Electrified. Lacks patina on one of the wings at the back. Measurements: 77 x 48 x 65 cm. Modernist table lamp designed by Peter Behrens. Of sculptural concept and stylised lines, it is composed of a foot in patinated bronze and a diffuser with a structure of the same material and a translucent marbled glass cover. The sculptural foot, modelled in rounded bulk, takes the form of a winged woman in a hooded robe, raising her arms to support the dome that forms the lampshade. It houses three spotlights. The lamp is accompanied by an alabaster base. A German architect and designer between the 19th and 20th centuries, Peter Behrens studied painting at the Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf schools of art, and after completing his studies in 1890 he made a trip to Holland, after which he settled in Munich as a painter, advertising draughtsman, photographer and designer. In 1892 he co-founded the Munich Secession and five years later set up the avant-garde group United Workshops for Art in Crafts. He soon abandoned painting to devote himself to the design of jewellery, furniture and glass and porcelain objects, gaining great fame through his exhibitions in Berlin, Munich and Darmstadt. In fact, he taught at the famous Artists' Colony in Darmstadt between 1899 and 1903. That same year he moved to Düsseldorf, where he directed the School of Arts and Crafts. Four years later, in 1907, he joined the Deutscher Werkbund and began to work as artistic adviser to the firm AEG, for which he created factories and homes as well as furniture, industrial products and advertising illustrations, thus becoming a pioneer in the use of corporate identity. Names of the stature of Gropius, Van der Rohe and Le Corbusier worked in his office, and between the 1920s and 1930s he held important posts in Austria and Germany.

As a member of the Munich Secession, one of the founders of the Darmstadt Künstlerkolonie in 1901, and a driving force behind the German Werkbund, he was a key figure in the birth of German graphic design, corporate identity and applied art. In 1899, he and Joseph Maria Olbrich were called upon by the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hesse to embark upon a project intended to revolutionize the German art world: They were charged with building and running an artistic colony in the city of Darmstadt. Within the colony, Behrens even designed his own home, which displays the same sinuous lines and strong vertical flourishes as this poster - one of the most prominent examples of German Jugendstil design. Behrens' success at Darmstadt helped pave the way for his future endeavors such as designing corporate identity for AEG and subsequent important architectural commissions. Rare. In 1899 Behrens accepted the invitation of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse to co-build an artists' colony in Darmstadt. There the artist built an incredibly expensive and stylistically pure Art Nouveau house. It was a turning point in the focus of his interests and in the successful completion of his vision of the "gesamtkunstwerk". In 1903 he became director of his own Kunstgewerbeschule in Düsseldorf. Three years later, together with Hermann Muthesie, Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich, they joined forces to found the German Werkbund, which was to operate on the principles of the Arts and Craft movement to raise the general level of taste in Germany, an influential impulse supported by industrialists and investors. The rare Art Nouveau vase offered here, designed by Peter Behrens, was made by Merkelbach & Wick, Grenzhausen, Westerwälder Neukeramik, with model number 2055. It is a challenging realization of an electroplating decorative mounting made of gilded copper set in ceramic with an opalescent glaze. Excellent condition.
