The naval operations in China refer to the First Opium War. - Contemporary half roan dark green with matching marbled boards (rubbed and shaved, corners slightly bumped, renewed spine as well as flyleaves). London: Lovell Reeve, 1855. 2 volumes. Large 8vo (252 x 155 mm). 3 folding maps, 1 lithographed map and 36 plates (11 in color). Original blue cloth lettered in gilt, decorated in blind. Feet of spines frayed, hinges cracked, text block of vol 2 detaching from spine and lower cover nearly detached. FIRST EDITION. Belcher engaged in the last publicly funded search for Franklin (subsequent voyages were privately funded). Belcher records his sailing through Wellington Channel and discovery of Exmouth and North Cornwall Islands and the Belcher Channel leading to Jones Sound. Also described is the meeting and rescue of Commander Robert McClure of the Investigator on northern Banks Island by the western arm of the expedition under Henry Kellett. Belcher's decision to abandon four ships icebound in Wellington Channel in 1854 led to his court-martial, and despite his acquittal, he continued to be severely criticized in England. Weather and ice conditions are recorded throughout, as well as optical phenomena, natural history, scurvy, and a summary is given of the results of Franklin search expeditions to date. Autograph letter signed by Frank Toms (an assistant surgeon on Belcher's Franklin relief expedition) to an unidentified recipient (a fellow doctor), 'Off Cape Osborn, Wellington Channel', 20 February 1854, 8 pages, 4to, bifolia, annotated 'Letter No.2' (soiling, some wear to edges) A diatribe against Belcher by a subordinate on his Arctic expedition, complaining of his rudeness and authoritarian ways -- 'he tried on the Quarter Deck of Pioneer to wound my feelings (they are somewhat obtuse now) he was very rude indeed'; Toms goes on to provide a long account of an interview in which Belcher attempts to force him to retract a letter, and details other unjust treatment and 'petty insults'. The letter gives interesting details of medical conditions on the expedition, explaining that two men have died by scurvy, the second with 'dropsy commencing in the Lower Extremities and terminating in Hydrothorax &c.; I would not allow a Post Mortem this is no place nor time (a 2nd winter) to disturb the men in fair health -- the corpses were not buried for 4 weeks but allowed to remain on our upper deck to the disgust and annoyance of the men'. On the broader activities of the expedition, Toms reports that 'Sledges are now about to be sent in all directions to assist Resolute, Investigator &c; -- It is said that we shall forsake these ships -- I hope it may be early so as not to run any risks'. Toms was assistant surgeon on HMS Assistance during Belcher's 1852-54 expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, which culminated in the hasty abandonment of four of his ships, one of which was later recovered floating freely in the Atlantic. Belcher's ability to inspire dislike amongst his subordinates was legendary.

Appointed to the Sulphur in November 1836, Belcher and his crew surveyed the west coasts of both North and South America before being called back to England via the western route in 1839. After arriving in Singapore in 1840, Belcher was called back to China because of the war, and the Sulphur became actively engaged the following year in operations on the Canton River. Belcher and his crew finally returned to England in 1842, almost seven years after beginning their expedition. The Zoology , authored by J.E. Gray, John Gould, and J. Richardson, was originally published in 12 parts, and the Botany was published in 6 parts with descriptions by George Bentham.
