Larry Bell (b. 1939): Medium Eclipse

              Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Vapor drawing, 1983, signed 'Larry Bell' and dated lower center; together with the book Zones of Experience: The Art of Larry Bell. 28 1/2 x 22 1/2 in. (sheet), 30 x 24 in. (frame). Note: In 1978, Larry Bell began a series of works on paper that he called 'vapor drawings' that were created using the same technology he used to deposit thin films of color on glass. Because paper has different surface qualities than glass, Bell was able to experiment with the way the color adhered to the paper, creating different effects and spectrums of color. Also known as vacuum coating, or vacuum deposition, the use of this technology on paper allowed Bell to work quickly and spontaneously, mastering the technique that he could then apply to his work on other surfaces.

Larry Bell is one of the most renowned and influential artists to emerge from the Los Angeles art scene of the 1960s, alongside contemporaries Ed Ruscha and Robert Irwin, and had garnered international repute by the age of 30. Known foremost for his refined surface treatment of glass and explorations of light, reflection and shadow through the material, Bell’s significant oeuvre extends from painting and works on paper to glass sculptures and furniture design.Bell’s understanding of the potential of glass and light allows him to expand visual and physical fields of perception, and his sculptures to surpass traditional bounds of the medium. He has said: ‘Although we tend to think of glass as a window, it is a solid liquid that has at once three distinctive qualities: it reflects light, it absorbs light, and it transmits light all at the same time.’ Source: https://www.hauserwirth.com/artists/2851-larry-bell/

American Modernism Minimalismus Larry Stuart Bell o.T. aus: In Barcelona. 1989. Farblithographie auf Velinkarton. 76 x 56 cm (76 x 56 cm). Signiert und nummeriert. - Kanten punktuell etwas bestoßen. Sehr guter Zustand. Colour lithograph on wove cardboard. Signed and numbered. Edges isolated bumped. Very good condition. Splendid print in bright, strong colours of the full-size depiction. - One of 75 copies. - From the suite "In Barcelona" from the portfolio "California". Piblished by Ediciones Poligrafa, Barcelona. Printed by Ploígrafa Obra Gráfica, ibid. - Bell continually explores the characteristics of light on surfaces. Experimenting with the nature of different surface textures and their relation to space, he develops an approach full of spontaneity and intuition. The color lithographs in his Barcelona series are characterized by transparency and compression. Within printmaking, lithography offered him the possibility of applying many thin layers of color on top of each other, creating different tonal values, color transitions and coverages.
