He was both an artist - his oeuvre encompasses painting, sculpture and pottery - as well as an author and art critic, and was Professor of Fine Art at the University of Leeds, Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford, and Professor of the History of Theory of Art at Sussex. The previous owner, Yvonne Kapp, had a long-running relationship and subsequent friendship with the Artist.
