Tutte le tavole sono numerate in basso a sinistra, firmate e recano il privilegio (eccetto i nn.10,12 e 13). Ottime prove nel II stato di 3 dopo la comparsa della lettera ma prima dei ritocchi e dell'abrasione dell'indirizzo di Mariette, su carta vergellata sottile priva di filigrana. La tavola n.14 non omogenea ma ugualmente nel II stato di 3 e su carta vergellata.

Rosi Schilling (1905/10-1993) was the second wife of Edmund Schilling, former curator of the Stadelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, both of whom emigrated to England in 1937. Edmund Schilling was at this time one of the few acknowledged specialists in England on German graphic art, who built up his own collection during the 1940's and 1950's in London when Northern drawings were unfashionable and could be bought relatively inexpensively. Rosi Schilling worked for many years as a voluntary assistant at the British Museum on the preparation of John Rowlands' catalogue of early German drawings. The majority of Edmund Schilling's collection was bequeathed by his widow to the British Museum through the Art Fund (1997,0712.1 to 111).

Stefano della Bella, Italian 1610-1664- A Satyr family walking; etching on paper, tondo, 20 x 21.7 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Della Bella enjoyed the patronage of Grand Duke Lorenzo de Medici (1449-1492), which enabled him to study in Rome and Paris before returning to Florence in 1650, where he continued to work for the Medici family. Della Bella was a prominent and highly prolific printmaker, producing over 1,000 prints which are notable for their inventiveness and originality. Indeed, the present work is classic example of Della Bella's fantastical and humorous scenes, depicting a family of satyrs on a leisurely stroll in a wooded landscape.

Les cinq Morts. 5 Radierungen. Je ca. 17,5 x 14,5 cm. Um 1648. De Vesme 87-89, je wohl letzter Zustand. Wz. Große Wappenkartusche mit angehängten Buchstaben; Schriftzug. In della Bellas Interpretation mittelalterlicher Totentänze tritt der Tod als grausige, schreiende Skelettgestalt auf, die Menschen allen Alters rücksichtlos wie unvermittelt aus dem Leben reißt. Die Arbeit an den ersten vier Platten begann der Künstler um 1648 gegen Ende seines zehnjährigen Aufenthaltes in Frankreich, weshalb man im Hintergrund zweier Szenen den Cimetière des Innocents und den Turm von Notre-Dame des Bois erkennt - diese vertrauten Elemente müssen auf die zeitgenössischen Betrachter umso fürchterlicher gewirkt haben. Am Ende seines Lebens wandte sich della Bella erneut der Serie zu, konnte vor seinem Ableben jedoch nur mehr die fünfte Platte vollenden. - Ausgezeichnete Drucke überwiegend mit feinem Rändchen um die Einfassung bzw. Darstellung, vereinzelt minimal knapp in Letztere geschnitten. Partiell leicht gebräunt und stockfleckig, durchschlagende Leimflecken, montierungsbedingt dünne Stellen entlang der Ränder, ebenda unauffällig hinterlegte Fehlstellen mit dezenten Federretuschen, weitere kleine Randmängel und Gebrauchsspuren, sonst in gleichwohl guter Erhaltung. Die vollständige Serie selten. Aus der Sammlung Battista Venturi (Lugt 1550) sowie mit Sammlersignatur "FJ[?]:V" und "F.J.[?] Venturi". - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
