Hippolyte BELLANGE (1800-1866) Zouaves de la Garde impériale lors d'une halte, après la campagne de Crimée. Huile sur toile signée en bas à gauche (restaurations) 46 x 54 cm. Cadre ancien (étiquette A. Binant à Paris) en bois doré à décor de frises de feuilles de chênes, de lauriers et fleurettes, avec cartouche postérieur. 3 000 / 4 000 € Provenance : -Etude Ivoire. Angers. 29/05/2024 avec mention d’une provenance au Docteur Jean-Baptiste Nacquart, médecin de Balzac, puis descendance. On retrouve une mention manusctite de ce nom, à deux reprises, au dos du châssis de la toile. -Collection particulière. Historique : Le corps de Zouaves de la Garde impériale a été constitué en 1854 et s'illustra lors des campagnes de Crimée et d'Italie. L'officier au premier plan porte les insignes de la légion d'honneur et la médaille de Crimée. Il pourrait s’agir de la « Halte de zouaves (garde impériale) » référencé sous le n°447 des œuvres de l’artiste et référencé comme appartenant à Monsieur Baroche. Biographie : Hippolyte Bellangé (Paris, 1800-1866) Peintre de sujets militaires, dessinateur et lithographe, est sorti de l’atelier de Gros ou il se forma aux cotés de Charlet. De leur amitié naquit sa carrière de graveur, notamment en costumes militaires napoléoniens. Démarrant au Salon comme peintre de batailles il y obtient une première médaille et un rapide succès comme tel, même si son art fut aussi très apprécié pour la vivacité de ses scènes de genre. Conservateur du musée de Rouen en 1836 il se consacra alors presque exclusivement à la peinture. Sa vogue grandit jusqu’à son décès et sa dernière œuvre, La Garde meurt...fut un triomphe et figura même à l’Exposition Universelle de 1867.

Bgé" Date: c. 1850 Description: What does a battle painter paint if he doesn't paint battles? Hippolyte Bellangé was one of the most important battle painters in the France of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. A huge oeuvre, filled with thousands of soldiers, weapons and horses, where man becomes mass. He is highly celebrated and highly decorated for these depictions of mega-events. But what he has not lost amidst all the painted sabre-rattling and dabbed gun smoke is his eye for detail. He was able to bring mass battles to life from a wide angle, but as if under a microscope, he was also able to perceive the fate of the individual soldier. Like his friend Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, he depicted the lives of soldiers away from battle in numerous lithographs and drawings, sometimes melancholically compassionate, sometimes caricaturingly distanced. But always with an eye for detail, which in his case was not limited to outward appearances, but sometimes also took on psychological traits. But now back to the initial question: What does he paint now? First of all, very little else. Even when he slips into the genre, there is always a uniform somewhere that has found its way into the picture in one way or another. All the more astonishing is our drawing, which shows a destroyed piece of Christian art in that incomparably nervous stroke. It has been decaying and forgotten for so long that nature has stretched out its delicate fingers towards it. The cross lies broken on the ground. It is hard to imagine that it can return to its former splendour. If we are familiar with Bellangé's focussed depictions, in which the maltreated soldiers who have returned home are depicted, we cannot help but recognise an emotional connotation in this broken monument. Broken and lonely: these are words that can also be applied to the soldiers. In addition to this emotional dimension, what is particularly fascinating about this small and incredibly free drawing is the trembling line that does not stop anywhere and flits across the sheet as if driven, from which the clear forms only slowly emerge, only to be swallowed up again in the next moment by another twitch of line. This dynamic, almost breathing process is the special charm of this drawing, which is unusual for Bellangé, but exciting precisely because of it. Bgé" Date: c. 1850 Description: What does a battle painter paint if he does not paint battles? Hippolyte Bellangé was one of the most important battle painters in the France of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. A huge oeuvre, filled with thousands of soldiers, weapons and horses, where man becomes mass. He is highly celebrated and highly decorated for these depictions of mega-events. What he has not lost, however, amidst all the painted sabre rattling and dabbed gun smoke, is an eye for detail. In the wide angle, he was able to bring mass battles to life, but as if under a microscope, he was also able to perceive the individual soldier in his fate. Like his friend Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, he depicted the lives of soldiers away from battle in numerous lithographs and drawings, sometimes melancholically compassionate, sometimes caricaturedly distanced. But always with an eye for detail, which in his case was not limited to the outer appearance, but sometimes also took on psychological traits. But now back to the initial question: What does he paint now? First of all, very little else. Even when he slips into genre, there is always a uniform somewhere that has found its way into the picture in one way or another. All the more astonishing is our drawing, which in that incomparably nervous stroke shows a destroyed piece of Christian art. It has been decayed and forgotten for so long that nature has stretched out her delicate fingers to it. The cross lies broken on the ground. It is hard to imagine that it can return to its former glory. If one knows about Bellangé's focussed depictions in which the maltreated and returned soldiers are taken into consideration, one cannot help but recognise an emotional connotation in this broken monument. Broken and lonely: these are words that can also be applied to the soldiers. In addition to this emotional dimension, what is particularly fascinating about this small and extraordinarily free drawing is the trembling stroke that does not stop anywhere and flits across the page as if driven, from which the clear forms only slowly emerge, only to be swallowed up by another twitch of line in the next moment. Original watercolor battle scenery titled "Arriere Garde Protegeant un Convoi" label verso and on the watercolor under the mat. *Napoleonic Wars. Joseph Louis Hippolyte Bellangé (17 January 1800 10 April 1866) was a French battle painter and printmaker. His art was influenced by the wars of the first Napoleon, and while a youth, he produced several military drawings in lithography. He afterwards pursued his systematic studies under Gros, and with the exception of some portraits, devoted himself exclusively to battle-pieces. In 1824, he received a second class medal for an historical picture, and in 1834 the decoration of the Legion of Honour, of which Order he was made an officer in 1861. He also gained a prize at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855. Overall size: 14 1/2 x 17 3/4 in. Sight size: 6 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.
