BELLEFLEUR, Léon (French-Canadian, 1910-2007). Nostalgique. 1984. Oil on canvas. Signed at the lower right corner and on the back. Sight 23 ¾ x 19 ½”. Frame: 31 x 26 ¾”. For 25 years Léon Bellefleur was an elementary school teacher, developing his artwork during the summers and studying during the evenings at the école des Beaux-Arts in Montreal for several years. In 1954 he was able to retire and pursue his art career full-time. Along with Albert Dumouchel, Jacques de Tonnancour, Louis Archambault and others, Bellefleur joined the Prisme d'Yeux led by Alfred Pellan, signing their manifesto in 1948 and exhibiting with the group. These artists were responding to the approach of the Quebec Automatistes, and called for freedom of expression. Through this association, Bellefleur became interested in the Surrealist preoccupation with the subconscious as a source of inspiration. Minor occasional wear to frame. Excellent condition. Not examined out of frame.

Essentially the debate involved ideological differences around surrealism. Léon Bellefleur (1910-2007)not only had allegiances to both leading figures, but also exhibited with each side as well. This awkward position amid a highly charged intellectual atmosphere served Bellefleur well, however, and as his reading and interest in esoterism grew, his exploration of the mysterious unknown enriched his practice. Bellefleur’s first major exhibition came in 1950 at a group show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, with paintings inspired by the concept of surrealist automatism, where subconscious dreams are brought out through instinct and improvisation. By 1957 Bellefleur radically “broke with the nocturnal world to paint a brighter, more luminous diurnal universe” and began experimenting with the faceted style, whereby he used a spatula to build and apply paint, giving his compositions a much more angular appearance than his previous work. His use of the spatula, which was to become his signature mark, signifies a landmark shift. This change allowed him a “more direct way of conveying the impulses of his inspiration”, imbuing his work from 1957 onwards with a new spontaneity. Painted in 1962, Metamorphose is a synthesis of artistic ideas, and its very title hints at the shifting metamorphosis of spontaneous thought as it evolves on the canvas from concept to physical manifestation. A lyrical outburst of colour and line, the sliding paint in dark shades of purple, blue and black, and sharp agitated angles is offset and illuminated by splattered bright yellows, greens and a splash of vibrant red; it is clear that Bellefleur is revelling in the potential of the spatula to be an extension of his swirling imagination. In his earlier work, created through the use of automatic techniques, Bellefleur provided clues to indicate what his subconscious had revealed in the process of applying paint to board. This Composition provides no such clues, nor does the neutral title. An air of mystery, typical of his work, prevails. The focus becomes the masterful balance of blues, greens and ochres, with accents of red, mixed on the palette, then applied with palette knife and brush, or dripped onto the surface. The colour and texture of the central motif stand out against the flatly painted background. In this way, Bellefleur adhered to the traditional figure-ground relationship, indicating a more traditional approach to modernism than his more radical contemporaries, who sought to destroy illusionistic space by rendering the picture plane absolutely flat, with no suggestion of a subject.Estimate: $4,000–5,000

The work he made prior to this date was clearly influenced by Surrealism with its automatic techniques, and the art of the children he taught. In Paris, he knew André Breton, and incorporated the latter’s ideas of the unconscious into his artistic practice. The works he executed in Paris became increasingly suggestive and open to interpretation, as Bellefleur gradually dispensed with visual clues to their meaning. This multi-media work, inscribed “Paris 1955,” executed early on in his sojourn abroad, may have begun as a monoprint (or automatic painting), which Bellefleur then interpreted by drawing and painting over it. The work also demonstrates the artist’s interest in texture and the quality of paint, which may have been an effect of the printmaking techniques (etching and lithography) he was leaning toward at the time.Estimate: $9,000–12,000

Although he did not become a full-time artist until 1954, Bellefleur played an active part in Montreal’s art world in the 1940s. In 1948, he joined Prisme d’Yeux, a group of fifteen artists led by Alfred Pellan, which sought to counter the increasing influence of Paul Émile-Borduas and the Automatistes. Their manifesto promoted total freedom in art, without any aesthetic or ideological constraints, in contrast to the radical hardline position of the Automatistes. Its artists represented many different artistic tendencies. It was through his association with Prisme d’Yeux that Bellefleur became interested in Surrealism and automatic techniques for producing art.One of the last proponents of Surrealism in Quebec, Bellefleur was influenced by the work of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Joan Miró. Working as a primary school teacher for twenty-five years, he was an advocate for children’s creativity; and his work with children provided another source of inspiration for his paintings and graphic work. Bellefleur has been called a painter of lyrical abstraction, for there is a strong element of poetry in his work (not only in his titles); he counted the Québécois poets Roland Giguère and Gilles Hénault among his friends, and often illustrated their poems.Retour de la Chimère (Return of the Chimera), illustrates the artist’s approach. Bellefleur explained in 1993 that he would begin a work in a completely free state, without a subject, title, or range of colours in mind (Le Devoir, 23 Fev. 2007). A subject would likely suggest itself to him either during the process or after. He has applied the paint using a palette knife, brush, and spatter technique to achieve a variety of textures and effects. With the palette knife, Bellefleur created a series of flat, overlapping planes of colour with sharp edges, then wrote into the wet paint with the end of a brush. Light appears to emanate from the upper left and lower right corners, with spattered paint suggesting its dispersal over areas of the canvas. The end result is a distinct motif that stands out against a dark ground resembling deep space, and which the artist has interpreted as a chimera—a mythical hybrid beast, composed of parts of more than one animal. The paint handling (dragged with the knife and drawn into while wet) suggests that the creature is in motion—hence, “return.” Typical of Bellefleur’s later works, Retour de la Chimère is filled with light and air, and the central motif stands out clearly. The effect is both magical and mysterious.Estimate: $25,000–30,000
