            Norma Belleza (b. 1939) - Pilipina

            Est: ₱160,000 - ₱208,000

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF MARK WILSON & ELSA DIVINAGRACIA Pilipina signed and dated 1989 (lower right) oil on canvas 29 1/4” x 23” (74 cm x 58 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot. For Norma Belleza, the Filipina is the foremost personification of fortitude amid struggles and adversity. In the work at hand titled Pilipina, Belleza continues with her unspoken declaration of depicting exuberance amid the trials and tribulations of living within the status quo. With her maximalist canvases, Belleza imbues the common Filipina with a strength so palpable that her array of merchandise also becomes a symbol of the Filipino masses’ crucial role in shaping society and history. Norma Belleza (b. 1939) - Magbabangus

            Est: ₱160,000 - ₱208,000

Magbabangus signed and dated 1978 (lower left) oil on wood panel 24" x 24" (61 cm x 61 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot Norma Belleza’s 1978 Magbabangus comes two years after the artist’s triumphant return to art following a decade-long hiatus. Her first solo exhibition was at the Philippine Art Gallery in 1963 before she stopped painting for ten years, only breaking her silence with her 1976 Metro Gallery show. Born in San Fernando, Pampanga with the Pampanga River snaking only a few towns away, Belleza’s provincial background features heavily in her works. Her oeuvre teems with women, vendors, and workers in bright, cheery colors. The river itself is the second-largest river in Luzon and as it narrows down into the lower section of the basin (where the Pampanga delta lies), fishponds populate the area which are often a source of livelihood for the locals. Belleza’s works are often intricate and vibrant, her canvases full of imagery relating to the common folk. But Magbabangus offers a close-up view of the titular vendor, melting away any type of commentaries to provide a sole portrayal of the Filipino masses who endlessly toil for their survival. Depicting a vendor with a basin full of milkfish on their head, her signature folk genre art style elevates and recontextualizes the scene, making her work indelibly Filipino. In this, Belleza puts under the spotlight the common vendors whom we so often interact with but give little thought to, reminding us of their importance and shedding light on the ongoing struggle for genuine equality for every single Filipino despite their social standing. Jun. 08, 2024

            Norma Belleza (b. 1939) - Still Life

            Est: ₱180,000 - ₱234,000

Still Life signed and dated 1984 (lower right) oil on canvas 24" x 30" (61 cm x 76 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Galeria Lienzo Private collection, Manila Norma Belleza’s works embody the quote “The common Filipino is a maximalist.” Overflowing with colors, texture, and Filipino iconography, her works are so vibrant and quintessentially Filipino in their festivities that the best of her oeuvre is her folk genre works depicting women, vendors, workers, and peasants in her strong art style. In her 1984 Still Life, Belleza’s typical broad brush strokes and vivid colors make a return as she depicts a laid-out table. Fresh flowers are put in a jar beside a peeled orange, the flower-patterned curtain and houseplants in the background a clear recall of one’s childhood home. The exuberance of Belleza's works reveals the inherent lush quality of the common folk, the vibrancy showing off her refined folk sensibilities. (Hannah Valiente)

Moreover, they are in a continuous struggle against harsh circumstances borne out of systemic oppression. In this work, the master colorist depicts two women vendors sitting beside their fresh produce of fruits and vegetables. The central figure is the most intriguing in this work; her face is seemingly worn out, and her gesture is aloof. Her mind apparently wanders. Is she thinking of how to survive another day of toiling? Is she reflecting on matters surrounding her fate in this oppressive and exploitative world? As such, Belleza imbues her women figures with innate strength and resilience, represented by their full-bodied figures, compellingly showing that through their capabilities and collective power, women and other oppressed peoples will emancipate themselves toward betterment in all aspects of living. Mother and Child signed and dated 1985 (upper left) oil on canvas 32" x 32" (81 cm x 81 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot The world in Norma Belleza’s paintings is flamboyantly exuberant and highly maximalist. Growing up near a marketplace made Belleza naturally accustomed to the sights, sounds, and experiences of the people struggling for daily survival. Such is the case with this work, which features a mother serenely watching over her sleeping son. Fresh produce, such as vegetables, fruits, and fish, surround them, clearly expressing a marketplace setting. It can be seen that the mother juggles between providing for their daily sustenance while maintaining an intimate connection with her son, i.e., making sure that he is well taken care of. Belleza’s maximalist approach to painting the common folk and their everyday activities in their locales implies the artist’s profound understanding of their struggles for survival and sustenance. In particular, her depiction of people, especially women, as able-bodied, with their facial expressions connoting the strains of labor under an unsympathetic and inhumane system, manifest the seemingly endless contradiction between struggling, surviving, and ultimately achieving genuine societal change. By masterfully combining the vividness of the colors of her composition, the tightly knit connection of her subjects, and their corporal vigorousness, Belleza reinforces the idea that the people are their own messiah. Hailing from San Fernando, Pampanga, Belleza grew up in a house situated near the town’s marketplace. In a 1987 interview by Cid Reyes and published in his landmark book titled Conversations on Philippine Art (1989), the esteemed art critic asks the artist: “How about you, Ate Norma, regarding your subject matter….” Belleza answers: “I was a frequenter of the market. Whenever I was there, I would catch sight NORMA BELLEZA A Master Colorist’s Enduring Homage to the Marketplace and carefully observe the goods sold by market vendors, such as vegetables and fish.” These works showcase the enduring influence of the marketplace (and the downtown in general) in Belleza’s artistry— from still lifes depicting a wide array of harvests, vendors, ordinary families, and even musicians and the common folk engaging in recreation and amusement. These settings, stamped onto Belleza’s memory since time immemorial, engender an oeuvre ever exuberant in its quality and essence. (A.M.)

Prior to that landmark event in her life, Belleza was a fresh graduate and an emergent artist, having just received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1962. She would also bag awards at the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual, where she was named third honorable mention in 1962 and awarded third prize in 1963. The work at hand, simply titled Portrait, was among the works featured in Belleza’s career-defining exhibition. Back in its heyday, the Philippine Art Gallery (PAG) was the benchmark for Philippine modernism, where the best of the country’s modern art was showcased and accorded deserved recognition. Writes Purita Kalaw-Ledesma in the book The Biggest Little Room, the PAG “was a good venue for the struggling young Modern artist.” Exhibiting at the PAG was a badge of honor for the budding artist, such as Norma Belleza in her youth. Portrait is also a quintessential representation of Belleza’s early style. There was this phase in Belleza’s career wherein her paintings did not resemble the brightly colored and highly exuberant themes that would catapult her to prominence. Depressing and somber themes characterized Belleza’s paintings during her early phase, often depicting religious subjects and, sometimes, those that implicitly speak of the anguish experienced by the human soul. In Portrait, Belleza depicts a solitary man, with his face explicitly expressing personal torment. Belleza’s spontaneous brushstrokes and impassioned employment of somber colors exude an intense brand of expressionism. A heightened charge of emotions is palpably discerned, a quality that only comes from an artist so natural in her ability to capture the many facets of human existence. Even in her early phase, Belleza’s signature distortion of her figures is already apparent. (A.M.)

Clowns have long epitomized the art of comedy. In the Philippines, the payaso is one of the main protagonists of the traditional perya (circus) and various other celebrations, foremost of which are children’s birthday parties. Many of us grew up watching clowns throw humorous punchlines and perform magic tricks that surely bewildered us as innocent children. But in several cases, behind their cheerful façades lie the suppressed feelings of demoralization and hopelessness (sad clown paradox), which Belleza hints at in these works by depicting ambivalence and contrast in the clowns’ facial expressions and her employment of vivid colors. Beyond the nostalgic happiness for our precious childhood memories that the image of the clown enkindles is establishing sensitivity and finding empathy with the people who once put joy in our childhood hearts. Growing up, Belleza lived in a house situated near the town market, thus familiarizing herself with its vibrant everyday affairs. In a 1987 interview by Cid Reyes and published in his landmark book titled Conversations on Philippine Art (1989), the esteemed art critic asks the artist: “How about you, Ate Norma, regarding your subject matter….” Belleza answers: “I was a frequenter of the market. Whenever I was there, I would catch sight and carefully observe the goods sold by market vendors, such as vegetables and fish.” The vibrancy of a marketplace would eventually go on to influence the inherent exuberance of Belleza’s compositions. Her honest depictions of the folk people, who are seen situated in cramped spaces and whose faces connote anguish, exude vulnerability, yet at the same time, fortitude and strength. The vibrant palette represents courage in adversity; the masses are their own light toward liberation. The palpability of Belleza’s works invokes empathy for the viewer’s part, making them feel and partake in the struggles and innate strength of the people in the face of all tribulations. (A.M.)
