Despite its simplicity, her featured painting magnifies themes of competition, entertainment, community, and excitement. All while letting her iconic expressive art style shine through her compositions. Known for portraying Filipino daily life using simplified figures and vibrant colors, Belleza dominated the scene with shades of red to showcase the passionate, exciting, and violent atmosphere that lingers around such a pastime. Portraying a crowded scene that blends both human figures and the roosters that are in the central image, Belleza immediately emphasizes how the scene has almost no empty space. Every inch is filled with faces, limbs, hats, and clothing that immediately delivers the crowdedness and loudness of such a venue just by looking at it. The clashing roosters seem to amplify the loud rhythm of the piece, as the animal itself suggests wakefulness, noise, and, more fittingly, competition—one that complements the crowded atmosphere of the piece. This effectively revealed the communal spirit of the scene while showcasing Belleza’s signature art style and lively compositions. Bearing her curious childlike aesthetic of harsh strokes and bright palette, Belleza depicts a lady vendor managing her tindahan of meriendas—a sort of snack bar. On the table are an assortment of snacks, a container of ice-filled samalamig, and jars of what appear to be halo-halo ingredients, a favorite treat to battle the Philippine heat. This common scene in the barrios during the afternoon hours reflects our culture: taking a break, resting, and having a merienda, as part of a group or in solitude. Under the shade of a makeshift tent and lush trees, the vendor sits waiting for her customers to arrive, fanning herself with a pamaypay—another distinct Filipino identity. While this 1974 work embodies the elements of a quintessential Belleza piece—woman as the main actor and a colorful palette—what she portrays is rather grim compared to her usual outings. The term ‘Herbolario (or ‘albularyo’) stems from the Spanish word herbolario, a herbalist. In the Philippine context, it refers to folk healers who blend pre-colonial rituals, herbs and medicinal plants, and syncretic Catholic prayers to cure an ailment—supernatural or not. People turn to these healers to treat an incurable disease that science and medicine could not explain. Most of the time, they use herbal medicine and invocation to alleviate an illness. Other times, especially in ancient times, they were called to dispel evil spirits, inflicting pain on an individual. (Jessica Magno)

An artist from the second generation of Neo-Realists, alongside her contemporaries including Malang, Mario Parial, and Angelito Antonio, Belleza’s works are a vivid explosion of vibrant colors and intricate details, her fascination with the folk genre translating into scenes of the pastoral Philippines. This particular Belleza work echoes that horror vacui that permeates many of her pieces. Depicting a family of four, Belleza’s iconic figures sit in front of what could have been their flower shop. Husband and wife sit upon a bench, with the father holding his prized rooster and the mother holding her youngest on her lap. Behind them, their eldest son is playing with his toy. Flowers surround the family, no square inch of canvas unused. Belleza’s vivid colors shine through in this work. The primary colors red, blue, and yellow dominate the canvas, with daubs of pink and green serving as secondary colors. However, rather than muddy the work, this explosion of colors perfectly embodies the crowded and noisy market scene. The Filipino people as a whole are rather maximalist in their lifestyle, and this maximalism is the central tenet of Belleza’s works. Born in San Fernando, Pampanga, her provincial upbringing shines in many of her works. The Pampanga River snaked its way between the region, only a few towns away from hers, and in its proximity popped a vibrant town full of vendors, workers, and small families, all of which found their place in Belleza’s canvases. “I was a frequenter of the market,” she said in a 1987 interview with Cid Reyes. “Whenever I was there, I would catch sight and carefully observe the goods sold by market vendors, such as vegetables and fish.” This particular work portrays Belleza’s maximalist Filipino market scenes. Under her colorful vision, Belleza depicts a quiet rural scene featuring a mother and her child. Here, Belleza transforms that vivacious and native atmosphere, putting the common vendors whom we often interact with but give little thought to under the spotlight. (Hannah Andrea Valiente)

These flowers are characterized by their tall, elegant stems adorned with colorful trumpet-shaped blooms and are often associated with strength, victory, pride, sincerity, and moral integrity. She is celebrated for her kaleidoscopic folk genre paintings, a stark contrast to her earlier dark and gloomy themes. Belleza usually populated her images with women vendors, potters, and workers, with emphasis on their physical strength and native appearances. In Tabok, the traditional nipa hut takes center stage, instead of the populace. The bahay kubo is nestled amidst lush mango trees, bathed in the vibrant provincial light, enlivening her scenery. Despite Belleza's brilliant palette and black outlines, reminiscent of a child's handiwork, her works are not overwhelming. Unlike her popular works, this featured piece depicts a group of children playing hide and seek, with the seeker covering their eyes while the rest are hiding all around the paintingsome leaning behind a wall while others hiding themselves inside empty crates. What differentiates this piece from her later paintings is her use of dark and gloomy color schemes, indicating that the piece was created by Belleza during the earlier phases of her painting career. The expressions of the children hiding, some who are concerned holding hands as a sign of comfort, one bowing their head, while the others were covering their mouths, imply an aura of intensity and seeking quiet comfort through silence, hinting that the game of “hide and seek” as illustrated in this piece is far more than an innocent children’s game. The Pampanga River snaked its way between the region only a few towns away from hers, and in its proximity popped a vibrant town full of vendors, workers, and small families, all of which found their place in Belleza’s canvases.   “I was a frequenter of the market,” she said in a 1987 interview with Cid Reyes. “Whenever I was there, I would catch sight and carefully observe the goods sold by market vendors, such as vegetables and fish.”   As such, it might not be a stretch to say Belleza happened upon a peculiar sight on the streets of the Philippines as she may have replicated in Gold Fish Vendor. Like the titular seller, Belleza’s vendor has several plastic bags half-full with water and containing a singular goldfish each. Here, Belleza transforms that vivacious and native atmosphere with her distinctive short brush strokes and compelling color scheme. In this, Belleza puts under the spotlight the common vendors whom we so often interact with but give little thought to; at the same time, she elevates the Filipino as she uses a unique scene that could only be seen in the Philippines. Born in San Fernando, Pampanga, Belleza grew up in a house near the town market where characters from all walks of time congregated. She became familiarized with the town’s local affairs, its vibrant life speaking to her.   In her Women Playing Cards, the viewer is greeted with the quintessential Belleza style with a twist; a group of six women sit on the round table, each holding a deck of cards in her hand. The background is just as vibrant, as one observes a santo seated in the back and the children sleeping. Most interesting of all is the crisscross of wooden panels preventing us from fully seeing the scene. It is as if we are on the outside looking in, a watcher peering in on a private moment.   During Belleza’s early years, her works took on a dark and gloomy atmosphere. However, she eventually became more popularly known for her folk genre pieces like Women Playing Cards. Here, she evokes the vibrancy of rural life, highlighting the appearance of her people who were more “unsophisticated” than those of her contemporaries. Still, her bulky men and women echo the humble and simple life of her people, creating a piece that feels close to the hearts of her viewers.
