    Belling, Rudolf: Beethoven Monument

    Est: €600 - €900

Photographer: Franz Linkhorst (active in Berlin, 1920s/30s). Model of Beethoven Monument, design by Rudolf Belling. 1926. Vintage gelatin silver print. 17 x 23 cm. Photographer's stamp and annotated in pencil on the verso. In April 1926 the Berlin municipal authorities organized a contest for the design of a Beethoven monument at Bülowplatz to be placed in front of the Volksbühne theater. The following artists were invited to participate: Rudolf Belling, Marcel Breuer, Georg Kolbe, Hugo Lederer, Karl Ludwig Manzel, Otto Placzek and Edwin Scharff. With this artistic monument, the city of Berlin wanted to commemorate the 100th anniversary (1927) of this important German composer’s death. Fritz Stahl of the Berliner Tageblatt praised Belling’s design as "high quality", however, apparently none of the designs were carried out. – In very good condition. Exhibited: Philharmonie de Paris (exhibition space). Oct. 14–Jan. 29, 2017. “LUDWIG VAN – Le Mythe Beethoven”. May. 09, 2019

§ Rudolf Belling, (German, 1886-1972), Cubist Composition, bronze,

    Est: £2,000 - £4,000

§ Rudolf Belling, (German, 1886-1972), Cubist Composition, bronze, signed in the bronze and dated 1950, Noack, Berlin foundry stamp h:50 cm Other Notes: One of the most eminent German sculptors of classical modernism and a pioneer of sculptural abstraction, Rudolf Belling originally started out as a stage and costume designer. He produced sculptures and props for the theatre and films, notably receiving commissions from Max Reinhardt (1873-1943). A prolific and eclectic artist, Belling did not limit his work to sculpture alone, working also as scenographer, designer and architectural sculptor. Belling was much influenced by Expressionism, particularly by the painter and architect Hans Poelzig (1869-1936), however, he had the talent to move between styles. His artistic development was shaped by a variety of styles including futurism, constructivism, abstraction and naturalism. In 1919, he produced the first non-figurative abstract sculpture in the German-speaking world - 'Dreiklang' (Triad) - an iconic and pioneering example of abstract sculpture in Germany. Against the predominant theories of his time, put forward by the German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand (1847-1921), Belling conceived his sculptures in space, adopting the so-called 'Belling System'. The present sculpture, which can be viewed from different perspectives, is an example of this then revolutionary approach to sculpture, as it encourages the observer to circle around it. One of the founding members of the artists' association, 'Novembergruppe', in Berlin, his political views did not conform with the Nazi ideology. Shortly after being elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1931, he was forced to resign and he was banned from working in Germany, with his works being labelled as 'degenerate'. Unable to stay in his home country, Belling emigrated to Istanbul, where he lived for thirty years before being allowed to return to Germany at the age of 80. In the year before he died, Belling created the bronze sculpture, 'Blütenmotiv als Friedenssymbol' (Flower Motif as a Peace Symbol), which became the international landmark of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

Rudolf Belling, Entwurf für eine Plastik, Lithograph, 1968

    Est: €100 - €130

Lithograph on wove paper ‘BFK Rives’ (watermark) Germany, 1968 Rudolf Belling (1886-1972) – German sculptor Signed, dated and inscribed (numbering in the images deviates from the actual numbering of the lot) Artist’s proof aside from the edition of 100 Published by Edition Ketterer, Munich (with their blindstamp) Ketterer edition directory 20 Image dimensions: 54.3 x 41.6 cm; sheet dimensions: 64.5 x 49.8 cm Good condition Condition: The lithograph bears a short tear (1cm) in the left sheet edge and occasional soft creases. There is a pencil inscription by another hand in the lower right corner. Otherwise the condition is good. The image measures 54.3 x 41.6 cm, the sheet 64.5 x 49.8 cm. Rudolf Belling (1886-1972) The Berlin-born sculptor Rudolf Belling, who formed part of the international avant garde of sculptors between the world wars, was initially known as a protagonist of expressionism. After his education as modeler and designer Bellinger created the stage design for Max Reinhardt. Later he worked as a sculptor in Berlin. At the end of the 1930s the artist went to Turkey, where he was a teacher at the academy for sculpture in Istanbul. Around 1966 he returned to Germany. The National Socialists defamed his work as "degenerate" in 1937 and confiscated his artwork which was on display in public museums. Stylistically there was a break affecting his oeuvre: While his works of the 1910er and 1920er were characterized as expressionist, it changed when Belling faced up to futurism and Russian constructivism. Works of the former pioneer of sculpting are in the collections of national and international museums such as Berliner Nationalgalerie, Berlinische Galerie, Museum Folkwang in Essen as well as in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Works of the former pioneer of sculpting are in the collections of national and international museums such as Berliner Nationalgalerie, Berlinische Galerie, Museum Folkwang in Essen as well as in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. "Fred Antoine Angermayer" Feder und Bleistift auf Velin. 1922. 13 x 10,5 cm. Jahr 1921, S. 10). Frühe Zeichnungen von Belling finden sich extrem selten im Kunsthandel. - Provenienz: Erich Hermann Müller von Asow Privatbesitz Dresden

RUDOLF BELLING (BERLÍN, 1886-1972) Busto de Wilhelm II (Guillermo II). Elaborado en bronce patinado en color negro. Sobre base de marmol negro veteado. Firmado.
