Alongside her work as a painter, she worked as an illustrator for Harper's Bazaar and Shell and produced illustrations for Alison Uttley's The Candlelight Tales (1936), demonstrating the breadth of her artistic practice. Throughout her career, she remained committed to representational painting at a time when abstraction was becoming increasingly influential. This commitment is particularly evident in Girl with Red Hair and Two Children, where three figures stand against a sparse winter landscape rendered in pale blues, greys, and muted greens. Although the children are grouped together, there is little sense of interaction between them; each appears withdrawn, absorbed in a private world. The painting's subdued palette and softly rendered forms create an atmosphere of quiet unease, while the bare branches and reflective water reinforce a feeling of stillness and isolation. Rather than telling a story, Bellingham Smith uses colour, composition, and expression to evoke an emotional state, inviting the viewer to contemplate the inner lives of her subjects.
