Painter, b. 1426 - d. 1516

(b 1426; d 1516) Giovanni Bellini and his older brother Gentile are considered the founders of the Venetian school of painting, though Giovanni became the better known artist. He was influenced by the Paduan school and fellow artist Mantegna and Antonello da Messina. One of the first Italian artists to master the techniques of oil painting used by the Flemish, Giovanni’s landscapes became softer, brighter and more expressive. After establishing a large workshop, Giovanni took on commissions for altarpieces, Madonnas and portraits, including an important portrait of Doge Leonardo Loredan of Venice. He became a very influential teacher and his pupils included other great Venetian artists such as Titian and Giorgione.

In particolare con la figura di Santa Caterina, che in entrambe le opere sia nella sua postura sia nell'espressione del viso sembra essere frutto della stessa mano. Nel Museo patavino il dipinto è assegnato a Francesco di Bernardo De' Vecchi detto Francesco Rizzo Da Santacroce, anche se precedentemente fu ricondotto, sempre in ambito belliniano, prima a Vincenzo Catena e in seguito a Vincenzo Dalle Destre. In particular with the figure of St. Catherine, who in both works both in her posture and in her facial expression seems to be the fruit of the same hand. In the paduan Museum the painting is assigned to Francesco di Bernardo De' Vecchi called Francesco Rizzo Da Santacroce, although it was previously attributed, again within Bellini's workshop, first to Vincenzo Catena and later to Vincenzo Dalle Destre.

MADONNA MIT DEM KIND Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 55,5 x 44,5 cm. Goldrahmen im Frührenaissancestil. Einige wesentliche Bildmotive bringen das Gemälde in die Nähe eines Werkes von Bellini, das sich seit 1908 im Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York befindet. Hier wie dort ist die Madonna im Halbbildnis mit dem Kind vor einem roten Tuch gezeigt, das links einen Blick in die Landschaft freigibt. In Bellinis Epoche hat ein solches Vorhangtuch bereits die bis dahin noch übliche Thronrückwand ersetzt. Auch in vorliegendem Gemälde ist die Darstellung am Unterrand durch eine kurze Brüstung abgeschlossen, hierauf liegt die linke Hand der Maria mit einem kleinen Buch, einem Gebetbuch auf. Kopf und Brust mit einem weißen Tuch bedeckt, darüber ein grünes Manteltuch, wobei das Rot des Kleides freigelassen bleibt. Der gesenkte Blick Mariens ist auf das Kind gerichtet, das jedoch Blickkontakt mit dem Bildbetrachter aufnimmt. Im Gegensatz zum New Yorker Bild, das im Hintergrund eine Häusergruppe zeigt, wird hier ein Fensterausblick über eine Flusslandschaft geboten, mit kompaktem Wolkengebilde auf blauem Himmelsgrund. Die Nimben nur sehr zart angedeutet, in Form feiner, kaum wahrnehmbarer Linien, wobei im Nimbus des Kindes die Kreuzform einbezeichnet ist. Diese feinen Linien der Nimben entsprechen auch der Malweise im genannten Beispiel des Metropolitan-Museums. Der Unterschied der beiden Bilder ist auch darin zu sehen, dass der Maler des uns vorliegenden Bildes auf die damals sehr kostspielige Verwendung von aus Lapislazuli hergestellter Blaufarbe verzichten musste, was stattdessen die Verwendung von Grün im Mantel erklärt. Il maestro veneziano affrontò il tema della Vergine e della pera, simbolo di bontà e ricchezza della fede, in Madonna col Bambino (detta anche Madonna di Alzano), Madonna della Pera o Madonna Morelli. Particolare è la figura del bambino, probabilmente modello già usato da Bellini in molte sue opere, tra cui Madonna con Gesù Bambino santi e donatore del Museo Kunst Palast di Dusseldorf. Il bambino possiede inoltre una particolarità per la cultura del Rinascimento, ovvero nasconde la sua nudità, fatto raro e probabilmente nato da un preciso desiderio della committenza. Questo dettaglio originale è condiviso con altre opere di Bellini, come la Sacra Conversazione conservata presso il Walters Art Museum di Baltimora. Detto anche il Giambellino, Giovanni Bellini è annoverato tra i più celebri artisti del Rinascimento e della Storia dell’arte. Lavorò per ben sessant'anni, producendo una serie copiosissima di capolavori, oggi talvolta ancora presenti nelle Chiese venete o nei più importanti musei del mondo. The Venetian master addressed the theme of the Virgin and the pear, symbol of goodness and richness of faith, in the Madonna and Child (also known as Madonna di Alzano), Madonna della Pera or Madonna Morelli. Particular is the figure of the child, probably a model already used by Bellini in many of his artworks, including the Madonna with the Holy Child and donor of the Kunst Palast Museum in Dusseldorf. The child also has a particularity for the culture of the Renaissance, that is, it hides its nudity, a rare fact and probably born from a specific desire of the client. This original detail is shared with other artworks by Bellini, such as the Sacred Conversation preserved at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

Interessante notare come l’anonimo maestro ne dia una versione “allargata”, che include l’intero busto di Gesù. Va considerato che l’opera è, con buona probabilità, nella sua patina originale. Detto anche il Giambellino, Giovanni Bellini è annoverato tra i più celebri artisti del Rinascimento e della Storia dell’arte. Lavorò per ben sessant'anni, producendo una serie copiosissima di capolavori, oggi talvolta ancora presenti nelle Chiese veneziane e venete o nei più importanti musei del mondo. Fu il vero e proprio iniziatore della pittura rinascimentale veneziana, traghettandola dai vecchi modi tardo gotici persistenti in città. Italian school, Circle of GIOVANNI BELLINI (Venice, 1431/ 1436-1516); circa 1516. "The Holy Family. Gouache on vellum. Dated in the lower central area. Size: 17 x 13,5 cm; 29 x 24 cm (frame). In this canvas we see a devotional work of great beauty and emotion, classical in its conception, although enriched by a warm illumination, which drinks from the aesthetic influence of the artist Giovanni Bellini. The artist presents us with a well-established and balanced composition, clearly classical, based on a pyramidal scheme with Mary's head at the top. The figures stand out against a neutral background that seems to open up to the blue sky at the sides, which to a certain extent emphasises the corporeality of all the figures in the scene. All the figures are also vividly illuminated by a direct, uniform light. Mary is depicted half-length, wearing a pink tunic and a blue cloak, a colour alluding to the concepts of truth and eternity that would be common in Marian representations. With one of her arms, the Virgin is holding her son, who is standing and offering her a small bouquet of flowers, but with her other hand she is holding tightly that of Saint John Child, which shows the Virgin as the protector of children. Next to them in the background are two men, one of whom, holding a staff, seems to represent Saint Joseph, while the other, wearing a turban, is probably Saint Joachim, the Virgin's father. From its aesthetic characteristics the work can be related to the artistic circle of Giovanni Bellini, an Italian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family. He grew up in the house of Jacopo Bellini, who was previously thought to be his father, although this generational family relationship is now questioned. Giovanni Bellini was considered to have revolutionised Venetian painting, moving it towards a more sensual and colourful style. Using light, slow-drying oil paints, Giovanni created rich, deep tints and detailed shadows. His sumptuous colouring and fluid, atmospheric landscapes had a great effect on the Venetian school of painting, especially on his pupils Giorgione and Titian.
