George Wesley Bellows Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, Lithographer, b. 1882 - d. 1925

(b Columbus, Ohio 1882; d 1962) Bellows attended Ohio State University before moving to New York to study under Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. A follower of the Ashcan school, he is labeled an urban realist. He selected his subject matter primarily from New York’s lower classes, painting tenement children, street brawls, ghettos and illegal prizefights. His talent allowed him to also paint high society though, and he produced many scenes of beautiful people, dressed in their finest, playing tennis, watching polo, etc. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1913, the same year his work was part of the avant-garde Armory show. Later in his career, he took up lithography and became a prolific print-maker.

George Wesley Bellows: Paintings, Drawings and Prints, an exhibition catalogue, Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, 1979, p. 65, no. 54 (illustrated). Lot Essay In the twilight of his career, Bellows underwent a noticeable evolution in style and subject matter, transitioning from dynamic representations of urban life and sporting events to an exploration of the landscape. The present work depicts Woodstock, New York, where Bellows spent part of every year from 1920-1924. According to art historian, Bruce Weber, Woodstock offered Bellows the perfect complement of “nature and neighborhood.” The town's bucolic charm and supportive community fostered a fusion of Impressionist brushwork and an ambitious approach to color and light, showcasing the artist's versatility. The Woodstock landscapes reveal Bellows’ ability to translate the atmospheric nuances of the countryside onto canvas, all the while employing a higher-key palette to capture the interplay of light and shadow on architecture and environment. Landscape, Old Lady's Home, one of over 100 paintings Bellows created during this prolific four-year span, is indicative of a softer, more contemplative facet of his career.

                Est: $4,000 - $6,000

GEORGE BELLOWS The Street. Lithograph, 1917. 485x387 mm; 19x15 1/4 inches, full margins. Edition of 54. Signed, titled and inscribed "No. 35" in pencil, lower margin. A superb, well-inked impression with all the tonal variations distinct. According to Bellows, the scene is, "Under the elevated, lower east side in mid-summer." Bellows' idea for this lithograph dates back to preliminary drawings executed in 1913-14. One, entitled I Was Beatin' 'is Face, crayon, ink and pencil, 1913, now in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, shows a much grittier, slum-like city view, which has been idealized in the lithograph, with a policeman restraining a young street urchin. Another drawing, Pinched (I Was Punchin' His Face), crayon, ink and pencil, 1914, now in the Wiggins Collection, Boston Public Library, focuses on the two glamorous women in the foreground, much like in the lithograph. In both drawings, the policeman restraining the street urchin at the center is replaced by a woman scolding the boy in the lithograph version of the scene. Mason 47.
