    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Goncharov, 1935 oil on canvas 80 x 101 cm (31 x 40 in.) inscribed, signed and dated lower left LOT NOTES Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky was a Russian genre painter, known for his many Realist portraits and landscape studies. He studied painting over the course of a decade, first at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, followed by the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He spent a few years in the late 1890s studying and working in private studios in Paris, before settling in Riga, Latvia in 1921. There, his focus transitioned from portraiture to painting rural landscapes and peasant children studying in the classroom. This portrait of a gentleman, inscribed by the artist A. T. Goncharov, was painted towards the end of the artist`s career. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Please contact us via email: [email protected] or call us at +1 (212) 717-7500 before or after the auction for a shipping quote for this item.

The work will be included in the forthcoming monograph on Bogdanov-Belsky being prepared by A. Kouznetsoff. Nikolai Bogdanov-Belsky is above all famous for his genre scenes. His works are without doubt among the best examples of Russian genre painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Having settled in Latvia, Bogdanov-Belsky continued to paint genre scenes, while regularly executing wonderful landscapes of the countryside and towns. Towards the end of the 1910s, Bogdanov-Belsky's style changed significantly. His almost academic realism, which he had taken from the Itinerants of the late period, disappeared. He became seriously interested in Post-Impressionism, his colour scheme became more open and vibrant, and his brushstrokes more elongated and abrupt. From now onwards, his paintings were full of sunlight and free from dark umber tones.

    Est: £250,000 - £300,000

BOGDANOV-BELSKY, NIKOLAI 1868-1945 The Teacher's Guests , signed. Oil on canvas, 80.5 by 102 cm. Provenance: Private collection, UK. The work will be included in the book on N. Bogdanov-Belsky being prepared by A. Kouznetsoff. The Teacher's Guests by Nikolai Bogdanov-Belsky is the artist's reworking of his celebrated work The Teacher's Name Day . Executed with impeccable skill, it presents a significant departure from his earlier works painted at the turn of the century and bears witness to the creative strides made during his later period. The idea of a work on the theme of village children invited to tea with their teacher was first conceived of by Bogdanov-Belsky in 1908, when visiting the estate of a landowner named Ushakov, in Tver Province. There he executed a sketch entitled Visiting the Teacher from which, two years later, he painted the large-scale work that brought him celebrity in Europe. Sadly, it has been lost and is known only from reproductions. The artist, however, carefully preserved the sketch itself and used it as the basis for several variations which would have been well-known by his contemporaries, including The Teacher's Name Day , The Teacher's Birthday and Visiting the Teacher . When Bogdanov-Belsky left Soviet Russia for Latvia in 1924 he took the sketch with him, and it is today preserved in the Art Museum in Riga. As an émigré he again turned to the theme of children having tea in a garden, always composed from fresh sketches drawn from life and never forfeiting the principles of Impressionism, which for him were still relevant. Thus his protagonists change from picture to picture and this large work, The Teacher's Guests , is a splendid demonstration of this. Painted while the artist was living in Latvia, this work continues to focus on the theme of a happy village childhood, which allowed him to address the creative problems of light and colour that interested him. By arranging his figures within their landscape and using lively, vivid, vibrant colours, the artist fills the picture with the fleeting movement of foliage trembling in the wind and with the sense of a glimpse of real life. The composition is imbued with the desire to convey artistically the link between man and nature and to suffuse the canvas with light and air. It was most likely local youngsters who posed for this picture, alongside the artist's young wife, who often modelled for Bogdanov-Belsky's portraits and genre works. Incidentally, many of the teacher's guests can also be seen in his other works of the time. We can, for example, recognise the little girl in the flowered headscarf and striped top, drinking tea from a saucer, as the protagonist in the romanticised work Inspiration , and the two urchins sitting at the end of the table nearest to us as the young visitors to an artist's studio in the painting Guests .
