Influenced by the art of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, artist Frank Moss Bennett was famous for his attention to historical accuracy in his oil paintings. Bennett began his training in 1892 at Slade School of Art in London and finished his education at the Royal Academy of Arts. Ladas the Greek runner falling dead as he goes to receive his crown of olives at Olympia, a lithograph he created in 1899, won him a gold medal from the Royal Academy. Bennett 1944 Framed in a Gilt Gold Frame measuring H 29 x W 41 x D 2.5 inches Condition: Good, some wear to frame Frank Moss Bennett was a British painter best known for his portraits of soldiers killed in World War I, usually commissioned by their grieving relatives. Deeply committed to portraying scrupulously accurate historical scenes, one of his most famous and frequently reproduced works is The Landlord's Story, an illustration depicting men gathered around a fireplace. He was born on November 15, 1874 in Liverpool, England and in 1892 began his studies at London's Slade School of Art where he was taught by Henry Tonks, Philip Wilson Steer, and John Singer Sargent. He continued his education at St. John's Wood Art School and then the Royal Academy of Arts in London, going on to a commercially successful career as an artist and illustrator. From 1898 to 1928, his works were shown at the Royal Academy, and from 1899 to 1932 at the Liverpool Art Gallery. He died on February 23, 1952 in Devon, England—his paintings continue to be widely reproduced to this day.

CONDITION: Good, restored condition, from the estate of Museum benefactor, Mary H. Hodges. Bennett studied at The Slade School of Art, the St. Johns Wood School of Art to further his studies and the Royal Academy School of Art. Originally, he specialized in portrait painting. He then extended his works to genre paintings (many set in the Elizabethan period), these were to be the works that he is most remembered for, both commercially and privately. His watercolor paintings were also much sought after and he gave several exhibitions of them throughout England. From 1912 forward he also exhibited at The Paris Salon.

    Frank Moss Bennett,  British 1874-1952-  Outside the Old Britannia;  oil on canvas, signed, inscribed, and dated 'F M Bennett Sketch 1937' (lower left), 38 x 51 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present work is a preparatory study for a finished painting by Bennett, of similar dimensions, which sold at Sotheby's Billingshurst, 1 February 1994 (£7,000). The final painting diverges in composition only slightly from this original sketch, with Bennett altering the details of the clothing of the sitter second from the left. The composition is characteristic of Bennett's oeuvre, which consists largely of genre scenes depicting figures in historical dress, often seated and engaged in leisurely or familial pursuits.
