(76.2 x 101.6cm.) * Provenance: Purchased from the Omell Galleries, London 8th September 1978, together with another painting by the same artist of the same dimensions titled "Action between Lively and Tonterelle 13th March 1785" ** Notes: HMS Belvidera was a 36-gun Royal Navy frigate built in Deptford in 1809. She saw action in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 and continued a busy career at sea into the middle of the 19th century. On 23rd June 1812, oblivious to the fact that five days earlier the United States had declared war on Britain, she was chased by three American frigates, USS President, USS United States and USS Congress but managed to escape. Born in Yorkshire in 1927, John Bentham-Dinsdale was best known for painting the sea and in particular the great clipper and fighting ships of times gone by. His ships were meticulously researched. He turned to painting late in life after qualifying as an architect and serving as a commissioned office and pilot in the Royal Air Force. He worked as a theatre designer and in television until 1965 when he decided to devote himself to marine painting full time. He exhibited in Europe, Australia, Canada, the United States and the Far East. He died in 2008.
