Painter, Illustrator, b. 1889 - d. 1975

Artist Thomas Hart Benton was one of the leaders of the American Regionalism art movement. He, Grant Wood, and John Curry changed how people viewed art subjects. These artists painted everyday people representing the American way of life. Artist Thomas Hart Benton's The Sources of Country Music is one of his most recognized murals. Other memorable works are America Today, Indiana Murals, and Persephone.

Benton attended the Art Institute of Chicago and studied in Paris. Thomas Hart Benton's prints illustrate American life in the West and South. His subjects were often farm workers, factory employees, and home-and-hearth scenes. Many consider him the leader of the American Regionalism Movement. My grandfather "Pappy" Wise had a cotton farm a few miles, 5 or 6, out of Waxahachie, Texas and one night when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old a great light appeared in the sky. It was so great that speculation about the end of the world was bruited about among the grown folks at the farm. As it turned out a straw stack had caught fire on an adjoining farm and some small tool sheds and part of a fence was burned. We all visited the place next morning and heard tell of how the farmer and his sons had got the scared horses out of the barn. Not a ‘true’ folk song but one of the ‘synthetics’ of the time based on an old folk tune. Drawing made in winter of 1926-27 - painting of this subject was purchased by Sears Roebuck Co. and a print of it was circulated by the firm during the 40s and early 50s. Don’t know where the painting is now.”   The artist added further context in AAA's patron supplement No. 27: "Everybody knows the song. It has been popular from one end of the country to the other. Cowboys sing it, people who live in the southern Applachians sing it, as well as those who live in the Ozarks, and out on the prairie farms. It has even found its way to the fishing coasts of New England. 'Goin down the grade at ninety miles an hour,' old '97 hit a broken rail and hell busted loose. This picture shows the moment just before the bust. The song doesn't say who saw the affair, but somebody must have, and it could just as well have been people like those in the wagon. The sheet measures 12" x 16".   Of The Music Lesson, Benton commented: "Litho made as study for a large, nearly life size painting which was executed on Martha's Vineyard in the middle '40s. The characters Gale Huntington, Vineyard folk singer, and his daughter. Painting in the Koch collection, Wichita, Kansas."   AAA's Patron's Supplement No. 26 adds: "In addition to farming, carpentry, fishing, and the thousand and one odd jobs which everybody does who lives in Chilmark, Gale [Huntington] plays the guitar and sings the songs of the whalers and old-time fishermen of the island. Emily also sings them. She is learning the piano as well but under protest. She'd rather sing with Gale. Trees, white oak, grow thick at the trunk but do not get very high on our part of the island because of the winds. Painting in my possession. This picture shows him telling about the Bible. Twice yearly, spring and autumn, I have floated these rivers for many years, fishing, camping out on the sandbars and just watching the river banks go by. The boy in the picture is my son T.P.
